But, I found it invaluable for the understanding it provides of the entire mechanization of movement as it is developed within us or the lack there of and how to reclaim what we may have missed along the developmental pathway or deficiencies we may have acquired due to injuries along the way as well. The reading is not light, but I found it totally fascinating and applicable and in applying the exercises in the way she prescribes actually experienced changes in the way I think and move in the world, and came to a much deeper understanding of the relationship of conciousness and how it is intrically woven and relates to our physical form and the movements our bodies or capable of making and intrically designed to produce. There is no separation. The way we were allowed to move or not as children sets patterns that we incorporate in the way we act and react to our inner and outer enviornment. Powerful book. I will never look at the body or movement in the same way again and that is a good thing.

This is an outstanding work, which, when published, was prescient of the connectivity we glibly call "mind-body". It's more relevant than ever today. Ms Hackney studied extensively with people in the forefront of somatic work bridging the aesthetic (dance), scientific, and therapeutic worlds, all of which drive the now burgeoning consciousness movement. Her language is precise, furthering literacy in the fields of anatomy and kinesiology, and includes detailed and remarkably clear descriptions of movement exercises that illuminate the concepts, structures, and functions of the body. There is also a warm and personable writing 'voice' here, which speaks to the depth of her knowledge, which is above all experiential. This is not a dry, plodding textbook; it's alive with experience and knowledge. Ms Hackney makes the subtle connections of the sentient body accessible to growing generations of movers, dancers, and anyone who seeks to live fully and gracefully. I study integration in Tai Chi and found this book full of good information to supplement my knowledge, I also do body work and this will be helpfull in that also. I would like to see the author do a workbook without the ancedotes and have larger pages and with pictures as an aid. I will possibly do a later review as I am still mastering the material, Northern Wu Tai Chi could add some integration ideas which I may detail later as I am not prepared at the moment. I bought this book taking a chance and was happily rewarded. I am adding some information to this review, for those interested in body integration from an eastern point of view, the core of Tai Chi I recommend "Warriors of Stillness" by Jan Depiersloot.

This is a very well written, incredibly intelligent book on Bartenieff fundamentals, I trained & was certified under Irmgard Bartenieff many years ago, and to me this is the most in depth and comprehensive book available on her Fundamentals. In addition, Ms Hackney has a gift for making things very understandable, which is the mark of a good teacher. Thank You, Rose Mitchell

This book contains absolutely great information. Glad to have found this book. It opened my mind wider than ever before to early childhood developmental patterns and our innate ability to reconnect to them. The editing of the entire book leaves too much to get lost in translation. Some strong nods towards relating it to what is going on anatomically, but purposely stops short on the scientific end.

WOODSIDE by Mary Kingswood is the grand finale in her five-book series, “The Sisters of Woodside Mysteries.” I read the book as a free pre-release offer, although I had already purchased and paid for a pre-order copy through Amazon. It was worth it to me— rarely have I enjoyed a series so much or been so anxious to find out how it all ended! Actually, rarely have I enjoyed the individual novels in a series so much. Each was superb.However, please consider reading the previous books in the series before tackling WOODSIDE. There has been such a lot going on in this family! Not having each of the sisters’ stories in mind will definitely make it more difficult to appreciate the nuances of this complex and intriguing story.If you have read anything of the book’s blurb, the family has long mourned, but has come to accept, their brother Jeremy’s untimely death as a child after he was sent to the Navy by his father. But when a young man arrives at Woodside, asking questions of its new owners, old wounds are reopened and new questions begin.To avoid as many spoilers as possible, I can only say that this was an extremely satisfying ending to an extraordinary series. I am in awe of the complex mysteries presented and the equally as complex solutions. It took a magnificent writer to avoid any cliches or easy solutions to this enormous family saga.

This is a wonderful finish to a wonderful series. As soon as I finished my pre-release copy, I started the Sisters of Woodside series again from the beginning. I found the mysteries enthralling. I've also read and reread her other series beginning with "Amy" and went on to the Marford brothers series. I absolutely loved them all. Well done Mary. I am eagerly awaiting the next series.

Throughout the previous "sisters" books, the brother is believed to have been lost at sea. But in Book 5 is where things change. And here is where the story begins. A must read. Ms. Kingswood is an excellent storyteller. I've read the Sons of the Marquess (5 books), and the Sisters of Woodside Mysteries (5 books). But . . . I have a tough time keeping in the story when I stumble over the incorrect pronouns used after "than" or "like." When this happens, I feel like I've been thrown into the 21st Century lingo.

What a wonderful way to end the Woodside series! I enjoyed all of these characters especially Mr Tyrell and his daughter Jane. Charming, romantic, suspenseful and puzzling. I laughed aloud at some of the teasing between Jeremy and Jane. A delight!

First, I need to say that I received a free pre-release copy of this book, which is good because the suspense of anticipating release day was really getting to me. I loved this book, perhaps the best of the series. Tightly written and edited, well developed characters, and a strong story, "Woodside" is the last book in the series, where the lost heir and brother Jeremy is found, and at last puts the remaining pieces of the puzzle together.

Woodside did not disappoint. This was the fifth book in the mystery series and it was a fine finish to the others. Mary Kingswood has become one of my favorite writers. Her characters are well written and intelligent and it's fun to play detective along with them. Highly recommend.

