About the Author

MARK OWEN, author of No Easy Day and No Hero, is a former member of the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group, commonly known as SEAL Team Six. In his many years as a Navy SEAL, he has participated in hundreds of missions around the globe, including the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips in the Indian Ocean in 2009. Owen was a team leader on Operation Neptune Spear in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on May 1, 2011, which resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden. Owen was one of the first men through the door on the third floor of the terrorist mastermind's hideout, where he witnessed Bin Laden's death. KEVIN MAURER has covered special operations forces for nine years. He has been embedded with the Special Forces in Afghanistan six times, spent a month in 2006 with special operations units in east Africa, and has embedded with U.S. forces in Iraq and Haiti. He is the author of four books, including several about special operations.

"No Hero" goes into Mark Owen's account of the main lessons he learned by being a Navy SEAL. Recommended by a book club I follow, I started reading it on a whim and got distracted by Thanksgiving, but could not wait to continue. Finished it the next week.The lessons he learns throughout his training are transferrable to the civilian world: focusing on what you can control, attention to detail during stress, and compartmentalization. In this day and age, too many people are concerned with what they can't control (celebrity marriages) instead of what they can control (health) and/or have a say in (politics). Reading this book reinforces what I read from 7 Habits, but by living through his assignments vicariously, it spurs me to actually ACT on the knowledge. Acquisition of knowledge is not as important as the application of knowledge.You can't be an effective SEAL for a decade without applying what you learn. What makes being an effective civilian any different?

"No Hero" is refreshingly self-effacing. This is the story of a SEAL who's afraid of heights and who doesn't like the water. His account of getting stuck and freaking out while rappelling high on a rock precipice is funny as hell. I'm sure I will always remember the advice he got from his ex-con instructor high up on that cliff -- about staying in a three-foot world -- and it already has come in handy.This book has a contemplative and fearlessly veracious writer at the helm. It opens not with SEAL team derring-do, but with two SEALs sitting in the dark on a backyard deck in Virginia Beach learning by text messages that a dozen of their SEAL buddies were just killed in Afghanistan. The names slowly trickle in on cell phones over the course of the night and a 12-pack.SEAL books tend to be rah-rah stories that depict mythic superheroes, caricatures with no human frailties (Dick Couch books come to mind, but I still read them). And most are written on a high school level. These authors say they're writing to inspire young men, so maybe their books are simplistic by design. But for this adult, the cool guns, exciting maneuvers and the well-known hell of SEAL training are entertaining but ultimately just a fast read with very little to think about.I don't expect SEALs to earn a Pulitzer along with their Silver Stars, but if I were their editor, I would ask them to dig deeper.Owen, on the other hand, goes beyond the firefights, and describes the aftermath -- the nightmare scenario of a cat licking a dead man's blood while a child looks on is just one scene among many of war's cascading horrors. This is a well-written book that stays with you long after you put it down.I very much appreciate that he showed black bars where the military censors redacted sentences, paragraphs and pages. Looks like they took out all references to DEVGRU. Why? I respect more than ever Owen's uncensored "No Easy Day." Who knows what the military would have taken out of that book. In my humble opinion, Owen is an American citizen first and seal second and he had a First Amendment right to give Americans the only written first-person account of this important event in history. And every American has the right to read an unexpurgated account of the capture of the country's No. 1 enemy, particularly after the muddled and differing versions given by the government. I thank Owen for having the courage to write "No Easy Day." I hope his lawyers have asked for support from the ACLU.Looks like Owen has a writing swim buddy in Kevin Maurer, a combat journalist. I just read Maurer's "Gentlemen Bastards: On the Ground in Afghanistan with America's Elite Special Forces," a fascinating description of their day-to-day frustrations.I'm still waiting for the SEAL book that shines a light on darker personal realities such as how SEALs deal with the pain of a constantly abused body. And how it feels to go home to a wife they've only seen for a few weeks scattered over years, a stranger they can't possibly know in any real sense. What about the abuse of alcohol and drugs? We only hear about it when two former SEALs OD in the Seychelles.Meanwhile, "No Hero" is great. Buy it. SEALs including Owen ARE heroes and I'm in awe that they do, at great personal costs, what the rest of us can't and won't do. Any book they write is welcome. We all need to know more about our country's longest war.I'm looking forward to reading more of Owen's books. Dig deep.

Mark Owen delivers again in this satisfying volume, covering a variety of stories from his life in the Teams with pertinent lessons that are applicable to any walk of life.I've read a number of books written by former SEALs, and while they are all good, Owens does a great job of connecting with the average civilian reader and making life in special operations accessible for those of us with no military background. I read No Easy Day before this, and both are comparable reads written in a conversational style that can be finished in a few days. I really felt like he was just telling me stories over a few beers.While I do wish he went into more detail at times, I understand he had some legal hassles after his first book and memoirs such as these tend to be sanitized pretty heavily of all the classified details. You can read between the lines and figure out what was edited, and I thought it was a nice jab at the DoD to leave the blacked-out text in the book, just to give you a sense of how ridiculous some of the censorship is.In my opinion Owen is a stand up guy who wants his stories and the stories of his teammates told right. At no point in his two books is he self-righteous or taking you on an ego-trip; he clearly states he is no better or worse than any other SEAL and he's just giving you his account of his life in the Teams and some of the lessons he learned. I think it's a great motivational book for any young guy considering becoming a SEAL and should be added to your essential reading list of former SEAL literature.

