This ebook is short and concise. At first I didn't think I'd like knowing the answer to the question before I read the question. But, it turns out that I read only the question and then the answer. I don't have to fumble with reading all of the answers and making a "guess". I found that I'm remembering the material much faster than I was with a regular book I was using. I read through the ebook, go and do a practice quiz, and find I'm retaining the material much better. I would definitely recommend this ebook if you are serious about advancing from "General" to "Extra".

Great inexpensive study guide. Between this and eham.net you should be able to study and upgrade to extra in 30 days no problem.

Perfect study guide

It's OK. Studying something with little plot is tough and there is a load of technical information you need to absorb. It does lay it out pretty well.

Just a repackaged copy of the questions pool that can be freely downloaded from many sites. NO VALUE in preparation. There are some GREAT study guides on the internet but, this is not one of them. SAVE YOUR MONEY

I was expecting more than just a printed copy of the Extra Class exam pool questions. Could have gotten the same thing from multiple online sources for free.

A good study tool.

Its just a reprint of the pool of the exam questions. You can get that online for free.

I loved Designing BSD Rootkits (DBR) by Joseph Kong, and I'm not even a kernel hacker. Rather, I'm an incident responder and FreeBSD administrator. This book is directly on target and does not waste the reader's time. If you understand C and want to learn how to manipulate the FreeBSD kernel, Designing BSD Rootkits is for you. Peer into the depths of a powerful operating system and bend it to your will!DBR covers much of the same sorts of material found in the earlier Rootkits: Subverting the Windows Kernel by Greg Hoglund and James Butler, except Kong's book is all about FreeBSD. I actually read the Windows text first, but found Kong's more direct language and examples easier than the Hoglund/Butler text. After reading DBR I have a stronger understanding of each of the main chapters' techniques, i.e., kernel modules, hooking, direct kernel object manipulation, kernel object hooking, run-time kernel memory patching, and detection mechanisms. I particularly liked the author showing his sample rootkit's effectiveness against Tripwire, simply to demonstrate his methods.DBR follows another tenet of great books: it credits previous work. Several times in the text Kong says where he learned a technique or what code he's modifying to do his bidding. This should serve as an example to other technical authors. Kong also does not treat his subject matter as a dark art practiced by people in long black coats at Def Con. He is professional and mentions where certain techniques like run-time kernel memory patching are used by commercial operating systems for "hot patching," as happens with Windows.I have nothing bad to say about this book, although to get the absolute full learning experience it helps to know C programming, some assembly, and FreeBSD kernel internals. The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System by McKusick and Neville-Neil (another excellent book) is helpful preparatory reading. The fact that Kong provided all of his source code for download is also very much appreciated. Bravo! I look forward to your next book.

--- DISCLAIMER: This is a requested review by No Starch Press, however any opinions expressed within the review are my personal ones. ---This enjoyable readable book gradually and very systematically evolves around hacking the kernel of a BSD system.Chapter 1: Loadable Kernel Modules 22p.Chapter 2: Hooking 13p.Chapter 3: Direct Kernel Object Manipulation 20p.Chapter 4: Kernel Object Hooking 4p.Chapter 5: Run-Time Kernel Memory Patching 27p.Chapter 6: Putting It All Together 26p.Chapter 7: Detection 8p.Its written in a style that allows also non-developers to grasp the main procedures and steps involved for modifying a systems kernel (assuming the attacker got access to a privileged system account).Chapters 1 to 5 explain the several methods for modifying the kernel. While the book is divided into 7 chapters, its most value really is the Chapters 6 which has many of those WoW effects included. All or most technics described of chapters 1-5 will be used in chapter 6 for show casing how to circumvent an HIDS. Here is where all learned technics finally come all together. So the reader dabbles with the author from an initial "simple" idea of bypassing an HIDS from one issue to the next. First the system call is hooked, so technically its kind of working, but then we realize that in order to make it perfect we need to hide the just created file (which contains the execution redirection routine). So the next obvious step is to hide the file so we dont leave a footprint on the system, just to realize that we need to hide the KLD (Dynamic Kernel Linker). So now everything is hidden but we forgot about the change of the /sbin directories access/ modification and change time, so we have to go after that too...Its technically very interesting to learn how the author approaches the issues involved in order to avoid being detected by the HIDS or commands the user might use. That the author is technically on top of things is also shown f.e. by some info included in the book which is already referring to FreeBSD 7.To get the most out of the book you ideally have programming knowledge of C, assembly etc. and debugging software systems. So I think its most valuable to system administrators, developers and security consultants.

