Great message. We shouldn't expect perfectly-balanced lives in the short term. Life and work throw unexpected curves, and if you're expecting a perfect balance, you will be disappointed.

I bought one for my daughter in law. She has gone back to work after being a stay at home mom of three kids.She mentioned to me that she was trying to find a balance in her life.I saw the book on amazon and decided to send it to her. I figured she would like as Matthew Kelly is one of our favorite authors.Then I thought "why not read it myself so we could share our thoughts".Wow, it was a great mind blower. I'm retired and thought it would not apply to me, wrong, I've gotten so much from it.It is well worth reading. It seemed to start slow but then it really took off.

This book really made me think. The discussions about managing my energy was my favorite part of the book. A great read for anyone feeling off balance.

I listened to this and really like Matthew Kelly. Very interesting book and different ways of looking at things that really impacted me and my daily life. I really enjoyed listening to the Audio Book and for sure recommend it. Especially if you have dreams that you want to reach regardless of what the peanut gallery is saying.

Originally got this from the library, went out and bought my own. His premise of replacing "balance" with "satisfaction" resonates with me because it is not about time, it is about satisfaction.

Had to read this for a statistics class. Super repetitive, could have wrote this book in about 3 pages, but whatever.

Worth the read.

We can and should be off balance at times based on what is going on in our lives, and it's ok as long as priorities and communication are clear. If you have small kids at home you have to give them first priority and your work may suffer. You may sacrifice by working and going to school for awhile to make a better future for your family. You may have major projects at work that require more time and travel. The key is keeping you priorities straight and rebalancing as you go and not be permanently off-balance, either with work or family..

In Delivering Alpha, Hilda Ochoa-Brillembourg shares her experiences managing financial assets for several institutional and private clients over a three decade-long career. Structured as a series of topical discussions, the book attempts to answer the question: How should a money management operation be designed and run so as to generate superior investment returns? Ochoa-Brillembourg seems to be well qualified for this task, having produced an enviable level of long-term outperformance in her own company. Indeed, many of her insights involving topics such as asset allocation strategy, trading alternative assets, and firm governance principles are very illuminating. On the other hand, the order of the discussion is repetitive, quite poorly organized (e.g., illiquidity risk is described in a number of chapters), and often superficial, which greatly limits the effectiveness of the project. The biggest impediment, however, is that she has not really made a clear-cut choice in her target audience—the board-level fiduciaries who manage the organization or the investment staff who manages the assets.Indicative of this expositional problem is the very loose way in which the central concept of alpha is defined. Simply put, alpha is the difference between the actual return a portfolio generates and the expected return it should have earned. Since the first term is measurable, calculating alpha really comes down to how expected returns are measured. Economists tend to specify a formal risk model (such as the CAPM) for this purpose, while practitioners typically use the return to a benchmark index (or series of indexes) or the average return generated by a peer group. The main difference between these approaches is that the former measures the risk of the portfolio very precisely—hence the notion that alpha is a risk-adjusted return—but may not represent a directly investable alternative. Conversely, comparing actual returns to those of a benchmark, which is often a viable alternative to the manager being evaluated, does not take investment risk into account explicitly.Unfortunately, both definitions of alpha are used interchangeably throughout the book, which makes it difficult to understand how a portfolio’s outperformance is supposed to be delivered. In fact, the text is largely silent on exactly how someone should design a portfolio to beat expected returns, although there are a few examples of macro-oriented trades the author made in the past to help her firm achieve its results. Essentially, alpha comes from two types of active decisions: tactically adjusting the asset class weights in the portfolio or selecting superior securities within those asset classes. This fact is acknowledged with the following statement near the end of the book: “The divergence between sentiment and fundamentals is the most reliable long-term source of alpha.” However, other than some occasional vague directives that one should consider investing whenever securities are misvalued, Ochoa-Brillembourg never really explains how we might make those assessments.Several other topic discussions are flawed as well; I’ll mention two here. The author begins the book with a consideration of something she calls “fit theory”, which is just of way of saying that investors should consider how any potential new investment will affect an existing portfolio. This is not a new concept and she does not provide enough detail for the reader to implement the rule-of-thumb formula she suggests. (In fact, the high-yield bond example she offers as an illustration is not helpful because the correlation coefficient necessary for the calculation would not have been available at the time of the investment.) Particularly surprising was the extremely limited coverage on the topic of how to select (or terminate) the outside managers who are responsible for actually investing the asset class-specific portfolios. This is crucial because for an institution that follows the “external manager” model, all of the alpha delivered by security selection will come from these outside agents. Despite stressing that her firm was a pioneer of what is by now an industry-standard approach, the author devotes just two very brief chapters (i.e., about five pages each) to this essential subject.Of course, Delivering Alpha also contains a lot of good information, even if those discussions are not necessarily integrated into a cohesive whole. Notable among these topics are the process for creating an investment policy statement, how to manage portfolio volatility, responsible employee compensation arrangements, and a company’s organization and culture. The problem, though, is that these insights appear somewhat randomly and they are often interspersed with other points that are either misplaced, redundant, or far too terse to be useful. Perhaps the best way to assess this volume’s potential impact is as follows: If you handed the book to both a trustee and a staff member at an institutional investment firm, would either find a sufficient amount of information to execute their fiduciary duties effectively (to say nothing of producing superior investment performance)? Sadly, I think that the answer to that question is very likely “no”. As such, despite containing many thought-provoking points, the work ultimately falls short of its intended goal.

