This is an ABRIDGED EDITION!!!! If you need to read this book for school, it might be helpful to know that it is not the complete version and you will be missing a lot of information. Amazon failed to mention it!!! Now I will have to find the original version and read it... again!!! What a waste of time!!!!

This book knocked my socks off. My limited knowledge of the battle to integrate Little Rock's Central High in 1957 didn't prepare me for Melba Moore Beals's account of the daily ordeal she and the other children had to survive to endure a year on the front lines of school integration. Should be required reading for all adults in our country-- and probably for high school students, too. The past is never dead. It's not even past.

The book itself is wonderful however, I was looking for an unabridged version for my child's school assignment, and the product summary did not indicate that this was not the unabridged version. I was very disappointed when I received the book and had to go elsewhere to find the version I was looking for.

I read this book in 8th grade. I read half of this book each niggt at bedtime with my 11 year old daughter and we discussed racism, as that has been a big issue in our country lately and I wanted her to understnad the history behind where these news stories are coming from. Hearing some of the language in this book was difficult, but necessary to allow us to understand why we never want to go back to a time like that again. Yes, my daughter learned the N word...and a few other swear words in this book. But we also learned some valuable lessons about our country, including racism, bigotry, sexism, friendship, economics, and inequality. We also made connections to faith in God and ourselves when things are difficult.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading the recollections and experiences of Melba. Well written and moving account of that first year in Central High. She does a nice job of sticking to the events as she experienced them without adding unnecessary commentary. She lets the events speak for themselves. Highly recommend.

I felt this book was so well written, as only Melba could have done. I was enthralled by her descriptive passages of the injury she and her friends endured. It's a page turner that I could barely put down. Loved her Grandma and the faith that saw her through. I was in junior high in CA at the time. Our schools were already integrated. This book really opened my eyes to the horrible conditions in Arkansas .

I'm so glad the author kept this piece of our history alive. When we read the headlines, it's clear we're not past the inequalities, the hatred, the self-justifications of the toxic racism the author experienced. I'd like to thank her here for remaining so stalwart and dignified. The author gives us insights into how difficult it is to break the barriers. The people who could'nt support her were certainly not evil, not moral slackers... they knew first-hand the power of the institutionalized hatred, and they knew the potential cost to their families... Not a mild rebuke. Not some mild social disapproval. One's house could be burned down in the middle of the night, or blown up. Lynchings were not unknown. And to add fuel to the fire, the local authorities, the state government, the military units called in were complicit in the open threats of violence — and sometimes the instances of actual violence — perpetrated against this handful of teenagers.

Read this book along with my daughter for her PreAP English class.Gut-wrenching. The writing is superb but the pain and horror of the author's experience as part of the "Little Rock 9" left me aching for those who have also been victimized due to race, religion, and sexual orientation. I highly recommend reading this book as a means of discussing the turbulent Civil Rights era with your child but also as a springboard to conversations concerning issues of bullying, persecution, and bigotry in our culture today.

I am reviewing the Kindle edition of this book which currently sells for less than the price of a cup of coffee. Price alone wouldn't warrant a positive review (there's plenty of junk on sale for a dollar), but happily this is a serviceable little book for neophytes and philosophy students alike. The book has an active table of contents and is fully searchable with hyperlinks laced generously through the text referring to earlier and later chapters, as well as footnotes.The 100 philosophers are chosen judiciously (partisans can quarrel about glaring omissions and dubious inclusions, but in general choices are non-controversial) and presented more or less in chronological order. More or less, I say, because the author has thought to present the individual philosophers under general headings, so occasionally chronology bows down to conceptual structure. The headings include, for example The Presocratics; The Eleatics: The Academics; The Atomists; The Cynics; Stoics; The Skeptics; Neoplatonists ; Scholastics etc. until we reach The Existentialists;The linguistic Turn; The Postmodernists and The New Scientists (Godel, Turing, Kuhn, Quine et al.) Though these spoonfuls on each philosopher are very broad overviews, they are surprisingly useful as either quick references or refreshers.Most pleasing for me was the generous links from chapter to chapter. Let's say you are reading "Derrida" and see a reference to linguist Saussure or anthropologist Levi-Strauss. No need for wikipedia if you don't know them or grasp the reference. Just click on the names ("Saussure") and voila, your back to the chapter about him. I had fun bouncing around, and seeing these connections, particularly for authors I hadn't read for some time.As someone in the field of philosophy, I view this as one of several handy reference books in my kindle Fire. I wouldn't read it cover to cover, but from what I have read, there are no egregious errors that I noticed, so curious readers, 1st or 2nd year undergrads and even the more advanced can shell out the 99 cents with--I would bet-- no fear of buyer's remorse. A handy little e-book.