I have enjoyed every chapter of this book, as it showed a clear evolution of a navy SEAL from a tactical and personal aspect (which sometimes reflected an emotional aspect of it), which has been portrayed in an excellent balance. I have learned so many new personal tactics on how to deal with stress, focusing on what you can affect (3-foot world), compartmentalization, and others.The writer sincerely showed us how dedication and hardworking, with willpower and talent can develop a powerful and leading person in one of the best special forces in the world. This alone brings a rush of motivation and drive for a seeking individual...What I have realized missing is input from other individuals. There have been some criticism on the forces leadership, and the rules of engagement, but it was almost all from his aspect. I would have been interested by the leadership's perspective on such topics/issues.I have found this book more appealing than Mark's first book (No Easy Day). If you want to read both books, start with No Easy Day followed by No Hero. But if you want to read only one, then I suggest No Hero.

"The New Yorker will be the magazine which is not edited for the old lady in Dubuque." This now-famous line first appeared in the prospectus Harold Ross wrote for a humor magazine he was hoping to start, and, in fact, epitomized the publication's early years. For, as contributing editor E.B. White once ruefully wrote in response to a query about what kind of submissions were wanted, "I myself have only the vaguest idea what sort of manuscripts The New Yorker wants. I have, however, a pretty clear idea of what it doesn't want." Plenty of books have been written about The New Yorker over the years--many by people who were intimately connected with it. Ben Yagoda's About Town is the first, however, to concentrate on the magazine itself, rather than the personalities who shaped it. In his introduction Yagoda writes: "What I had in mind was a critical and cultural history. It would consider, first, the content of the magazine--how its original form came to be, and how and why it evolved over the years. Second, I would look at the role the New Yorker has played in American cultural life." Yagoda is as good as his word as he takes readers from the founding of the magazine in 1919 up until 1987, the year William Shawn was forcibly retired from his position as editor in chief. An epilogue covers the Robert Gottlieb, Tina Brown, and David Remnick years, but the author considers that with Shawn's departure, the curtain came down on The New Yorker as "a unique and influential institution in our culture." Of course devotees of Harold Ross's brainchild could be expected to eat this book up, but About Town is more than just the story of how a magazine was made. Yagoda provides a window on a lost age--New York in the '20s, '30s, and '40s before the advent of television, when magazines and newspapers were at the center of the nation's cultural and intellectual life. He writes well, evoking the times, the people, and the places with such clarity that Harold Ross himself would have been pleased. And it is to Ross that Yagoda and the reader owe much of About Town, for it seems The New Yorker's founding editor kept meticulous records--as did those with whom he worked. When S.I. Newhouse took control of the magazine in 1985, its editorial files--all 2,500 archival boxes of them--ended up at the New York Public Library. Letters from editors to writers and vice versa, minutes from art meetings, memos, editorial queries, and marked-up manuscripts are the raw materials from which Yagoda shapes his story, and he tells it so well that it often reads like a novel. The section dealing with the magazine's decision to run John Hersey's Hiroshima in its entirety is positively gripping. But perhaps the best thing about About Town--for those readers who, like Alice in Wonderland, demand pictures and conversations in their stories--is the plethora of memorable quotes (and even a few photographs) that bring to life The New Yorker in its heyday. Consider this letter from Vladimir Nabokov concerning a short story the magazine had bought: A man called Ross started to "edit" it, and I wrote to Mrs. White telling her that I could not accept any of those ridiculous and exasperating alterations (odds and ends inserted in order to "link up" ideas and make them clear to the "average reader"). Nothing like it has ever happened to me in my life. Or this snippet from Ross's letter to H.L. Mencken: "We have carried editing to a very high degree of fussiness here, probably to a point approaching the ultimate. I don't know how to get it under control." Lovers of The New Yorker can thank their stars that Harold Ross never did get his fussiness under control. Yagoda begins in 1924, just before the New Yorker's start as a humor journal. Founder Harold Ross's stylistic conservatism, his meticulous editing and his ability to delegate authority helped build up the magazine, creating what Yagoda considers its Golden Age in the late 1930s. Long before David Remnick was a bright and talented schoolboy in River Vale, NJ the New Yorker and its leadership were setting the standard of what good writing should be. It turns out that he is a worthy successor to those editorial giants. H may very well surpass them.