This would be a 5-star book, if not for the fact that it uses AT&T syntax for ASM. Now, I get that *nix uses AT&T by default, but it is, in my not so humble opinion, stupid. Pretty much any tool you would ever want to use has the option of using Intel syntax, which is much more readable, and easier to understand. Simply put, AT&T syntax is the thing that should not be. Honestly, I don't think I've ever met an ASM dev, reverse engineer, or anyone else who prefers AT&T, and the author's decision to use said syntax seems to me like some kind of twisted torture method, akin to waterboarding a man with orange juice, immediately after he brushes his teeth.@biebsmalwareguy

What's Going on Down There?: A Boy's Guide to Growing Up, by Karen Gravelle Nick Castro

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-10-The author of The Period Book (Walker, 1996) teams up with two teenage consultants to provide a useful and readable guide to puberty for boys. Written in the voice of a trusted adult, this title deftly covers physical changes, sexual intercourse, peer pressure, and pregnancy and birth. Gravelle reassures readers that there are a lot of different ways to describe normal when discussing puberty, and that each person will experience changes on his own timetable. The book balances information about being a sexual person with that of being a responsible person. While providing detailed and accurate information on genital size, birth-control devices, and sexually transmitted diseases, there is also an emphasis on the psychological changes occurring at the same time. Homosexuality and bisexuality are covered in a frank and open manner. The chapter "Girls Are Changing Too" discusses changes readers can expect to see in their female friends and has detailed illustrations and information not typically presented in books for males. The text is complemented by comic-book style illustrations that serve to lighten the sometimes serious subject matter.Katie O'Dell Madison, Multnomah County Library, Portland, ORCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I realize this book was published in 1998, and I thought it might be a bit dated, but bought it to read with my son because it seemed thorough and included a section on STDs. Overall, it's a well written book with lots of good, accurate, morally neutral information. However, Chapter 10, entitled "If I'd Known Then What I Know Now!" contains quotes from men such as the following: "Don: I wish I'd known I could have been a lot more aggressive with girls - but I don't want any of my daughter's friends to hear that!" and "Larry: If I could live my life over, I'd like to have the ability to really figure females out. I've learned that what they say isn't always what they mean." Aaaahhh!! No, no, no! This is a book about sex!! It is not OK to be more aggressive with girls! NO MEANS NO!! There needs to be a revised edition with a section on consent!!! While it may be true that people (and not only females!) don't always say what they mean, NO MEANS NO, and furthermore, failure to say NO does not imply consent!!

This book is really not for younger adolescents. My son is 12 and after I previewed this book, I didn't feel he was ready for it. I did photocopy the first three chapters. Most of it seemed more appropriate for high schoolers. There was one very odd situation mentioned, where a boy asks if masterbating with his male cousin means he is gay? The book then goes on to say it is normal for boys to do this together. I strongly disagree and will share photos from the book.

This book is age appropriate for a high schooler! It talks very little about basic facts regarding physical changes, yet talks extensively about sex. This will not help your child understand why they are growing hair or other physical changes. It will just encourage them(as if they would ever need it!!!) to experiment with sex.I'm seriously disappointed and fairly disturbed amthat this is geared toward such a young age.