I found Philip Stokes' Philosophy: 100 Essential Thinkers to be a real gem—the writing is clear, the content substantial, and the organization precise. Serving as a brief overview of Western philosophy, Stokes' work captures meaningful snapshots of a 100 different philosophers in 382 pages—designating about three pages to each thinker. Divided into 22 sections, Philosophy: 100 Essential Thinkers categorizes each philosopher by camps (the Presocratics, the Eleatics, the Academics, the Atomists, the Cynics, the Stoics, the Sceptics, the Neoplatonists, the Christians, the Scholastics, the Age of Science, the Rationalists, the Empiricists, the Idealists, the Liberals, the Evolutionists, the Pragmatists, the Materialists, the Existentialists, the Linguistic Turn, the Postmodernists, and the New Scientists). Since a three page presentation can only serve as an introduction to a person's work, Stoke's makes every sentence count. He introduces and explains their major ideas, along with the context they lived in, who they were influenced by, and in turn who they later influenced. An important reason I chose this book is "the Linguistic Turn". In this section, capturing philosophers from the 20th century, Stokes describes thirteen philosophers—by for more than any other category. "The Linguistic Turn" describes present day, mainstream academic philosophy in America—an area of philosophy I am unfamiliar with for several reason, mostly because I have full-heartedly followed a lineage of philosophy, which we can call "Integral" or "Holistic", that has rarely entered mainstream academics. I find leaving out this lineage of integral philosophy—including thinkers such de Chardin, Grof, Wilber, Laszlo, Sheldrake, etc— to be a short-coming of the book; after Hegel, it doesn't include any of these thinkers, except for the surprising inclusions of both Bergson and Whitehead. All these integral thinkers embraced a panpsychist perspective, a major element in my life, but not following this path is precisely why I chose this book, because, like the mainstream, it ended up following a different philosophical lineage than myself—one grounded in materialism and disembodied rationality. I felt angry while reading "the Linguistic Turn", and becoming aware of the state of modern day philosophy. Up until the 20th century, what I saw reading the book was the unfolding of Western philosophy, moving from thinker to thinker—a beautiful story taken in about 80 different snapshots, each person bringing in the richness of different ideas—until we get to the logic and linguistics after Existentialism—then it all gets stale. Before this point, whether or not I agreed with each thinker of the more than 2,500 year movement, each passionately made metaphysical and social statements and authentically tried to understand themselves, the universe, and humanity—many making deeply meaningful contribution to knowledge and society. In comparison, 20th century philosophy—reduced to nothing more than meaning in language—seems like a massive detour; and arguably made no significant contribution to our culture. I had an impression of the absurdity philosophy has been reduced to in higher education, but now I know; I feel thoroughly disappointed. I am shocked what Western society has done to what I consider the most beautiful human discipline—we need to resuscitate what once was the greatest container for human knowledge and wisdom. That being said, by summarizing different pivotal thinkers that have influenced much of what we know, this book has much to offer. I believe this book is a must read for every philosopher—not because it brings an over-arching philosophical perspective like Passion of the Western Mind, or other books presenting a story of philosophy, but because it serves as a great companion to such books—since the writer delivers no philosophical perspective of his own, but simply gives a Wikipedia like description of each thinker. I have come to see that Western philosophy, as a discipline, carries a story—and includes its own myths, like that of Socrates and Galileo—and this book serves to deepen one's understanding of the characters in the play. For a long time I have wanted greater familiarity with the players we see in philosophical works, and reading a book on each person takes too long; Philosophy: 100 Essential Thinkers helps fill in some of the cracks. The only off-putting quality of the book is its large 14 size font; it makes the book seem less serious—though I am sure it was done to make the book look user friendly and accessible to the lay person. Still, the book definitely does not lack in content. Overall, it is an enjoyable read and serves as a great introduction to 100 lives—including biographical content, great works, and original ideas—that made major intellectual contributions in the evolution of Western society.