There are two types of writers: those who aspire, no, dream of being published in the "New Yorker", and those who, after several rejections, bitterly deride the very institution they hoped to conquer. I am solidly of the first camp, though give it a few years and I might be a latter-day grouch.The work of Ben Yagoda brings the magazine alive, from the heyday of such luminaries as Thurber and White to the tough war years, right up through the Shawn era and even right up to (for 1999) the present. Through it all, Yagoda examines the many lives who devoted themselves to this literary exercise in humor and good faith. The most compelling character studies, however, are the two main editors throughout the magazine's history, Harold Ross and William Shawn.Ross, who founded the magazine in 1925 and managed it through its first twenty-six years, comes across as a gruff, thoroughly Western man who nonetheless saw the need for a magazine like "The New Yorker", and brought it to being through sheer will and fortitude. He also happened to publish significant works by James Thurber, E.B. White, and J.D. Salinger among others. Shawn, taking the reins after Ross's death in 1951, saw the magazine through 30+ years of challange and triumph, only to be forced out in 1987. Throughout the book, Yagoda makes these men the central focus of his tale, but he includes brief looks at literary and other lights of the twentieth century, some who did get published (like Donald Barthleme, Veronica Geng, and John Updike) and some who didn't (Tom Wolfe, whose scandelous expose on the magazine shook it out of its fuddiness).Overall, the book looks fondly back at the magazine's past, with a hint that it might never reach the same heights of importance it once had. That may very well be, but there's still something to be said for a magazine that is such an institution no one could imagine starting a writing career without considering the possibility of submitting to it."The New Yorker" is still the premier magazine in America, and this book explains why, after almost a century, it still carries the weight it does.

There are at least two ways to view Ben Yagoda's book ABOUT TOWN: 1) as the history of The New Yorker Magazine, how it was conceived and developed and changed over time, and 2) as a social document reflecting its times. The subtitle of the book "and the World it Made" does not seem quite as accurate unless one considers that "world" to be the corporate culture created by the staff led by Ross and Shawn, the two longtime editors who built the magazine. The New Yorker certainly has influenced the world within which it existed along with many other magazines.Harold Ross, the founder and first editor of the magazine, with the help of Katherine and E.B.White, Thurber, Dorothy Parker, and many other fine editors and writers launched the magazine in the 1920s. The sophisticated and literary focus of the magazine soon captured the fancy of New Yorkers. During the hard days of the depression the magazine actually gained subscribers as readers enjoyed the humorous repartee and cartoons that helped them laugh at their troubles. Many new readers learned of the magazine during WWII as it was handed around the barracks. The GI bill produced many educated readers who remembering their wartime contact with the magazine now subscibed to it. Following WWII, the magazine included more and more "social conscience" articles, for example, John Hershey's essay on "Hiroshima."Ross died in the early 1950s, and during the fifties under the editorship of William Shawn, the magazine became relatively banal according to Yagoda who says it appealed to stay-at-home wives who enjoyed articles that reminded them of their college days (among other pieces, Mary McCarthy's tales of her Italian travels were featured). In the 1960s, the magazine once again became more vocal about social issues and the environment.Yagoda says the best years of the magazine came in the 1970s when writers like Woody Allen wrote wonderful wacky pieces and investigative journalists covered the scandals inWashington. Following a downturn in subscriptions in 1980s, the magazine was purchased by a media mogul and William Shawn departed. With Tina Brown's arrival, the magazine metamorphed into a Conde Nast publication. Garrison Keillor's comments about Brown's arrival (as he left) are amusing.Over the years, I have read John Updike, Alice Munro, Jamaica Kincaid, Katherine White, and many of the writers who once wrote for the New Yorker. When I was a child, my mother used to quote Dorothy Parker regularly ("Rivers are damp..."), but I had no idea Parker wrote for The New Yorker until years later (we lived in a rural area and subscribed to the Progressive Farmer!!). When I read Rachel Carson's SILENT SPRING, it changed my life, but I read it in book form when it was first published as a Book of the Month Club selection. I only became aware of The New Yorker magazine when I was in my thirties and a college writing instructor suggested it. Yagoda says many people discovered the magazine when they were students.As a social document, The New Yorker articles very much reflect the times, and to some extent, at least under Ross, the magazine seemed to be ahead of the times. In reading this book, I was reminded of National Public Radio, which seems to be the main innovator in broadcast journalism these days--though I am told there are all sorts of happenings on the Internet. The in-depth news stories, the essays by various knowledgeable citizens, the political commentaries and Garrison Keilor are all comparable to The New Yorker magazine.If you are interested in a snapshot of the 20th Century from an educated New Yorker magazine perspective, or in writing and magazine development in general, you will find much of interest in this book. The tales concerning the origins of many innovative features of the magazine are quite good.Yagoda suggests the magazine pretty much ended with Shawn's departure in the late 1980s. He devotes eight pages at the end of the book to the three editors who followed Shawn. He says the median age of the readership grows older every year (not replacing subscribers) and most of current readership as such is owing to the retention of loyal readers. He quotes some of these readers who no longer actually read the magazine but have not given up their subscriptions. His book goes a long way toward explaining to me why I dropped my subscription a few years ago.

I ordered the book because a grand child participated in a Flat Stanley project a few years back while living in another state. She sent her likeness of Stanley to us so that we could show her different places and have all kinds of adventures together. I had not read the book before. We enjoyed the project and I like the book.

The book came in brand new condition. My daughter is reading it for school in 2nd grade and absolutely loves it. She goes in her room to read instead of watching tv or playing on an ipad. The story is interesting, fun, and at her reading level.