“Delivering ALPHA” is not a book on finance theory but about the methods utilized by the author, Hilda Ochoa-Brillembourg, to deliver Alpha for decades, while Chief Investment Officer at the World Bank and, later, as CEO of her own firm. In the words of the author is “a practical guide to building intelligent, sensible, and sensibly managed portfolios that will deliver Alpha consistently over time”.This highly specialized subject would limit the reading of the book to financial experts, right? Wrong. Even the non-experts can enjoy this book because it also happens to be a guide on how to live sensibly. The lessons learned by Ochoa-Brillembourg in her World Bank career and, later, in running her company, have direct and evident application to the manner we choose to live our lives. The first one of these lessons says: Price is not value. In finance as in life there is a market price which is the same to all buyers but value is different to different buyers, being a function of its synergistic value when combined with your financial or human portfolio. The author tells us: “The largest factor influencing such value, other than price, expected return and risk, is the correlation of the asset to the rest of your portfolio”. This leads to the Fit Theory, according to which not only the price and intrinsic value of the asset are pertinent to our choice but equally important is the fit to our own needs and circumstances.Although the book is primarily written with the large investors in mind it can also be of great help to the small investors. I was particularly interested in her discussion on the Wisdom of Teams and Governing for Success, the product of her extensive experience in managing investment committees.One of the most important policy decisions the author contributed to her stay at the World Bank was the addition of junk bonds to the portfolio of the institution and how this decision contributed to delivering Alpha.There is much in this superbly written book which makes for compelling reading for all readers hoping to get a better grip on the subject.

This book is not a textbook or cookbook for institutional investors and fiduciaries but a highly readable compendium of investment wisdom gleaned during many years of overseeing pension, endowment, and foundation assets. I'm a little bummed out on this book. I thought to myself when I first saw it listed - "Hey, finally here's a book that goes over the Beaglebone Black." (There aren't many books sad to say). I look in the sample, and see that the author chose Ubuntu over the Angstrom distro (which I cant stand), so I think cool. After working through the getting python up and running, I see the author go over Vision and Audio - over USB, and I go uh-oh. I scan through the rest of the book, and see nothing but USB sensors and devices.NOT ONE FREAKING BLURB ON USING ALL THAT GPIO HARDWARE ON THE BBB.The main excuse is - not wanting the user to damage his board. Duh. Why would I buy this board if I didn't want the hardware? I could have bought another RPi if I wanted that. There a lot easier to set up and use than the BBB.For all I know, the GPIO isn't even functional on the BBB with Ubuntu. Didn't see one iota of proof of it.Another complaint is the level of detail. An author of a book like this shouldn't gloss over detail on getting specific functionality - that is why you bought the book in the first place. With this book, your going to do a lot of googling to get the specifics. Not crazy about that.Other than those grouching points - I would still buy this book, since there are just so few - I just wish the title had been "Beaglebone Black USB Robotic Projects". That would have nailed it on the head, and I would have been aware of what I was getting.I was pretty much snookered on this one.Now you won't be :)

