America in Space: Nasa's First Fifty Years

From Publishers Weekly

The most memorable photographs from America's recent explorations of space have been taken by the Hubble space telescope and the Huygens mission to Saturn. But as the editors of this lavishly illustrated coffee-table volume demonstrate, in the early years of the space program, the camera's blinking eye captured human beings. Dick, NASA's chief historian, and his NASA colleagues offer images of the crew-cut young hot rods of the Mercury and Gemini programs before they became household names, along with a young test pilot named Neil Armstrong in 1956 operating a simulator of the X-15 hypersonic aircraft. Photographs capture the grandeur of the mammoth Saturn rockets blasting off, as well as the tragedy of the fire-charred Apollo 1 capsule. NASA's engineers and technicians receive their due, shown putting equipment and astronauts through their paces. In the post-Apollo years, the almost forgotten Skylab is memorialized, as well as missions to build the International Space Station and the space shuttle program. The book concludes with pictures of the outer reaches of the solar system and stunning vistas light-years away. NASA staff have annotated the photographs with informative miniessays documenting the history of the agency and its mission. Space buffs and their children will thrill to these photos. (Oct.) This book is nicely done with a large number of photographs. It primarily covers the manned space program from Mercury to the space shuttle and the international space station. Limited coverage of unmanned vehicles is provided with a focus on the more dramatic programs such as the Mars explorers and the Hubble telescope. The biggest shortcoming, in my mind, is the very limited number of photographs showing the hardware, the delvelopment of which was in many ways the real achievement of NASA. Instead, photographs of the astronauts predominate with many being rather ordinary publicity or training shots. Launch photos are very limited, and in-flight pictures are not as common as I would have liked to have seen. The large format of the book was wasted on too many mundane photographs, when it could have been used to depict more spectacular and interesting subjects. While this book falls short of its potential, it is still worthwile if you have an interest in the U. S. manned space program.

I enjoy space history, and I really enjoy the pictures and text of this book. It's a large book, so the pictures are very enjoyable to look at. The time during the "Space Race" was unique for the United States of America. There were feelings and attitudes at the time that are so different than those of today. Because of that, the book offers an interesting perspective on life in America during that time. So many people weren't alive during these times, this book will help them understand much more clearly how things were.

This book is huge, look at the dimensions before you buy (14.5 x 11.2 x 1.4 inches), when it's open it takes over 22 inchs of desk or lap space. It's mostly high quality color pictures and very little text. I grew up during the start of the US space program and find most of the early pictures fascinating. The book is sectioned off by different space programs beginning with project Mercury and ends with our current programs. Other non-space programs that were required for the run-up to Mercury are covered as well. I wish there was more written about each of the different space programs. It's a good buy if you have the room for it.

A large coffee table book containing the most comprehensive black-and-white and color photographic collection of the history of NASA I have every read. Many large unique photographs offering first hand insight of the people and equipment that put man in space. Too heavy for casual night time reading but a great photographic reference book for all ages. Very well organized with chapters from pre-NASA high speed flight testing to the Shuttle program. Highly recommended for those that wish to understand the history of the American manned space flight program.

This book is huge and pretty expensive. It is not for the casual reader. It is so big you have to set it on a table to look at it. Some of the pictures are classics, that you will be familiar with. But many are rare shots that you do not see often, if at all. My father worked for the space program back in the 1960's and he loves this book.

Gorgeous book! Bought for a 10 year old and he enjoys it immensely. Vivid, large full color pictures. Very thorough!

It's a big book, a perfect gift for people liking space or just to show them how cool it is.It's full of really big and nice pictures and some explanations. It will remotivate immediately any student who is wondering why he took aerospace engineering and the bunch of equations that go with it.

As a career senior HR executive with a major pharmaceutical company and, currently, entrepreneur having conceived, launched and scaled a successful & comprehensive human capital development, talent management and leadership, team and organizational development firm, I LOVE THIS BOOK! In my opinion, the biggest constraint to what the authors define as three imperatives to a winning talent playbook, will be the lack of HR strategic capabilities. I appreciate all the letters showcased behind many HR professional's names these days (e.g., PHR, SPHR, etc.) however, these credentials are essentially impractIcal and obsolete when it comes to driving early stage, emerging mid-market or Fortune business financial success. For the proven business partner and vetted HR executive contributor (as measured by EBITDA), congratulations on an abundance of career opportunities as you share the reins with the CEO, CFO - as CHRO - in making a significant impact.

Ram Charan is most important management writer since Peter F. Drucker. In this work he teams with two world-class business leaders, Dominic Barton and Dennis Carey to provide CEOs, CFO and CHROs a clear road map to optimizing individual and organizational performance by creating a new leadership team the call the G-3, composed of the above individuals integrate the quantitative and qualitative components to identify the "Top 2%" performers throughout the organization and how to recruit more top 2%ers from external resources. At the same time, the authors show how the role of the CHRO can be elevated as a permanent member of the C-Suite. Along with Thomas McGuire's "Talent Valuation", I have selected this book as a text for my Talent Management course at a local university.

What a great book ! I've been thinking about how HR is never put into it's proper perspective in many facets of a business and this book tells it like it is. It's a world that rewards the best companies that have the best employees. So if you are not putting your thoughts into how you can develop or recruit the best people, you are behind the curve, BIG TIME. This book certainly is appropriate for bigger companies but you can apply the overall themes to any size business. You may be the whole C-suite, but this CHRO hat you wear is very important too. Great stuff !

Excellent book. Developing and investing in talent is a challenge for all organizations.

I had high expectations for this book. I was underwhelmed l.

What a great perspective on the most powerful asset in any organization. It’s People. Well done Ram!!!! Keep the talent mission alive.

Practical approach, cutting-edge, it will be part of my HR classes in the UDLA in Ecuador

Very aspirational and practical at the same time. This book is clearly laid out with plenty of case studies to refer to.