The book is defective, pages are out of sequence or missing. I have ordered several books, this is the first time this has occurred. Unfortunately, I think it is too late to return the book. I must add the story itself is very well written keeps you engaged. My 7 year old grandson enjoyed I very much along with the other Flat Stanley books. They are entertsing and educational.

I read this book to my first grade class, and we completed a Flat Stanley project where the kids mailed "flat" versions of themselves around the world. I work at a Title I school in an urban neighborhood, and many of my kids don't get to travel often. The book got them excited about "traveling the world" with our letters, and the kids learned a lot and had fun at the same time. I am excited to try it again next year!

My son loved this series of books. Always had a hard time finding books that keep his attention. Downloaded these one at a time as he needed reading material for school and he really enjoyed them.

I ordered this book because we received a Flat Stanley in the mail for a school project. I know a lot of schools do this for their K-2nd graders to learn about other areas of the country/world. I thought it would be fun to see where/how he originated. We enjoyed this book and have remembered his beginnings as we have traveled with our Flat Stanley. Great book for kids...they love it!!

It's a good read...kids seem to enjoy the creativity of the story. Boy gets flattened by a bulletin board. Boy goes under doors, through a man hole, into the mail and other adventures! Some of the scenes in the book could have been better developed, but hey, the book is old and still has lots of followers. What's there to complain about?

I had always loved the original version of Flat Stanley, but decided to go ahead and get this new edition to read to my class at Energy Express (a reading enrichment program for children in West Virginia). I knew it would be easier to get a hold of and would be a bit shorter than the original (which I have found didn't always keep the kid's attention for long due to it's length.)I'm pleased with how it's been adapted; I don't think much was changed. The illustrations are also very good.This is a great story and a lot of fun to read with kids. After we read it we all traced each other on big sheets of end roll and and then painted ourselves and cut them out so we could have flat versions of ourselves. The kids loved it!

I was looking forward to this volume greatly, since the French landing in Ireland in 1798 provides history with its only example of a Napoleonic campaign fought in the UK, but Stuart Reid's Armies of the Irish Rebellion 1798 comes up fairly short. While there are useful tidbits of information, they are almost entirely about the Anglo-Irish forces, not the Irish rebels or the French. Indeed, Reid almost misses including the French in the volume at all and is content to fob them off as ineffective. Instead, this volume is primarily about the British Army in Ireland and its associated local troops (Yeomanry, militia, fencibles). Overall, I found this volume too parochial and pro-British, which has appeared in some of Stuart's earlier books on Culloden. The author begins the volume by providing a brief background on the United Irishmen, followed by a 4-5 page campaign chronology (Humbert's landing in Killala gets exactly five sentences here). Afterwards, the author discusses the organization and training of the British Army in Ireland, beginning with the regulars and moving into the lower species, militia, yeomanry and fencibles. Along the way, the author does make some good points, such as that at the start of the war with France in 1793 one-third of the British army was in Ireland. The manner in which Scots and Irish Catholics were recruited for service in Ireland is also interesting, although it doesn't tell us much about the campaign of 1798. However, the biggest disappointment is that the author provides no order of battle for either the campaign as a whole or even battles such as Castlebar. Thus, if you want to find out which units were involved in defeating the French invasion, this volume is nearly useless. The Irish rebels are covered in only six pages and much of the information appears based upon British stereotypes. Are there no Irish historical studies on the rebels, Mr. Reid? Amazingly, the French forces are covered in just two pages of text and much of what appears is poorly researched. First, the author focuses on the so-called Black Legion and the earlier Fishguard expedition, which really had nothing to do with the 1798 landings in Ireland. Second, the author clearly did not use Sarrazin's La Descente des Francais en Irlande 1798, which was re-printed in 1998. Humbert's 2-week campaign in Ireland was doomed, but his victory at Castlebar deserves more than the sentence or two it gets here. Oddly, even General Cornwallis, the victor at Ballinimuck, is virtually ignored. While the author mentions rebel massacres of loyalists, he barely addresses the harsh measures enacted upon the Irish as a result of the '98 (Stuart did the same for the Scottish and the '45). Essentially, this is another one of Reid's volumes on the Eighteenth Century British Army, with a smidgeon about the 1798 campaign worked in.

This book is really amazing. I'm a sucker for new picture books for my 3.5 year old son. I prefer books with at least a subtle message of social awareness. This cat book we read for the first time tonight and my son immediately wanted to read it again. The words are very simple, but there is a story. The phrasing is repetitive, which is nice for my son because he likes to contribute and quickly figured out the pattern, if you can even call it that and recite the story. The illustrations really make the book. During the first reading, it was hard for my son to always see that each depiction was (really, I promise!) the cat. The message here is that a single being appears different depending on the perspective of the viewer. It's a really lovely message for young children done in a brilliant, simple, engaging way. This is one of my new favorites.

I am a retired early childhood art teacher. Every illustration in this book stands alone as a piece of art while serving as a wonderful manual to encourage young minds to enjoy and hone their natural observation skills. The story demonstrates without preaching, the fact that every pair of eyes sees the world in their own different way (even their peers). It may also be your kid's first zoology book, since it accurately shows the difference in each animal's capabilities of vision and sense perception. In clear and unfussy language the child gets to travel above ground, underground, fly a bit and go underwater. They will want to do that many times.