Having searched for the one book that encapsulates the history of philosphy in a chronological order, I have found thisto be the one. Each section on each philosopher summarizes their main points and allows for comparisons over theages. I would recommend this book to anyone curious in the evolution of the study of thought and how each period inhistory influenced it.

Love this book! The concepts are spot on - and so important for anyone who engages with kids in any capacity (teacher, parent, coach, etc). As a parent of teens, a self-defense teacher, and a coach, I have been implementing these life-skills daily and have seen results. Krissy and Sarah's powerful personal stories and examples are interesting and hook you in right away. It's helpful how they describe the skills and then thoroughly explain how to apply them. I highly recommend it!

This book has been a huge blessing to my teaching career. It teaches you specific way to empower your students and create problem-solvers. It has worked wonders in how I relate to my students and parents both. My classroom has been less stressful and more manageable this year since using Brave Teaching methods. It’s a must read for teachers.

I am a teacher at a high school where the students perform very well academically but are often highly stressed. With all of the demands and stressors in today's world, it is imperative that our children develop emotional resiliency to be both successful AND well-adjusted. Schools can greatly help our children grow in this area but frankly many teachers, administrators, and parents struggle with resiliency themselves or are unable to properly articulate to students what it means to be emotionally resilient.It is critical that we as adults value students feelings and struggles, while helping children to curtail their negative behaviors and take ownership to solve their own problems as much as possible. But it takes hard work and some initial discomfort at a new way of thinking. It's difficult for adults to avoid getting frustrated or to avoid trying to fix the problem. We have to resist this urge, so that students are more accountable for solving their own problems. Unfortunately, most professional development focuses on instructional issues and not enough on cultivating students' resiliency and problem-solving to support academic growth - beyond what I feel are generalities and nonspecific platitudes.This is why Brave Teaching is so helpful. The author does an excellent job of outlining how to help students improve their resiliency and problem-solving. Strategies are presented in a clear, concise fashion. The strategies are relatively easy to implement once you get the hang of it, and the examples provided to highlight the strategies are easy to follow and present a balanced perspective of some of the challenges which may occur. Teachers are given language and vocabulary to help them become more consistent and natural with executing the strategies. Frankly, the book is a quick read and easy to comprehend.I really enjoyed Brave Teaching and look forward to refining my practice in the coming school year. If you are a current teacher or going to be a new teacher in September, read this book. I promise that you will find it extremely helpful.

As a high-school teacher of 14 years, classroom management has always been the area that I struggled with most. I’ve always believe in natural consequences, but every year, I end up frustrated with my students and their behavior. I often took their behavior personally and would feel defeated with myself. When I was first approached with a copy of Brave Teaching, I was incredibly interested Krissy Pozatek’s background in wilderness therapy because that work has always fascinated me. However, I was wary that it wouldn’t apply to my suburban, high-school classroom. As I began reading, that wariness dissipated almost immediately. I quickly learned that, in my natural consequences approach, I was relying on the belief that by high school my students had been taught how to self-regulate their behavior. Essentially, I was expecting my students to utilize tools, but in all likelihood they had never been taught them to identify or utilize those tools. As I continued to read the book, I found great, applicable ways to help my students hold themselves accountable for their behavior and the consequence of their behavior. I’m excited to start implementing Brave Teaching into my classroom and see if I can shift the culture.