Her recency romance and mystery is excellent. This was a perfect ending for the series with many interesting and unexpected surprises. I will miss the Woodside family but look forward to the Allmont sister's and the upcoming series, Silver Linings.

This was a most satisfying book. The author painted the characters clearly, and the ending was well done in that it did not stop abruptly. The reader got an insight in to the future. I especially commend the scene in the "house" where Jeremy and Jane clarified their feelings--the author painted the picture, good dialog and gracefully ended the moment without disappointment. Just enough romance. Do feel it best to read the other Woodside books first.

He holds many views about the game that would be considered “old-school” and has applied those thoughts to both baseball and life when he has coached youth baseball. These beliefs and what he does with his young players has been communicated in a letter he gives all parents titled the “Matheny Manifesto.” It has become an Internet sensation, but more importantly, it has become a code by which other coaches and parents of youth sports participants would be well to follow.The book has many pieces of advice that nearly everyone involved in youth sports has heard, such as let the kids make mistakes without being overly critical and that the coach is always right, even if he or she is not. There are some topics that might be surprising, especially in today’s specialized youth sports culture. Matheny advises parents to let a kid try all the sports he or she wants to play instead of determining early which one would be “the one.” He also speaks out against the culture of rewarding every participant for being present. On that topic, he simply says that this kind of reinforcement does not prepare the child for the inevitable failure that he or she will face in real life.Matheny also talks about his faith in one chapter, but does not preach nor expect anyone else to also wear his or her faith on the sleeve. Instead, he simply explains how his Christian faith has helped shape his values and I thought this was one of the better written chapters in the book. His account of his playing and managing career in the major leagues was also very good and it tied in nicely with the points he was trying to make regarding youth sports.This book is one that should be read by anyone involved in youth sports, no matter the role. If the reader just wants to read certain parts for reference or review, this format makes that easier as well.

In his book, The Matheny Manifesto, Mike Matheny shares his thoughts on coaching baseball. I’ve coached youth softball for a few years, and have a few years to go. From that aspect I found this book outstanding. But, more importantly I think, it is just as good from the perspective of a parent, regardless of whether that parent has ever coached anything.Mr. Matheny’s own parents and coaches believed that character is more important than winning. And he, in turn, wants to pass that on to those he coaches, whether they are on his youth baseball team or in the major leagues:“Our role as coaches is not just to build up the scoreboard but also to build up our players so that they become character-filled leaders who will have an impact on those around them.”Matheny writes a lot about his own baseball career. His book goes back and forth between sports biography and coaching philosophy. To me, his most interesting stories are from his days at home, when he and his brothers played outside until after dark. (His dad put lights up in the yard so they could keep on even after the sun when down.) Least interesting are the stories from the major leagues. But all of the stories get back to the same theme: instilling values through sports.What I most appreciate is the straightforward advice to parents, advice which Matheny reinforces with stories of the kind of dad his own father was:“My dad would put in long hours operating heavy machinery….He’d come home covered with dirt, and you could tell all he wanted to do was get cleaned up and relax. But he would always grab a glove and go play catch with me and my brother or throw batting practice for us. He never turned us down.”Matheny’s number one piece of advice to parents who want their kids to excel is to just go out and throw the ball with them:“To develop skills, the younger player needs repetition. For life in general, he needs time with his parents. It’s a win-win.”It’s not just a win-win for the player. The parent, while spending time with their kids and teaching, has a great excuse to play and have fun, something which most of us need more of.Matheny writes a lot about his Christian faith and how it has influenced him in life and coaching. There’s more gospel in this book than many books that are marketed as Christian books.I’m glad I read The Matheny Manifesto just before our own youth softball and baseball leagues get started for the year. I plan to take Matheny’s advice and make it the most productive season my kids have had yet.

Let me start off by saying that I am a true blue Los Angeles Dodgers fan. The St. Louis Cardinals have been a thorn in the Dodger’s side for years. Both organizations are successful and respected. In my life time the Dodgers have faced the Cardinals in the postseason five times, the Dodgers have lost four of the five match ups. Therefore, I know the risk I was running being a Dodger fan, reading a book by the current Cardinal manager, Mike Matheny.All joking aside, I have a lot of respect for the Cardinals. I have a lot of respect for Tony LaRussa and I have read two books about his baseball managing career. Matheny had some big shoes to fill in 2012, when LaRussa led the Cardinals back from their final strike (twice) to win the World Series, but he has succeeded taking the Cardinals to the playoffs each season as manager.When Matheny was chosen as manager of the reigning World Series team, many were puzzled. Matheny had no managerial experience. He was only six years removed from his playing career, which was shut down abruptly by health issues relating to recurring concussion symptoms.But Matheny is strong leader with strong values. Ultimately, The Matheny Manifesto is an account of Matheny’s values that he integrates into his life. The manifesto originated when he was asked to manage youth baseball. Not wanting to be like every other little league coach, Matheny wrote out demands for himself, his staff, his players, and most importantly, the parents. He wanted to create a team of character. He wanted to create a team known for integrity and hard work. He did not care about winning. Winning happens when you do everything right.This is a great book. It should be required reading for anyone thinking about coach youth sports.