It’s funny. Unless you’re a teacher or librarian, a grown adult that does not work or live with children will come into very little contact with picture books. Then, one day, they produce a few kids and BLAMMO! They are shot into a world they haven’t visited since they were young themselves. They grab frantically at the classics, discover that a lot of them don’t work with very very young children (since when did “Horton Hatches the Egg” have so many words?!?), and then occasionally turn to the experts for help. And why? Parents’ reasons are not united on this front. Some read to their kids to instill a love of reading. Others to build little brains. Others to simply fill the long hours of the day. Occasionally a parent will also use a book to teach some kind of a lesson. If the parent is unlucky they will get stuck with a book sticky with didacticism (an unpleasant book that sucks all the joy out of the reading experience). But if they are lucky (or they are in the hands of a capable professional) they might find just the right book, teaching just the right lesson. Here’s an example: Let’s say you wanted to teach a kid empathy or how our perceptions change depending on our own experiences and who we are. How do you show that in 32 pages? Well, you could pick up some cloying, toxic dribble that overuses words like “hugs” and “friendship”. Nine times out of ten, that’s what’s going to happen. Or, if you are a clever parent, you pick up a book like “They All Saw a Cat”. It looks at first glance like it’s just about a cat. Delve a little deeper and you’ll find it about science and art and perception and empathy. And it does it all with very simple sentences, repetition, and a lot of white backgrounds. Not too shabby. Not too shabby at all.“The cat walked through the world, with its whiskers, ears, and paws . . .” In that walking it is seen. It is seen by a child, a dog, and a fox. It is seen by a fish, a mouse, and a bee. It is seen by a bird, a flea, a snake, a skunk, a worm, and a bat. And what's important is that this “seeing” changes with every creature. For mice and dogs, the cat is perceived through the lens of their own interactions with it. For worms and bats the cat is only visible through the ways in which it moves through space (vibrations through the ground and the ways in which echolocation shape it). By the end we see a hodgepodge cat, a mix of how each animal sees it. Then the cat comes to the water, viewing its own reflection, “and imagine what it saw?”The book this actually reminded me of the most was that old Rudyard Kipling story “The Cat Who Walked By Himself”. Unlike that tale we never really get this book from the cat’s perspective. Indeed, the cat is often only visible when others see him. The similarity to Kipling comes with the language. That very first sentence, for example: “The cat walked through the world, with its whiskers, ears, and paws . . .” And as in the original art for that story, the cat here is often pictured from the back. There’s a lot of debate about whether or not a book written by one person and illustrated by another can ever be as strong as a book that is written and illustrated by the same artist. “They All Saw a Cat” makes a fairly strong argument that artist who are also authors are the better way to go. Wenzel’s sentences are so perfectly layered here. If anything, they match the personality of a cat. There aren’t many words, true. But the measured tone is at once soothing and scintillating. I liked how the book broke up the animals. The first three are potential predators. The second three are potential prey. The final six are strict observers. It also ends perfectly with the best possible sentence. Not all picture books, no matter how beautiful they look, are capable of sticking their landings. This one does.In this book the publication page (where they tend to describe the artist’s process) gets a little slaphappy. It reads (and I am quoting this precisely), “The illustrations in this book were rendered in almost everything imaginable, including colored pencil, oil pastels, acrylic paint, watercolor, charcoal, Magic Marker, good old number 2 pencils, and even an iBook.” The other day I was listening to a podcast where one of the speakers speculated that including this kind of information in a book changes the adult reader’s perspective. Would I think less of this book if I found out it was done in digital ink? Possibly, though I should note that I was blown away by the art long before I ever turned to see how it was made. And while digital art is great and has its place, I’d like to see the program that replicates what Wenzel’s done here.The sheer beauty of the book is what strikes you first when you read it. Consider the two-page spread where on the left-hand side you see the cat through snake vision, and on the right-hand side you see the cat through skunk vision. The snake’s view is a vibrant shock of color, all yellows and reds and blues. The skunk’s in contrast, looks like the soft grainy sepia-tones of an old film. Maybe “Casablanca”. Put together, side-by-side, the same cat is its own opposite. But if Wenzel were constantly wowing you with eye-popping images that wouldn’t really support the narrative flow. That’s why the pacing of the book is key. Wenzel starts the book out very slowly, with lots of white backgrounds and views akin to what we see as people. The child, dog, and fox all see the cat similarly (though I loved the oversized bell around its neck, indicating the fox and dog’s superior sense of hearing through a visual medium). The fish is the first moment you start to separate from human visuals. The cat’s large, yellow eyes are 80% of the two pages. But it is the mouse’s Basquiat-esque view of the cat that steals the show. The red background, and the cat all teeth and claws, and terrifying eyes is a far cry from the cuddly creature at the start of the story. It’s also the moment when the child readers come to realize that perception is personal.An interesting criticism of this book is linked precisely to the more science-y aspects of the text. One of the commenters on a blog post I wrote, that included this book, said that, “I desperately wanted some nice science-y back matter to tell us how and why different animals see the cat the way they do. Sure, we can go OH, this animal must be colorblind! This animal ‘sees’ by sonar! But c’mon, throw us an edu-bone here. It felt like such a missed opportunity.” This is an interesting note. We’ve grown used to useful backmatter in this post-Core Curriculum world of ours. Would this book have been stronger if it had contained a science element to it? Yes and no. It would have been a real boon to teachers, you betcha, and probably to perceptive parents who could have turned it into a lesson for young readers. If I had to guess I’d say the reason it wasn’t done may have had something to do with the fact that Wenzel is mixing his fact and fiction here pretty closely. Each animal is “seeing” as it would in the wild, but that is not to say that the art is by any means scientific. The cartoonish quality to the animals (no better exemplified than in the mouse’s bulbous eyes) doesn’t hold up to close scrutiny. I would have very much liked notes on the accuracy of the art, but I can understand the fear of asking the reader to take the work too seriously. I don’t necessarily agree, but I understand it.How do you discuss this book with kids? Well, you might read it to them, start to finish, and then ask them which picture shows what the cat really looks like. When they select (some will go with the human view but I’ve no doubt a couple will prefer the dog or bird p.o.v.s) you then tell them that actually all the pictures in this book are true. And if you really want to blow their little minds, you tell them that there’s a good chance that the way you see the world isn’t the same way the person next to you does. Everyone, everywhere sees the world different from his or her neighbor. Is it any wonder we have problems? The solution is to try and see things from another person’s view. Now, if the kids think you’re speaking literally or figuratively, it doesn’t really matter. You’ve planted the seed. I got this for my 5 year old as a gift to celebrate his first day of kindergarten. He's all about trucks and dinosaurs, but when I read this he became fully absorbed by the different perspectives of each creature encountered by the cat. I had to throw in some extra lines to keep the story going, but what a lovely picture book! I wanted to share with my son that out in the big world everyone has a story and different ways of seeing and experiencing things. I'm very glad this book helped me deliver that message. I read this book to a group of pre-schoolers ( ages 3-5-ish) and they were entranced...Many of them seemed to understand that it was different points of view, same cat: some thought ( out loud, as kids this age do!) that it was different cats...but all "got" it. I was surprised that these kids knew about skunks (nothing like that here in NZ!) but they all resonated! And the illustrations are pure genius...they will be adding that book to their library ( I ignored hints that I should leave my copy behind: I want the continuing joy of reading it to my grandchildren!)