I have been teaching for many years. Like lots of educators I dread professional development because I often feel like it is stuff I've heard before. This book is full of inspiring, innovative, and invigorating ideas. From the very beginning where Internal-Resiliency Skills are listed I was hooked. I must use the term "problem-solve 6-10 times a day with my students. I teach middle school students. Many will be first generation college graduates and this book give real life, practical solutions for how to develop internal-resiliency skills in students. The "life-trail" exercise is something I will be using with my middle school students. Helping my students learn healthy problem-solving skills is CRITICAL to their education. I intend to share this with administration. This book gives practical of how to develop problem-solving skills in students. The book is a must read!

My family and I spent 2 months in Wyoming this summer. I bought this book in preparation for the trip. Thank goodness I had this book. We traveled must of the suggested routes and were thoroughly please that we did. The routes are well documented and hazards are noted. Points of Interest are described. This book is a cheap investment for a once in a lifetime trip.

Consulted this book repeatedly during out recent trip through Wyoming.

Perfect book for trip planning. Gives you enough information about roads and attractions so you can plan accordingly.

This is the only great book out there I have found on driving Wyoming. It isn't perfect, because it is has only a few color photos and was published in 1996, but since it is the only one out there, it is priceless. My wife and I discovered Wyoming a few years ago and it is truly an experience not to be missed. We have driven almost all the scenic routes in this book and like or love them all. Wyoming is very quiet and has this helpful, small town feel about it that my wife and I crave when off of our busy urban jobs. When we drove the snowy range in south-central WY we were literally the only ones there (and this was in August!). When we reached the Dead Indian pass in NW WY (Chief Joseph Scenic Highway)and saw the 360 degree panorama of snow capped mountain ranges we felt we were in a different world. All the Big Horn Mountain roads are to die for and they have guardrails for the mountain weary traveler, a great bonus for someone just starting out. Aspen Alley, pictured on the front of the book, seems like something from a movie and does feel like an outdoor cathederal in everyway, and again when we were there we had it all to ourselves. If my wife and I could go back in time, we would have been married there, under the golden aspen trees. I could go on and on, but if you can get this book filled with culture, history, side roads, maps, and great road information for $7 like I did, grab it and go get a rental car. Your eyes will be filled with some of the most beautiful treasures on Earth.

Ordered this for our trip to Jackson Hole as a guided of where to go and what to see. Very helpful.

This book is a very concise guide to driving tours in Wyoming. It was a big help in planning our trip. The only complaint I have is that I wish it contained more pictures. The information is extremely valuable for older folks like us who can no longer hike much, but still want to enjoy fantastic scenery.

My first red flag was in the author's first chapter, when he used significant space to rant against President Obama's use of executive orders to move forward things that his intransigent Congress was unwilling to tackle (take immigration reform, for example). With no mention of the fact that President Bush before him used far more EOs. I then took a look at his list of proposed Amendments to the Constitution. While there are ones I could support, like term limits for federal and Supreme Court justices, his takes on limiting taxes and reverting to state's rights started ringing familiar. So, I looked him up. First, he is president of the Landmark Legal Foundation, which is a conservative think tank which, according to SourceWatch, an "important part of its strategy is filing complaints with government agencies on various issues." Another important strategy is "defunding the Left", it supports school vouchers, and it went after Wisconsin judges who signed on to a recall petition against the State's governor, Scott Walker. And according to Wikipedia, the organization nominated Rush Limbaugh for the Nobel Prize.That ought to be enough to alert you to the extreme bias of this author. I am sorry I bought this book. Should have done my research beforehand.