For people who learn by doing,this book will definitely hit the mark. The subject matter is presented through incremental builds of robotics projects, and delivers good value with lots of interesting and stimulating projects. I am definitely happy to own it, and the material gave me at least one or two missions after my current build.Having said that, this book misses out on the deeper elements of the beaglebone. The projects are heavy on integrating usb peripherals, and definitely target more rudimentary features of the beaglebone. I would have liked to see a little more around the GPIO pins, memory mapping to improve performance, and general expansion on the more technical aspects of the beaglebone.This book has plenty of positives going for it though, and I think it is a solid addition to the bookshelf. It was worth the money to me, and I would purchase it again in hindsight. I am still waiting for the brilliant technical reference to the beaglebone, but this book did a very nice job of walking readers through the possibilities of really neat experiments including vision, speech recognition, and autonomous behaviors. Would have gotten the 5th star if it took a dive into more geeky elements of the board.

"This book is designed for the informed beginner." is a quote from the author. I think it pretty accurately describes where I am with the Beaglebone Black. Actually, it is not too far from where I am with Linux as well.The book title suggests that it is for those who have an interest in robotics. I didn't have any interest in robotics when I started, but I do now. I just ordered a Sparkfun 2 wheeled robot platform and a couple of Pololu motor controllers with the intend of building a few of the projects that i didn't have the parts for.The Beaglebone Black can be frustrating - an Arduino clone it is not. But, it is a complete Linux 1Ghz computer with a lot of I/O. The default Angstrom distribution is not as close to being as stable as the Debian Wheezy distruibution supplied with the Raspberry Pi. (As of the time of this review the BBB is likely to get a default Debian distribution very soon.) Mr. Grimmett overcomes this by having you load an Ubuntu distribution on a sd card and boot from it instead. I used a 16GB card and have room to spare after reading the instructions on how to reclaim the unused space on page 89.I liked this book. It was almost a perfect fit for me. I knew the BBB could do lots of things but never really had any luck with some of the online tutorials that I tried. Because of the book I got my USB camera to work, showing video via OpenCV. With one of those cheapie USB sound cards and a Logitech headset I was able to record and play sounds via the ALSA library. I even tried a little speech recognition. This book is very good at showcasing the BBB's built in capabilities and actually getting them to work. If you are really interested, Mr. Grimmett will also show you how you can operate your Beaglebone Black by land, by air or by sea(above and beneath).The book covers programming with Python but is by no means a tutorial on the subject. That statement is pretty much true for robotics as well. Most of the robotics are made of simple to use USB type controllers for motors and servos and other sensors. Simple to use doesn't mean cheap! There is no doubt other ways of skinning this cat but I believe the author would have caused himself no end of grief by trying to describe a cheaper, more "solder it yourself" type of construction. To be honest, I had no idea you could build a robot by plugging in a bunch of controllers into a powered USB hub.So, should you buy this book? Well, if you're an "informed beginner", by all means. I found it a lot of fun - not only getting my Beaglebone Black to do something but giving me more much needed confidence with Linux. I am also looking forward to the day my robot parts arrive. There is a lot to get from this book.

With power of the BeagleBone Black available, this book starts with teaching your platform to speak, hear, and see, then become mobile. Then we explore multiple types of platforms including aerial and waterborne. What fun! Very nicely done.

Truly a gem for anyone interested in robotics projects using BeagleBone. This book has saved me uncountable hours of research into common challenges for robotics projects using this SBC. I highly recommend it.

A very, very funny book. I was taking care of grand sons, ages 11 and 8, while parents were gone for two nights overnight. The 8 year old always is sad when his mom is gone and its hard for him to relax enough to go to sleep. I used this book as a diversion and it really worked! He was laughing and giggling and totally forgetting his mom was not with him at bed time. Made it a lot easier!

Let me start by saying that Shel Silverstein can do no wrong. I have been a fan of his from his first book. As one child who checked out Where the Sidewalk Ends said, "He's so silly but I like him." Runny Babbit lives up to its subtitle -- a Billy Sook. Words turn backwards and animals have silly ideas. Perfect for a book to read to your little ones. Fun for the older kids to play with the words and create their own Billy Sook.Thank you, Shel.