This book is awesome!!! My son is getting ready to go to middle school and with that said I felt that I needed to get ahead of what all of his school mates may share and expose him to. This book covers EVERYTHING. Including explaining what the changes that they may be noticing in girls and why. Which at first I was a little taken aback, but I would never want my son to embarass a girl who may have had an accident. So, with that said . . . I have recommened this book to any and all of my friends and fellow Moms who have a sone that is also on his way to Middle School. I would also like to add that the way the book is written is very relatable for a tween. I love that author worked with 2 Middle School aged boys and of course doctor(s) to write the book. It's not a clinical/encyclopedia delivery of information. I highly recommend this book!

Fantastic perspective for boys aged 11-13. It helps take the uncomfortableness out of the discussion while exploring most everything a boy would need to know correctly, instead of from the locker room. Some parts were a little more detailed than most 11 year olds need but we used that as a great topic starting point. I would strongly advice the parent read it before the child so you can decide what you want them to know and so you can openly discuss the topics. It's pretty in-depth and covers everything from hair growth to girl's menstruation to sexuality and life style choices as well as what counts as "sex." My sons found it very helpful and I enjoyed that the conversations afterward were more open.

A fun and funny way to "tell" your son some of the things you just can't say to him. I did look through the book first and write in a few things that my husband and I believe and want him to know. We try to always be open to questions but sometimes when the kids want to bring up gross stuff in the middle of dinner it's nice to just say, "You can look at your book later dear."

This is a good resource for boys entering puberty. My son just turned 11, and whether I'm ready for this or not, his body is starting to change. I of course am happy and willing to answer any questions he has, but this book gives him a way to find things out without needing to speak directly to me about embarrassing issues. I bought it for him along with another less specific book (the body book for boys by rebecca paley) and just put them on his bed. When he found out about it, he spent the next hour reading by himself. I asked later which book he liked better and this was the winner by far. It simply has the information he wants in a way he can easily understand. I also want to add that the mentions of bondage or S&M are total misrepresentations of what is in this book. There is an illustration of a boy on a rack (the torture device) being stretched, and a person in an executioner's type hood beside him, and the boy is saying "more! more!" Okay, if you are flipping through this book, you might see this drawing and imagine that it's demonstration some bizarre sex act. However, if you actually READ the page, it's a kid who is shorter than his friends and wants to grow! Jeez people, read before you judge. It's a good, clear book. It tells information without judgement in a clear and direct way. It does go into detail... which is what the kids want to know. Knowledge is power.

If you a professional in any career, this should be a must read. Could almost be call losing ourselves to the numbers. Too many professionals have lost who they are and why they are, because of justification for their job. When people we serve are turned into a number because of the dollar. Then our humanity for them becomes lost. If you can’t see this in your work, this book will help you pull the sheets back to see this. Who do you serve the people or the dollar?

It's an easy book, with some basic, usable ideas about wisdom - which isn't discussed or defined though! It contains many cases, elaboratedly described, but still somewhat artificially. From the point of view of management its naive since it only discuss and criticise rules and incentives as the two culprits of management; og the cases are often somehow extreme, which leaves you a bit barehanded when it comes to more complex cases. It's easy read - and still worth the time spend.

I didn't know how much I wanted to know everything written in this book. Yeah, Aristotle! Thanks so much Schwartz and Sharpe for making wisdom a little more accessible.

Really fantastic book and overall easy read. Not generally a big book person, but really liked this. I am now using it as a "book club" book with friends as well as my students.

got here in time for class. Three cheers! and its a good read.