There is a video on YouTube called "Don't Be A Sucker." It was created by the US government during WWII to combat just this sort of garbage. It is about 20 minutes long and is very well done.The key part - and I'm paraphrasing - happens just after a WASPy looking guy has been listening to a man deliver a soapbox harangue about how foreigners and minorities are taking all the jobs, and so forth. He just keeps picking on group after group. The WASPy guy is enthralled. The orator is saying everything he wants to hear.Eventually, the orator picks on Freemasons. Now the WASPy guy says, "Hey, wait a minute! I'M a Mason!" So the guy next to him says, "You liked him until he said that, didn't you?"He then continues: "Beware of this kind of divisive talk. Whenever people are saying these kinds of things, SOMEONE'S GOING TO BENEFIT FROM IT, AND IT ISN'T GOING TO BE YOU."He explains about how the Nazis promised the German people the sun, the moon, and the stars; and then proceeded to treat them like crap. They overworked them, lied to them, and committed crimes in their name. Nobody got what was promised. It was all a ploy to give powerful men unchecked power, and it worked because there are always powerful men who know how to exploit people's fears. They conjure up boogeymen and position themselves as the solution, knowing that frightened, weak-minded people are easily misled. Of course, it's always a big lie.Truly, this old war film is a clarion call: DON'T BE A SUCKER!!!This book is basically a love letter to the Koch brothers and other 1%ers who look on the rest of humanity as a teeming mass of filthy insects. At the center of their minds - and Levin's - are howling voids that demand infinite money. But these voids can never be filled. No number of billions of dollars will ever be enough for them to be satisfied. They must have as much money as possible.They want to put an end to welfare, Medicare, and Medicaid. They want to put an end to anything that could possibly result in them being taxed for anything that doesn't benefit them directly. If a senior citizen who's too old and sick to work has to eat dog food or starve because their pills are too expensive, or spend winter without heat, they don't care. If some kid through no fault of their own is malnourished due to cutting food stamps or school lunch programs, their attitude is, "Let them eat cake."The Kochs are trying to make a Constitutional Convention, and their plan is to push these very amendments.Why do you suppose that is???Do you suppose it's for the benefit of the common citizen???Do you imagine they're on your side???They're not. They're on THEIR side. WE ARE ALL DISGUSTING INSECTS TO THEM AND NOTHING MORE.DON'T BE A SUCKER!!! THEIR RHETORIC IS INTENDED TO BENEFIT ***THEM***!!! NOT YOU!!!

I like to do my homework. I research as many ideas as I can before deciding my viewpoint on any subject. So, I bought Levin's book. I read the index page and thought, ok, there are some ideas here worth taking a look at. Then I started reading. Instead of supporting his ideas with facts and thoughtful pose there was nothing here but overly dramatic rhetoric. Rather than provide insight he decided to focus on incitement. I have no respect for someone who uses drama and rhetoric to make a living. I don't believe for one moment that he believes any of the crap he spews here.

After reading the first collection of Ms. Marvel and generally liking it I decided to give the second collection a shot. Unfortunately, this collection didn't rise to the first collection's level.On the plus side, the artwork is still as good as it was in the previous collection. And as long as you know nerd culture (a stretch for anyone trying to buy comic books, you'll enjoy Wilson's brand of humor. But that isn't enough to cover for the books flaws.First, this book continues to ignore one of the things it keeps advertising: Kamala's culture. Half of the series tagline is 'strict parents', and Kamala has one of the most Laissez faire families I've seen. She never actually gets grounded for going out at night, she has no problem playing World of Warcraft and writing avengers fan-fiction, she adopts a clearly mutant dog, and the worst they do is grumble for two pages. I don't know why Marvel insists on trying to have it both ways by having her family pretend to be far more orthodox than they actually are.But the bigger problem I have is the actual plot of this story. The inventor gets a lot more to do in this collection, and he is a very ineffective villain. His first plan, which features an appearance by Wolverine, doesn't make sense when you think about it. But that doesn't compare to his second plan, which is simply painfully stupid. Wilson tries to make a big metaphor about how adults are wrong to think teenagers are useless, but she has to turn everyone into such strawmen it ruins the whole story.I honestly can't recommend this comic. If you're looking for light-hearted superhero antics, I hear Mark Waid's Daredevil run is good.