this book has beautiful artwork and shows the cat looking different from a bunch of different animals' perspectives. It gives me 2.5yro something to think about and she loves the colors. Since the words are relatively repetitive (the dog saw a cat...the bat saw a cat...), it's easy for her to "read" it herself and study each word.

I fell in love with viewing stars and planets 50+ years ago but grew frustrated with the problems: halos around stars, fuzzy views of planets, difficulty tracking objects in the night sky. And collimating the 'scope! Too much. So I searched for a good book to help me and this is the one that really fit the bill.Harrington knows his stuff. He explains it very, very well, and the book is organized in a manner that allowed me to grasp the points of telescopes, binoculars, eyepieces, and mounts. I let me to understand why focal length, power, eye relief, etc. are important and yet do not need to put me off. There are tables to help me quickly look at what matters to help my viewing experience. And he not only dealt with particular brands, using both frank discussions of products, clarifying types of telescopes and binoculars and other equipment, combined with his personal viewing experiences and reviews for a major astronomic viewing magazine. Perfect.I can now see the reasons for my difficulties and the solutions. I had been using a Bausch & Lomb 10X35 binoculars for looking in the sky at night, and it was frustrating. I spent only a hundred bucks more for a pair of Pentax binoculars that are wonderful, and I see so much more! I will also be able to get better use out of my two reflector telescops now that I understand the equipment better, and there are a couple of reasonably priced accessories I'll get, such as a better finder-scope.I didn't want something that would make it all more difficult for me, and this book gave the breadth of information and level of analysis I needed. Perfect!

I basically bought this book to get current on the latest gear, it fills the bill in every way as far as that goes with tons of pertinent and useful data to help a person decide where to go with their interest. I had a very high end telescope a few years ago, but it wasn't very portable, and very few people were willing to go through the ordeal of getting to dark and then setting up and observing quite far from home base! Recently I aquired a fixer upper Newtonian and wanted to fit it out a little better than usual for more casual and portable viewing. This book was perfect for exactly what I needed. It re-introduced me to the good, better and best gear, and made me realize that even a smaller, well set up scope could get the job done very well. I highly recommend the book to anyone starting out or re-entering the hobby after a hiatus. Solid, usefull and current info as long as you get the latest edition!!

Oh yeah. This book saved me from an expensive purchase I would not have been happy with.Learned enough to make a good decision on purchasing a (actually two) telescopes(s).I was very confused getting back into astronomy and looking at all the choices and reviews. Previous telescopes were department store types and after reading this book, it was not surprising I gave up the hobby for 30 years!I recommend this book prior to making ANY telescope purchase by the beginning astronomer.

