Gardening for a Lifetime: How to Garden Wiser as You Grow Older, by Sydney Eddison

From Booklist

A respected, beloved writer and speaker in the gardening world, Eddison shares her personal transition from dynamic garden maker to an aging garden caretaker. Revealing strategies she developed to reduce the workload inherent in maintaining perennial borders, Eddison presents a bullet-point list of “gleanings” to accompany each chapter. Determining which perennials merit a place while removing others is one option she explores. Gardeners who are no longer young will appreciate her recommendations for choosing shrubs that require less care, or plants that thrive in shade rather than sun. Making task lists might sound elemental, but Eddison explains the importance and effectiveness of such lists. And she suggests ways to search for help when one needs to spend less time maintaining one’s garden, a decision that can be difficult for type A gardeners as they grow older. Eddison’s thoughtful reflections are timely for countless gardeners who are approaching the time in their lives when a garden sanctuary can feel like a burden. --Alice Joyce

This is such an honest little handbook for the overwhelmed gardener. We don't always have the time, good health, or energy for gardening responsibilities, but we keep bringing in more of everything and with each comes more tasks. I've been wondering for quite some time if I've bitten off more than I can chew in my current garden. The author has gone through the same process and helps us make our gardens appropriate for our current (and future) needs. When do we have enough trees, shrubs, and plants? How do we know if we have too much and what do we do about it? This book addresses in general and very specific ways to control what goes in, or stays in, our gardens, so we can continue to enjoy them without being overwhelmed. After reading this book, a weight lifted off my shoulders, because she recommends that for certain tasks we get help, as much help as we can afford. Whew! I had felt so guilty not to be able to do it all. After all, it's my garden! The best part of it is, she talks about her various helpers over the years and their different approaches and what she has learned from each of them. I love this quote about one of her helpers, "she knew how to hit the high spots and keep us up to speed." The author is a garden perfectionist, which isn't always the best strategy for gardening. One very simple example is how she has learned to use lists, a practical idea for me. "When you feel overwhelmed by all the things that cry out to be done in the garden, making a list can be useful." Actually, she has several lists, including a daily list, which she tells us to keep short because we have too many other obligations already, and a master list, which we can chomp off items on as we have time, rather than stand around in the garden wondering what we could get done in the 30 minutes we have available today. Great idea. Her solutions are practical, and that's what I need in my life. The fact that the author is a perfectionist began to work against her over time. She kept expanding her garden, but expected to be able to keep it at the same standards she had when it was smaller. That didn't work for her, so she learned how to bring her garden dreams into line with the "realities" of her life. She eventually came to the conclusion that something had to go. That's the meat of this book, the process she goes through to decide what, when, and how to start simplifying. For example, she says, "The greater the variety of perennials you grow, the more work your border will entail...each one demands something---staking, deadheading, cutting back, or division, either to ensure good flower production or to restrain its spread." She also teaches us that if we have one genus or species monopolizing our time and dominating our garden, we need to think about reducing its number. Then she gives the standards a perennial must meet in order for it to remain, or be added to, her garden as it fits her life right now. She gives specifics, which is very helpful! One of my favorite and possibly the most helpful to me is, "...it was cheaper to buy shredded bark mulch by the yard, have it delivered, and hire an able-bodied young man to put it down than for the two of us to spend all summer hauling three-cubic-foot bags around the garden." I think I like that idea. I'll probably save enough money on tools and medical expenses to pay for that extra help.I love the "Pick Your Battles" section as well as the "Accepting Imperfection" chapter. She tells us just what plant categories she has found that practically take care of themselves and helps us explore new and different ways to garden.I have enjoyed this book and will benefit from it as I try to cram way too much into my life. At least I can work intelligently to create a garden that is appropriate for my needs.

I think this is super for any age if one wants to improve "ease of care" of your landscape. I use her principles and they work well, proven by how neighbors and strangers alike love my garden. Better yet I like working in my garden and enjoying its rewards. Very,Very useful for everyone with any plot of ground just about and who wants to have beauty. It is not about minimalism. Almost like a DIY landscape handbook.

This is not a "how to" book as the title suggests, but rather a sharing of personal experience. While I enjoyed reading it, it was more from "fellow feeling" - it is long on the perspective of the aging gardener but short on practical advice and strategies. I enjoy Sydney's writing but I was looking for more ideas to expand on my current strategies (yoga, Pilates, ergonomic tools, an occasional glass of wine, etc.). Since book titles are often up to the publisher, I'm not laying any blame on the author, but be forewarned if "how to" is what you are looking for.

There may be other gardening books out there that have more to say... But I'm an aging gardener and I loved the pace, wisdom and story-line this book offers. It's not just a gardening book, it's like sitting with a wise and fun-loving sage who just happens to know a lot about gardening and life. Meeting her husband in the story line and experiencing her loss, as many of us have done as we age, gives me hope that life continues to blossom, even after the winter-of-our-lives. Gardens change and so do we. Once a bright playful meadow slowly creeps back allowing the woodland take over. May our own evolution be so graceful. And as hopeful. We don't have to stop gardening, we just have to remember where we are in life's cycle, and -- be honest with ourselves.

This is a perfect fit for a retiree who loves to garden, but needs ideas to help simplify maintence and upkeep. Fifteen years ago the lot we purchased was bare, now we have forty plus trees, numerous shrubs, perennials in both shade and sun gardens, and a 20 X 20 vegetable garden. Having been retired five years, and having gone through a knee replacement I knew it was time to simplify, but I couldn't bring myself to get rid of anything. This author gives lots of examples on how to eliminate plants that are high maintence, suggestions for shrubs and trees that need little to no pruning, and ways to ease achy joints by making garden chores less time consuming. I saw her book suggested in the newspaper, and knew it was the perfect book for me at the time. I was concerned as to whether or not I could continue gardening. This summer we have applied many of Sydney Eddison's ideas and have redesigned beds, decreased overgrown shrubs, and eliminated troublesome perennials. This book was the right read at the right time. All retirees who love to garden should own this book.

A friend of 40+ years has crossed the big seven-oh line. Her green thumb reaches all the way to her shoulder but even she is slowing down a bit in the garden. This book is perfect for her...so perfect, in fact, that I gave it to her in May as her birthday-in-August gift! She loves it! If you've got an older gardener around the house, or if one stares out of the mirror at you as you brush your teeth (how DID that old woman get in there?), this is the book for you!

I thought this was going to be helpful, but it's mostly charming ramblings about the wealthy East coast writer's life, as it related to her garden. Don't waste your money, get it at the library if you must read it. I didn't even finish it, I'm sad to say.