We pick up with Kamala still chasing after and battling the same villain as the previous volume. She’s conflicted about her new role (aka Ms Marvel) and learning to use her powers which I think makes her more human and relatable to me. Kamala really showed a lot of character growth. She also realizes that sometimes standing together makes you stronger and this volume raised a lot of awareness about our generation and how we need the chance to prove ourselves. I loved it.We also start to see things begin to fall into place and actually gain some traction with the plot line. I was definitely more invested in this volume than the first one. It still didn’t wow me, but did hold my attention better. Also, the art in the first two issues is by a different artist. Not sure why that was but I wasn’t a huge fan of it. I really liked that it had a previously paragraph to refresh me because it had been a month or two gap between the volumes.Overall, I still enjoyed this volume and think that the series is getting better, but its just not gripping me like I had hoped. I’m going to keep going though with hopes it finally will.

The Ms. Marvel opening volume very deservedly won a Hugo Award last year for Best Graphic Story. Three follow up volumes published in 2015 show Ms. Marvel was no one-hit wonder. Volume 2 might be the weakest of those three, but that’s praising with faint damnation.Adrian Alphona drew Volume 1. The art for Volume 2 was split between Alphona and Jacob Wyatt, who drew issues 6 and 7. Reading vols. 2-4 has made me realize how important Alphona’s art was to my enjoyment of Volume 1. Miyazawa’s and Bondoc’s art from Volume 3 is pretty good, though. I didn’t care for Wyatt’s art at all.The focal point of the volume is her clash with the Inventor, set up in vol. 1. The volume concludes the arc—OR DOES IT? I understand the exigencies of comic demand openings be left for recursive storytelling, but I appreciate that we get a complete and relatively discrete arc. I really enjoyed the contraptions and giant alligators and ALLIGATORS WITH FRIGGIN LASER BEAMS of the Inventor. So I’ll overlook other attendant silliness straight out of the Matrix or Malthus. My only real complaint is that I didn’t get to see the Inventor shout “I AM NOT A BIRD” one more time. (The Generation Why joke, tied in with the Inventor’s nefarious plot, would work better if Kamala wasn’t probably more fairly classed with Generation Z.)Welcome, but less effective, were the addition of a magical teleporting dog, Lockjaw, and a team-up with Wolverine. The latter, in particular, was a bit of a non-sequitur. I’ve always been a huge fan of Wolverine, but that sequence makes me think Marvel doesn’t have confidence in its new character more than anything else. Consequently, the second half of the volume, with Alphona’s art and without Wolverine to distract from the fight against the Inventor, works much better than the first.

I have not read any comic books since I was a pre-teen, but this story has drawn me in. I'm a middle-aged white american male and I thoroughly love this character and her trials and tribulations. The family life and typical teenager situations combined with trying to learn her new powers has made this new Ms. Marvel a fascinating and interesting character. I also really enjoy the humor the writer employs and the drawing are really engaging. Highly recommended.

Loved it. Something for everyone in here. Love how she isn't your typical female super hero with a skimpy super tight outfit andunrealistic body type. I finally got this after reading about its popularity with a wide variety of people and how so many peoplereally liked it after thinking they wouldn't. I'm looking forward to having my daughter (and any subsequent children ;) ) read these when older.