I've been a fan of Shel Silverstein's work since I was a kid. Intrigued by his poetry back then, I now work as a Private Tutor and have used a lot of his books to help children with learning to read on the next level (or those who are simply struggling with reading as they tend to just find it "boring.")Of course, getting children to develop better reading skills will only happen if they practice reading consistently. Reading a book they enjoy will certainly help hold their interest and make them WANT to read. Books packed with funny poems are definitely a good method to try. Kids WILL want to read them!My First Grade student who I tutor in Reading (among other subjects) absolutely LOVES reading poems by Shel Silverstein. What he used to find boring, he now finds interesting and fun. We started with "Where The Sidewalk Ends" and he just couldn't get enough. I ended up purchasing "A Light In The Attic" for him to read as well and, of course, "Runny Babbit."You can expect the same Shel Silverstein humor & entertainment from "Runny Babbit," but it's also a bit different as, just like the title, the poems contain words with 'backwards' letters & kids can't help but laugh at this (and they DO understand how the first letter of the words have been reversed).I definitely recommend this book to any child who enjoys reading, likes humor in poetry as well as children who need that extra "push" to get them interested in reading more. (I should also mention it does make us adults chuckle quite often as well!)

If you can remember "Hee Haw" television and remember when they read about Rindercella and her stugly ep sisters, then you'll enjoy seeing this type of fun in print. After watching the television program when I was a young mother and auntie to nephews and niece, there were times when story reading became a time for ME to have a bit more fun with the books that I had read so many, many times. At that time, the kids did NOT like me to read their favorite stories in the odd fashion but I got a kick out of it. I found Runny Babbit was available while looking for Shel Silverstein books for my granddaughters. The copy I got was a used library copy so the price was right and I bought it for them. I reviewed the book before giving it to them and I hope it will bring them some fun story time off and on in the years to come. Runny Babbit takes a little getting used to until your mind engages in the fun and stops trying to work so hard. Makes you laugh. In the Silverstein tradition, it is short prose and not a continuing story throughout the book. Personally, I think it is just as much fun to take a story we are all familiar with, like Cinderella and her ugly step sisters and read it the 'wrong' way and have a few laughs too.

Shel, I love you, and I appreciate the artistic nature of this book, but I fail to see the point of using this style. It would have been funnier if interesting word were created by the transcription of letters, but unfortunately those are few and far between. I advise buyers that this is not a good book to read to youngsters who are still learning to read because it will confuse the bejesus out of their poor little minds.

The plays on words are a lot of fun for adults to read, but are difficult to read aloud and impossible for young children to follow. We got this to read to our 3-1/2 year old grandson, for which it's a failure, although we do enjoy it ourselves.

Some parts of this book are read every nite to my grandson's satisfaction. The boy doesn't really understand how swapping letters changes things - all that is so far beyond him. However, the sound of the unfamiliar words charms him into squeals​ of laughter every single time his parents read it to him. This will be a winner even if your youngster doesn't understand the relationship between "Runny Babbit" and "Bunny Rabbit".

It's bad enough trying to keep your kid's interest reading books, but this one is just confusing for both of us. Having to keep going back and explain what I just read? Every sentence?...

I think the casual, non-scholarly reader will be frustrated by long passages that serve to fix the location using dozens of place names, in two or more languages. Sometimes the linguistic geography lessons will go on for pages, and though it's invaluable information, it's frankly impossible to comprehend without taking notes or having some familiarity with the area.When he does describe daily events in plain English the writing is genuine and the feeling transcends the century-long gap between that age, and today.In the back of the book is a transcript of Ownen's daily diary. It reads like a ship's log, and I found this useful for following the story across a map.I enjoyed the book very much, but I can see why it's not a popular adventure tale. It's very much as if he were writing to a globe-trotting college chum using causal 1920s parlance. You have to be okay with delving into chinese history and 1920's politics of inner mongolia. It's not really written for a popular audience that wants a classic story arc.Lots of caravan action- but that's maybe 30% of the scope of this book.