Practical Wisdom accomplishes something very subtle that many of the reviewers on here seem to have missed. It presents a moral lens through which we might view American institutional breakdown. And because it is a lens we don't usually look through, it is paradigm shifting. What the mediocre reviews suggest is that the institutional breakdown has been covered by others and that the authors can't hang with academic moral philosophers. But these reviewers have clearly missed the point. At the heart of the book is an application of Aristotelian ethics to an analysis of what has gone wrong with a set of core professions - law, medicine, teaching, and banking. Aristotle argued that ethics is not something we learn in a book somewhere and then go out and apply. Rather ethics is an everyday practice of learning to do the right thing, in the right way, at the right time, and in the right amounts. It involves balancing and optimizing multiple different and often conflicting goals. When our friend asks if we like her new hair cut, we want to be empathic and honest, we want her to look good and feel appreciated. And it takes practical wisdom to know the right thing to say, in the right way, at the right time. And it is like this with everything we do in life. The presentation of this material thus far is solid and lucid, though far from groundbreaking. The problem is that we have neglected practical wisdom and instead focused on rules and incentives. Something has gone dreadfully wrong in our ability to read situations and to know how to act. It is as if we no longer trust ourselves and one another and can think of no better way of moderating our behavior than to regulate it with policies. This is a groundbreaking application of Aristotelian ethics to institutional breakdown. The problem, they are saying, is not too much government or a lack of the right programs but the way we behave. But what they have to say about our behavior is completely different from anything you will find in most personal development and spiritual books. Yet, it is easy to imagine at this stage that we are dealing with yet another libertarian railing against rules. But while the authors do not take positions on the political spectrum, this is far from another libertarian rant about regulations. What is unique here is the answer they provide to institutional collapse: we need to provide the space for people to more fully engage their work, and the people working need to engage it in the right way. They need to recognize the ethos of their profession, the purpose, or perhaps we could say the mission. They need to recognize the various values and goals they seek to accomplish. And they need to develop the capacity to see which values and goals are appropriate for the circumstances. This can be accomplished through experience. It cannot be learned in a book and it cannot be fostered through incentives, though some policies will do a better job of creating space for this wisdom to be practiced and for it to arise. Rather, through experience we learn to recognize patterns, and in seeing a pattern that we recognize, given sufficient conscious experience, we will know what to do. For life is vastly more complex than textbook moral dilemmas. The book highlights the hollowness of a variety of institutions, covering all of the major professions. And while I have seen analyses of each of them, few authors have taken on all of them at once. So this is more comprehensive than yet another analysis of the health care system or the finance industry. And because it is a comprehensive institutional critique, it could also be said to be a cultural critique. And while many authors, stretching deep into American history, have explored American shallowness and glibness, a lack of the capacity to see nuances and to do what is most fitting, I am aware of no one who has matched such a critique with an ethical answer. If these are the problems of the American character and American institutions, then there is an ethical practice that can transform our institutions, transform our culture, and transform ourselves. That practice is practical wisdom. This goes straight to the heart of what has long been ailing America and provides an answer that is difficult to reject. If many of the reviewers seem to have missed the point, this may because they themselves lack an eye for what is fitting. It is a subtle answer, and while the examples are abundant, it would be easy for the reader to collapse their answer into just a critique of institutional breakdown or a simple self help book. It is neither and so much more. Now those who have read the book may notice that I added a little. The authors do not mention a deep critique of the America character, and perhaps if they did, the controversy would have sold more books. Nor do they discuss much about more recent developments that have driven our turn toward rules and regulations. Answers might range from information overload to increasing levels of diversity to increases in human freedom to the breakdown in social norms. There are answers for all of these challenges, but as far as I am aware, no one has provided practical wisdom as the answer. In a personal interview with Barry Schwartz, he appeared to concur with my suggestion that these were some of the causes behind the shift. And perhaps the book would have grabbed more of us by the shirt collar if the authors had mentioned these things. American society at the dawn of the twenty-first century is radically complex, and we are still struggling with how to manage that complexity. My criticism of the book is unusual in that I don't think the authors went far enough in applying their own framework. In other words, I think they are able to answer more problems than they seem to recognize. Take cultural diversity. One school of thought says we need to be more sensitive to difference. Another school of thought says we need to integrate cultural difference into a wider set of shared norms. But while Practical Wisdom does not touch on the issue, it provides an answer. What we need to do with difference is engage it, and through continually engaging our human differences, we will begin to see what sort of engagement is the right kind at the right time. Through engaging differences in this way, we might develop new norms of human interaction. This is how we make a Boston or New York or San Francisco work. Or take environmental ethics. The last few decades have seen a massive increase in the number of beings and things we need to take into ethical consideration: how we travel, where we drive, what we eat. To those of us who take animal suffering or greenhouse gas emissions seriously, the burden of ethical commitments can become unbearable. Most just try to throw off the burden by making glib remarks about vegetarians or treating climate change as a hoax. But Practical Wisdom provides a framework through which we might optimize the application of this mountain of commitments. Vegetarians could do far more good if they learned the right way to engage their concern for animals, in the right amounts, at the right, all the while paying attention to the right times for personal and the right times for political change. The book also pulls the rug out from libertarian conservatism. For they may be reacting to the exact same things that the authors identify as being problematic, but their answer lacks compassion, is divisive, and may not actually accomplish what they want. The authors could have been more explicit here and used that challenge to draw attention to their very important arguments. But the book also opens the gates to a third way in American politics. Call it the civil sphere. Perhaps we as a society could learn to identify institutional problems that are not conducive to policy solutions, either of the minimalist or maximalist kind. Perhaps we could identify areas where there is a need for more space free from regulations. Imagine uniting the teachers unions with contractors, entrepreneurs with liberal legal rights groups, doctors with creative rebels. The agenda would be neither left, nor right, nor center, but entirely new. Any politician who adopted these arguments would find a ready constituency of disengaged swing voters. There is another way the work could be taken further. In the tradition of Aristotle, the authors suggest that practical wisdom cannot be studied but must be learned through experience. But one can imagine creating exercises that speed up the learning process immensely by helping us to identify what it is like to experience practical wisdom within the context of one's profession. Here is what I have in mind. Spend some time identifying and writing up the mission of your work. Then list the goals, values, principles, and objectives you seek to accomplish. Now imagine a challenging scenario of the sort you often confront on the job. Notice how it feels in your body. Now try to imagine what it would feel like if you could accomplish several of your objectives at once. Notice how this feels. Now imagine other similar scenarios, noticing how it feels to get the response right. Do this repeatedly and regularly until it is second sense. Having done such an exercise, a person could much more quickly learn practical wisdom. If the authors failed to include such exercises, perhaps it is because of the groundbreaking nature of the work. This book simply opens a gateway into a whole new way of looking at being in the world and there isn't the space to go into all of the applications. The point of these criticisms is not to say that the book was lacking, but rather that it was so ripe as to require a follow up. Read it and read it well. Perhaps if you read it with practical wisdom, you too will see it to be a masterpiece.