Excellent book! This is the second book I am reading before making a telescope purchase. There is much more a telescope than I thought there was and this book goes into the necessary detail I need to understand before I make the correct purchase. I would recommend this book as the second book to read before making a purchase if you are a novice like me.

As a newcomer to astronomy, I have read 'Nightwatch', 'Turn Left at Orion', and this book. 'Nightwatch' provides some good advice on buying your first telescope. 'Star Ware', however, is a much more comprehensive guide to telescopes and telescope accessories. Take the time to read it and you will be rewarded with a wealth of information that will enable you to make informed decisions on what telescope is right for you and what else you will need to buy. My only criticism is that in an attempt to be comprehensive it provides almost too much information - a dizzying array of manufacturers for one thing. Also, I have the Kindle edition and I think for reference books like this I'd rather have the print version. But that's just me. Anyway, good telescopes aren't cheap and this book will help you make a good choice. Well worth the money.

This book is very easy to read, and extremely helpful if you are in the market for a telescope. The types of instruments available, and which ones are good for viewing which objects are all easily explained. Which eye pieces? Which mounts? Which manufacturers? The author doesn't dumb down the subject but presents the important specifications for intelligent buying in a manner that all can understand. Ultimately, he leaves that to you, but it really did make me a better consumer. I'm glad I spent a few bucks for the book not only for the well presented info but also because it was an interesting read. Thanks Mr. Harrington.

There are a number of books out there that cover available equipment for Amateur Astronomy. However, I haven't found any that cover this area as in depth as this book. The Author, Phil Harrington has certainly done his research, and brings this information to the reader in an easily understood way. I first bought this book in 2006 and found some of the information to be a little dated at that time. When I saw that there was going to be an updated version coming out, I knew I would be purchasing it. I purchased the updated version and it wasn't at all lacking. At the time of it's release (4/2007) it is current with regards to available equipment for the Amateur Astronomer. This book is easy to read and understand. When I am looking to purchase a new piece of equipment, Starware is the first book I grab for the information I need.

This is a very simple guide in comparison with earlier Lonely Planet Guides. Lots of information about where to eat, less on where to stay and not that much on walking tours etc which usually are included for the bigger cities in a country. There was not a section on the language - not even on how to say "hallo" and "goodbye" in Finnish. I think the guide would be helpful for my visit but not as helpful as I am used to expect from Lonely Planet books.

My husband and I really want to go to Uruguay and a couple we know are moving there this month, so I thought this book might give me some insight to the country. It is just OK in it's information, extremely basic. I don't like the way it is laid out; it is hard to find things--maybe because it is an eBook. I should look for a printed book by an established travel company, but there doesn't seem to be a lot out there.

I just got back from Punta del Este with my wife. The guide was very handy to generally move around, find places to eat and visit there. I travel with my iPad and iPhone, and stored the book on both, so we could constantly refer to it. No more bulky guide books for me!Reading the book beforehand gave me the general information we needed to feel very comfortable in a country new to us. I suppose it's the little things that counted: tips on how to exchange our currency, where to find ATM's open, whether to worry about safety issues or not, who to call in case of emergency.Once we were clear on those basics, we moved around like a local (though there were more tourists than locals there at this time of year).The book was very useful to choose day trips (we took a small boat to Gorriti island in the middle of Punta del Este bay, and visited the Achugarry Foundation, which was impressive) and to locate truly magnificent places we never would have found without the guide, like "las Vertientes", where we enjoyed a tasteful and very complete tea (I admit to having coffee) overlooking the fields, or dinner at Floreal in the patio surrounded by flowers, under the stars. We even wandered out to Garzon to try one of the restaurants recommended. Fabulous.I thoroughly recommend it, even for recurring visitors. There are many suggestions and places to visit we simply didn't have the time to see this time. Hopefully, we'll return for more!

I rarely use a guide book when traveling, but in he case of Uruguay, I really didn't have a clue regarding what to expect. The books nailed it for me. I arrived at the airport, took the cab and stayed at the Sheraton. The recommendations regarding what to do, buy, see, were all very good. I took the walk around the park (Biarritz) and had drinks with my husband at Chez Montevideo. Very nice. We also had a light lunch at Philomene and dinner at Clydes in the Carrasco neighborhood. My husband ordered a great hamburger and I enjoyed the fish. The place was neat and we would never have found it without the tips.Great country, better even with the book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone not only visiting Uruguay but also looking for more information about this wonderful country. The detailed description of its history and places to visit really take guides into a new level. This is the only “about law school” book I will whole heartedly recommend.McClurg is the first author I read that seems to understand that the majority of law students will not be going to a top 15 school. There are over 200 ABA accredited law schools in the US and it seems that most books about law school are geared towards the top 10% of schools and forget that the other 90% of people need more practical advice other than how to apply for Yale - Georgetown.McClurg gives a good glimpse into what law school will be like for the majority of students.From addressing the topicals fears incoming students have to tips on how to succeed (spoiler alert: there are no short cuts in law school!) and the real life impact law school has on your life. McClurg even includes a chapter on non-traditional students because he understands that a number of law students are not “high-school to undergrad to law” people. We have had families and jobs/careers and maybe will be working while in school.Where as other books will suggest you move in with your parents and have them help you pay for school this book understands that most of its readers will not have that option.This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone thinking about going to law school or anyone preparing to start their L1 journey.Let McClurg be your guide to note taking, outlining, exams, case-briefing, and the Socratic method. He will do so with humor and understanding.