This is at first heft a tome, very weighty physically, but even meatier in the depth and breadth of knowledge and historical data of the life and times of Virginia Woolf. I must say that I have heard her name mentioned so often and in so many tantalizingly vague, but scandalous and semi-scandalous contexts, that I thought I knew more than I really did, which was just a lot of superficial cultural mumbo-jumbo, but in reading this book and a couple others beforehand, have opened my eyes to so much more...that Virginia Woolf was not only a writer of great talent and discernment, and not only intermittently unbalanced emotionally and mentally, and ultimately fatally, but that she was far ahead of her time, not only as an independent woman thinker and reluctant feminist, but as an experimental writer of literary forms, a liberal and freethinker socially, culturally, politically, sexually, economically, and religiously. She was a 'common reader' as she named some of her published works, but only because she considered herself incompletely and home/self educated, since she never received a formal college or university education. This was a bone of contention from which she never fully recovered or would ever be able to fully forgive either her father or the patronizing and limiting patriarchal society into which she was born and reared, and which she resented her entire life, spilling over into resentment for those male members of her social class who she felt were favored with special and exclusive membership into the upper echelon of 'Oxbridge' intellectual life. She managed to excel through sheer strength of mind as well as of her will, and to flourish professionally, as well as become one of the most productive and respected writers of her time, in some instances far exceeding the initial promise and ultimate output of more promising literary luminaries and purported talents. A tour de force of an extraordinary woman's personal journey to 'becoming and being', with a well-deserved place in twentieth century literature and an enduring legacy.

As a former teacher of college English and lifetime student of English literature, I eagerly anticipated reading Hermione Lee’s biography of Woolf. Although I’d read Woolf’s novels, letter, and diaries as well as Quentin Bell’s bio and many other critical works about her and Leonard, Lee’s new book immediately impressed me. It’s beautifully written and provides deep background information beyond the normal facts of a life. I’m certain that when I am able to read the book, it will merit five stars. Unfortunately, however, I have not been able to read beyond the fourth chapter. The book is just too big for arthritic hands, and the print is too tiny for old eyes. This is a book that needs to be available in electronic form! Notes to Lee through her web site and to her publishers begging them to authorize a Kindle version got no reply.

I had steered clear of Mrs. Woolf's work due to a perceived effeteness to her aesthetics and apparent lack of a mitigating human touch in her writing.I hold the same effete bias against classical ballet so I guess that dooms me as an open minded art lover. However, on the positive side I am a proud reprobate Londoner. Grew up in High Holborn during the blitz years, lived in Fitzrovia for another 20 years and proud of Bloomsbury's cultural position as a former literary hot spot, as much for Dickens as the later field of effete Bloomsbury writers and artists.However, this biography by Miss Lee is a first class literary work in its own right. It creates, on its own terms, a deeper and more rounded image of Virginia Woolf as a woman, as a feminist, and as a driven thinker and writer. Miss Lee's careful reconstruction of the Stephens family ancestry is followed by discussion of Virginia's own unmet paternal needs and a later traumatic physical intrusion from a male relative. That history offers a credible genetic and psychological explanation for both her creativity and depressions. The liberated personal lives her family and circle practised brought no severe judgments from Miss Lee. I admired -- which may just be my naivete -- Miss Lee's calm recital of the various liaisons and the adult camaraderie and bonds that governed their relationships even after passions cooled. It was certainly not the sort of P.G. Wodehouse world that my adolescent imagination fed on about that period.This book was not at all turgid or too scholarly. My unfamiliarity with Virginia Woolf's works was compensated by Miss Lee's analysis of Virginia's various literary themes and book character explanations. The book moves swiftly touching all the nuances of personality that made up Virginia's private and public world. The book retained the air of the eras through which Virginia lived. The author was very discreet and never intruded on the narrative. Too often biographers are only too willing to contrast an episode just described against a contemporary example of a similar incident,to allow a current reader - with the hindsight of more acquired knowledge and different mores and manners -- to come to satisfying "superior" judgements.Excellent book. Sorry it had to end and saddened the reason for the end was indeed such a sorry one.
