B.V.Larson can do no wrong, and despite some strong similarities between his Rebel Fleet series and the Undying Mercenaries, "Earth Fleet" is one of the best space operas you will read this year. Blake, like McGill of the other series, operates in a universe filled with stronger alien empires but who are susceptible to the cunning that humans have had to develop to survive on Earth (thanks, Charles Darwin!). Imperials, Rebel Kher, Godwin are each interesting and distinct, and the perils that Blake falls into and out of are wonderfully complicated.Undying Mercenaries unabashedly displays its tongue in cheek, while Rebel Fleet uses humor more sparingly, but the brains over brawn theme is prominent in both. The former is by now a longer series and has lost some of its earlier freshness, so if you are going to start one or the other, I recommend diving into the Rebel Fleet.
Written with little mind paid to flowery exposition, complex world building, and heady sci-fi high concepts, these books are all about action - the kind you find in classic Star Trek episodes. And it works. Earth and it's little fleet the underdogs constantly facing imminent annihilation at the hands of violent aliens with superior technology and firepower. Yet they constantly underestimate the ever resourceful humans who, with a bit of luck, daring and deception always somehow manage to turn the table on their attackers and send them packing. It's hard not to love this kind of space military melodrama with a gung-ho hero who by using his wits is constantly able to pull victory from the jaws of death and defeat.
It's so refreshing to read a book about a decisive confident man who captures our hearts and imagination with funny and creative stories about solving problems on a galactic scale. I hope the author doesn't keep us in suspense and make us wait as long between books like he did this one. Great plot, great story and I hope the imperials visit again!
I have enjoyed this series (especially books 1 and 2). Book three was a good follow up, but book four disappointed me! I was hoping for more Leo Blake interaction with the rebel fleet. This book was much more about Leo Blake fighting part of the rebel fleet as an Earth Representative. As such, this 4th book really didn't highlight Blake's many talents, as did the first 3 books. Hoping for more humans in the rebel fleet storyline!
So I liked this story and it would have been hard to read this as a stand alone novel (Highly recommend getting the first 3 books and reading them in order). The only real criticisms I have for this book is that it took a little bit of time for the story to get going and was very short in comparison to the first book. Which means that now I have at minimum a 6 moth long wait for the next book to come out.(Grumbles, impatiently exercising patience). HOWEVER, the action was fast paced and developed well, kept me guessing a while at the end.
This book has it all! The normal jokes, the bull, the crazy battles and finally earth actually gets hurt. This is the part I was waiting for, I always found it hard to believe earth keeps getting into interstellar fights without civilian casualties, well that's all over.Read and enjoy, another great read by Larson and the story gets a deeper darker tone.
Loved the series of Fleet books! One exciting adventure to the next adventure. I would love to read more exciting books about Leo Blake. Keep writing!