Owen Lattimore, the successively famous Chinese and Mongolian scholar and much debated presumptive "comunist agent" of the McCartney period, wrote this book in 1927 after his incredible caravan voyage along the then unmapped "Winding Road" in Inner Mongolia of 1926. The reason for this ethnological feat was the Author's convinction that caravan days were going to disappear with the progress beeing made in China by railways and roads and as he puts it: "I wanted to feel the strange and actual life of the past which we usually accept without thought as the dead background of our present". The choice of the Winding Road instead of the more common and mapped Silk Road routes was determined by the then dangerous traveling conditions due to war going on in China. Lattimore's intention must be kept in mind while reading this exquisite work. Many of the apparent drawbacks of the book such as the excessive detail in the use of foreign toponyms, the frequent digressions into prices of wares, habits of people, legends and stories related to places are in reality a treasure of knwoledge that has been preserved for ever. However, the "winding" of Lattimore's prose and thoughts does not hinder the enjoyability of this adventure, because the Desert Road is an adventure book of the best tradition. The adventure of a smart and curious and brave young man that is completely engrossed in his dream but at the same times does not recoil from living and learning from the men he travels with. The characters such as Moses, the Villainous Camel Puller and Wa-wa, the Eldest Son of the House of Chou are etched with great care and deep understanding and even if there are no "strong episodes", the interactions among them is interesting to follow and works like the backbone of the story. But the real magic of the book is the description of the days, the atmospheres and the landscapes, the animals (camels and others), the physical excertion and the the inconveniences and the moments of joy and peace.The Black Gobi is looming in the back of the whole story with its camel skeletons and buried water wells. The book also offers many photographs shot by the Author that illustrate significant episodes and people.I think this book is an indispensable read in the approach to Inner Mongolia and its traditions and represents at the same time a specialistic and a non-specilistic historical document that will not be forgotten like many other travel books of those times.P.S. If one is curious on the House of the False Lama (see the more recent George Crane's Beyond the House of the False Lama) in the DRTT you can find many answers.The introduction by the Author's son David Lattimore helps to contextualize the book and gives many useful information for cross-references.

A wonderful book describing a journey of incredible difficulty undertaken by a lone American about 90 years ago, who hired himself some camels and walked across the Gobi Desert by himself.

Unlike the "famous explorer" preceding him, he did not have a staff of servants and a caravan of his own; rather, he, with his old family servant and his hired camel man joined one of many caravans plying the road between the Eastern China and Xinjiang along the "Winding Road" of the Gobi, avoiding the customs extortions of both the newly independent Outer Mongolia and the warlord governments of various Chinese provinces. Having to move along with trade caravans, Lattimore regretted his inability to make detours to various sites of interest away from the main route; but, on the other hand, spending 5 months walking and living along with the people and camels of the Gobi allowed him an unparalleled opportunity to learn about their way of life and their view of the world. Did you know that the camel pullers were able to supplement their income by spinning yarn and then knitting or crocheting socks or scarves while walking along their camels, the animals readily supplying any wool they needed? Or that Gansu migrants to a small oasis in Xinjiang, not having professional Taoist priests, would be able to carry out necessary rituals in the community's Taoist shrine using their own joint efforts? Minor details - what one did with oatmeal to make it more edible, or how much one would have to pay for a sheep - may be boring for some readers, but put together they give a realistic feeling of what it was like to live in that time and place.The world of the people of the desert was a cruel world, and Lattimore's era was far from "political correctness" of any kind. But he was able to understand the common humanity of all of us, and to share his insights with his readers.

I like the book itself, but I would like to warn that the kindle edition is horrendous. The Kindle version is almost impossible to read, the formatting is dreadful as fond sizes are all over the place and tables or drawings are often scrambled. Is it really so hard to provide something that is anywhere near pdf quality?Amazon should be ashamed of their kindle format. If they can't produce a decent electronic version, they should not sell it. I just threw 60 out of the window.Unfortunately, I have quite a few kindle versions of textbooks that are like that. Pity. Stay away from any kindle book that seems good value compared to the hardcover.