First I should point out that the negative review (the only negative review I saw in comparison to the astounding number of wonderful reviews, I might add) should be disregarded because unless a person is a freak of nature and a Sheldon Cooper-type genius, he or she will undoubtedly have questions and fears the first year of law school. Many brilliant people enter law school and they did not get there by being idiots, so if they had questions and fears, you will have them as well. It is absolutely normal. Moreover, law school is about being prepared for any and every situation, so it is never too early to start preparing. I should also point out how very important it is to pick up this book if you are about to begin your first year of law school. Having a reliable and easy-to-understand guide before law school is not a suggestion, it is a necessity. Those who have read this little jewel will know what to expect and will be prepared to take on the indescribable experience of being a 1L. If you are entering your first semester as a 1L, you will need some idea of what to expect in relation to the Socratic method, legal writing and all those things you will experience in your first year. If you go into law school without a clue how to write a law school essay exam, a legal memo, etc., or if you have never heard of IRAC, you will have serious struggles. Do yourself an enormous favor: purchase this book and read it from front to back cover and take some notes because I can promise you will need this information, and contrary to expectations, there will be little time spent on teaching you any of this once classes begin.As a law student I have read several law school guides and have yet to find one that compares to 1L of a Ride. In fact I have found that many of them, even those written by other professors and lawyers, are incomplete as they fail to describe exactly what a 1L will need to know about writing in law school in a way that can be understood by someone who has never briefed a case or taken a law school exam. On a side note, if you made As in undergrad writing courses, you are most likely NOT going to have the same experience in law school relying on those same writing skills and styles; you WILL need to prepare yourself for a complete writing skill makeover and you will need to start learning immediately because writing in law school is absolutely nothing like writing in any other field or profession, and to try and use those same writing methods and skills in law school is a death sentence. But there is much hope even for those who have already begun law school. It seems there is one Professor on the planet who has not forgotten his 1L experience and who has accomplished the difficult task of communicating what 1Ls should know in a way that can be understood rather easily. Moreover, Professor McClurg is witty, sarcastic and genuine and he has a unique, hilarious way of communicating the concepts you need to know. This book will keep you laughing from the first to the last page and I can assure that you will have many page corners bent and many marks, notes and highlights throughout your copy of 1L of a Ride before you are finished reading.I recommend this book to anyone and everyone, law student or not. This book is a great source for anyone who has thought about law school, anyone who is in law school and ESPECIALLY for those who are about to begin the first year of law school, and it most certainly will help tutors and professors who are teaching 1Ls as it seems that the experience of the first year of law school is often forgotten (or perhaps becomes a repressed memory for some, depending on the insanity level of the experience) by many seasoned law students and professors. I would also recommend this book to family members of law students who would like to have an idea of what their loved ones are experiencing as law students.Bottom line: this is one of if not THE very best, most comprehensive and informative sources available to anyone interested in law. Professor McClurg listens to his students and appreciates their experiences, and his book continues to serve those who read and follow his guidance.

Professor McClurg reveals what it's like to attend and succeed law school before you get there. This book opens your eyes to the good and bad sides of law school. From how to handle the extraordinary amounts of stress, to how to mesh life as a 1L with your normal life--1L of a Ride gives you a great 'what to expect' guide for all of this and more. Backed by empirical evidence as well as student testimonials, you see the real, objective side of what it's like during the first year of law school. I myself am a soon-to-be 1L at the University of Memphis (where McClurg is a prof.) and I found it extremely beneficial to me that the book is backed up by testimonials from many UM students. After reading this book, I feel confident that I know what to expect and ultimately succeed in law school. I recommend this book for any student going to law school. You will see the good, bad & ugly of what to expect, but ultimately you will feel more prepared for the rigors that await you.

This is a really great 1st year guide. I love the tips and tricks. There is a LOT of "well, duh." moments... I.e. get to know your professors, do your homework, be prepared for class, etc... I would say the first 5-6 chapters could have been summed up in 2 chapters... However, the chapters that begin teaching you how to brief and what to look for are incredible. The rest of the book is also very helpful. Since it didn't take super long to read the first 5-6 chapters, I'd still give this a 5 star, even though you could easily skim this info.

I have less than a month to prepare for the unknown unknowns of law school, so I grabbed both an ecopy and paperback version of 1L of a Ride. This book has gone a long way towards dispelling me of the myths I didn't even know I believed, and preparing me for the rigors of student life again after a break of several years. The writing style is accessible, informative, and humorous without being distracting. I highly recommend this to anyone starting law school, whether in a month or in a year.

A must read before starting law school. As I enter 3L year, I still find myself going back to this book for advice and guidance. Tab the book as you read and even type notes from it. I promise it will help you navigate your first year and even after that.