Practical wisdom is a thoughtful, important analysis of how rules and regulations have edged out common sense, reason, intuition, compassion, altruism and initiative, and the subtle and overt damage it does to us individually and collectively. The authors carefully discuss how the legal, medical, financial and educational systems are being impacted by this steady erosion. The information in the book is very depressing, almost alarming.Glimmers of hope (system changers) are applauded throughout, and at the end of the book. I longed for more examples.Practical Wisdom's subtitle "The Right Way to Do the Right Thing" would make a fabulous main title and subject for a much needed follow up book. I want so badly to read page after page about various system changers and what they are doing to lift themselves and others out of the rampant and insidious demoralization that Practical Wisdom has brought to light.Surely there is enough material out there to fill a book. I really, really hope so.

Horribly misrepresentation of the human brain. Medical doctors and neuroscientists clearly state there is no foundation for anyone to state how the human brain collects, processes and stores data for recall. Yet, this book and Kenneth Sharpe as an instructor 'claims' with diagrams there is a method and different sources in how the information is received, such as in a story being told verses actually experiencing an event, can make a difference in retention. Yet Sharpe will not discuss in class alternatives for consideration or questioning based on a students actual experience. Nor will he discuss the fault of story telling by second or third parties. Does a primary story teller always explain the event perfectly or correctly? Was the primary story teller watching the event or involved in a specific portion of the event? All too technical for Sharpe. His response; "so-and-so doesn't think like the rest of us." This is an actual quote.