Hard concept, hard book to read. Its worth having to try and get a hold on the material, because guaranteed your professor will breed through their notes like you are a organic chemist of 10 years

After one term of having this book, I decided to becomea chemist. It grabbed me really hard and made me realizethe complexity and wonder of chemistry (something I hadn't experienced with freshman chem.) If you are a chemistry major, this is definitely the book you will want to use. If your prof is using a different text, I'd definitely keep a copy of this one to use as a second opinion, at least. It is extremely well-written and it's written at a high level. In other words, itdoesn't just string you along and give you the basics...it delves deeply into reaction mechanisms and what isactually happening in each reaction. Product yields formany reactions are included, and this is quite useful.The writing style makes you learn a new way of thinking - that of a scientist. At times, the syntax is a little "brainy"(they refer to acetone by its IUPAC name, "propanone",for instance, and they refer to ethylene oxide as "oxacyclopropane".) I had an earlier version of this book in class when I took organic many years ago, but the revisions are mostly in presentation and in the problem sets. True, the problems in each chapter are not always good. If your instructor is good, they will provide their own problems to supplement the book's. But my suggestion is to go ahead and just do a web search for old exams and problems given by profs at other schools. Many of these are great and will give you tons of insight. For those who have already graduated, this is a good and up-to-date book to keep with you in your graduate studies or in the lab if you work in such a capacity.

I'm using it to study by myself over the summer and it is very helpful. The wording is very clear and lets you think mechanistically. The info boxes are interesting. Get this edition if you can because it is so much cheaper.

I bought this book for a college Organic Chemistry Course... Well written and easy to understand, it helped explain Organic Chemistry theory.

I agree with the other reviewer....Elsa is definitely no nonsense ..to the point.My biggest disappointment with the book is it seemed so geared towards women who are currently in high profile careers...even beauty related. I pursued my career until 32 when I started having children. I don't think Elsa ever makes any reference to a woman that does anything other than a high profile career.As a mother of two young children...I may not be attending posh nightly parties...and the like...however I still have an interest in maintaining and developing my style. This book seemed a little too geared toward the entertainment/modelling industry for me.I do appreciate her closing comments "to choose something just because you like it...is not enough"This is a big mistake I made for years...buying clothes and accesories cause I liked them....not because they suited me.I learned the hard way.All in all there were a few good tips....but more practical examples and pictures would have better served the books purpose....and less photos of paper thin models who make up such a small percentage of the North American population

She flew in a plane piloted by hard-drinking Bill Stultz, she piloted a plane that she was incapable of handling, and she was not proficient in Morse code or radio operation. Earhart is also shown to be concerned about her appearance and perhaps manipulated by her publicity-seeking husband, George Putnam. Earhart may have been interested in women's independence, but her search for personal glory is more obvious here. Bull speculates that Earhart's plane ran out of fuel, but she also explores a few of the more sensational theories regarding her subject's disappearance. The style of this graded reader is clear and lively. The book begins with a fictionalized account of Earhart's childhood interest in flying, but the rest of it is straight narrative. The illustrations are particularly interesting, with many photos, maps, and watercolors. Sidebars with photos and captions expand on the main text or give a glimpse at the historical period. Since all opinions are now characterized by your political leanings, I will disclose that I've voted Republican my entire life until the Barak Obama. election. The extreme right wing of the Republican party has overtaken common sense (demonstrated throughout this book) and leaves no place for a centrist like me. Therefore I am an independent, definitely not a Democrat but now I attempt to vote against anything the right wing supports.This book lays out the assault on true journalism under the guise of liberal bias. And while I don't argue there may be some bias, labeling everything someone doesn't agree with as bias is astounding to me. Charting the full course, this book really picks up steam leading to the 2010 election showing the McCarthy tactics used against Acorn and the lady accused of racism concerning a white GA farmer which eventually cost her her job. I was aware that the farm executive was incorrectly accused. Reading this book was the first time I had heard a counterbalancing story of Acorn. I choose at this time to form no opinion on the Acorn issue without further facts.Further time is spent on hiring political candidates prior to the election and fundraising and cheer leading on Fox by the opinion shows purported to be news. I know quite a few journalists, mostly in sports, and have great respect for the profession. But rather than this book shaking that belief to its core, my conclusion is that Fox is just not journalism. Something even Ailes admits in closing statements in the book.This is a fascinating read but may not be worth your time. It can be long winded and is repetitive in nature as it attempts to chronologically build its case. Personally, I generally don't like books that present only one side of a story as is done here.I choose to close with a quote from an architect friend in another country where I have a home, "we love America. We hate your politics". This from the father of a child whose dream was to visit the states and I was fortunate to arrange this twice. Watching him learn of our country was a true delight. But our we killing our dream? When someone always has to be right and shouting and not listening becomes the norm, is this America? I worry for my country and the mentality of fringes on BOTH sides run the risk of destroying our great land. This book discusses in length a negative force abusing the freedoms in America, Fox News. There are better ways to present your arguments

Why didn't the Beltway media see what Fox "News" was up to as soon as the rest of us? Was it really that hard? I realize they're reporters and have to present the patina of objectivity but come on. Defending them when they were called on it? I sort of wish we would just ignore them. They don't deserve the validity of their arguments.This book is thoroughly researched and well cited. The authors presented the facts without much opinion, quite frankly I would have preferred some but I guess I'll have to suffice with my own outrage.Everyone should read this book.

The Fox Effect is a tawdry tale of the Right's attempt to sell the American public a "story." And sadly, far too many people have bought the bill of goods these "story tellers", aka entertainers put on the airwaves. Propaganda is a bit too nice a word to describe the vile nature of much that goes on with this network. Another nonsense organization that is on the airwaves as a direct result of President Richard Nixon's elimination of the "fairness in broadcasting" doctrine that used to temper anyone on the airwaves. You think Rush "the class clown" Limbaugh has anything meaningful to say, really?

I disagree with many of the reviewers. I don't view this book as political. I read it hoping it might provide proof that Fox is intentional in its distortion, something that I've suspected but never been able to prove. I'm not really big on left or right wing politics but I am interested in whether the masses are getting accurate news or propaganda.I read 'The Economist' for news rather than watch TV. I never considered intentional distortion of the news until I watched Jon Stewart showing various Fox broadcasters using the same exact descriptive language in the span of a day. Specifically, all the Fox anchors abandoned the term "Public Option" when discussing what eventually became Obamacare in favor of a new term, namely, "Government Run Healthcare." Again, all Fox anchors made this switch on a single day. Anybody who has watched Stewart's show knows that this happens a lot on Fox. Thinking that there's too much coincidence involved,the only explanation I could think of was that certain terms come down to the anchors right from the top.Whether one is left or right in their political beliefs, it is disturbing if the language used by news broadcasters is manipulated by someone higher up at a network. This book provides footnoted proof that such shenanigans go on regularly at Fox. Worse, some anchors have raised money on the air for political rallies. Compare this with MSNBC firing Olberman because he donated money to political causes. For anyone who compares MSNBC with Fox, this is a huge difference.The book provides footnoted documentation of what appears to be a very good case of Fox moving into propaganda rather than the news. Can you imagine some CBS executive in the 1970's telling Walter Cronkite which language to use? "Hey Walter, make sure you say 'government run health care' instead of 'public option' today." Ha Ha.Some of the reviewers posting about this book sound angry, whether on the left or right. I don't see the need for anger or for love toward this book. It is not edited extremely well but the ideas are important, so I gave it 4 stars. If investigative journalism and accountability of news organizations becomes extinct, I will be scared for our future a lot more than whether Romney or Obama is elected.I have highly educated friends who believe Fox is under attack by left wingers. They believe that Fox is fair and balanced. I can't stomach such certainty. Now I am armed with this book, which provides footnoted proof that there is serious manipulation and dishonesty in a major news organization.We all need to fight and argue when we hear that there is dishonesty by a news organization. We need to help discredit intentional inaccuracy because if we don't, we'll some day be electing fascists. Especially in a country where more people have heard of Kim Kardashian than Joe Biden.

I often wondered why every time I switched over to any of the Fox channels, they would be saying something negative about our President. It just didn't add up. Than I read this book. Joesph Goebbels would be proud. This book suggests how Roger Allen formed the Fox channel into his person outlet on his political agenda. Good reading, but bad results: Fox could be so much more, like replace the CNN network. But is seems lost into its own message.
