About the Author
Bhikkhu Bodhi is an American Buddhist monk originally from New York City. Ordained in 1972 in Sri Lanka, where he lived for over twenty years, he was the long-time president and chief editor for the Buddhist Publication Society in Kandy. He currently resides at Chuang Yen Monastery in upstate New York. As described in the summary of this book above, it is a translation of a very classic Buddhist scripture from the Pali Canon.I have only read a little bit of it but what I have read has made me believe this is an extraordinary book.Many of the suttas included are well known and listed elsewhere (including online), but this book includes a translation of the canonical commentaries, which are extremely enlightening. They supplement and describe each of the instructions in the suttas with great detail and elucidation. You could not find even one tenth of this information anywhere else.So far, I have only read the commentarial sections on the Lovingkindness Sutta (Metta Sutta) and the Discourse on Blessings (Maha Mangala Sutta). They enlighten these suttas so much, you will wish you had this book ten years ago. Really help bring them to life.Required reading for any serious student of Buddhism! Buy it!
This is the latest of Bikkhu Bodhi's translations of early Buddhist texts from the Pali language. It contains the complete text of the Suttanipata (about 200 pp.) as well as the traditional Pali commentary (nearly 1,000 pp!). The suttas (discourses by the Buddha) in this collection include some of the earliest recorded Buddhist documents. They are mostly in verse, often with a short prose introduction. You will find here most of what is taught in the Theravada Buddhist tradition, often in forms of expression and focus that predate later works from the four Nikayas. The commentary provides contextual stories for each sutta followed by a detailed explanation of terms and doctrinal interpretations of phrases and longer passages. It is extremely detailed: both exhaustive and, for me at least, exhausting. Bhikkhu Boddhi provides an excellent introduction and detailed footnotes throughout, focusing particularly on translation issues. I am no Pali scholar, so I cannot comment on the accuracy of the translation, but for those of you who do read the language, I would guess that Bikkhu Bodhi's comments regarding translation will be very useful. Certainly as English text the book reads well. The presentation is well organized, and the book itself is beautifully printed, and bound.
Many of us who studied Buddhism at an American university learned much about Mahayana Buddhism because of its prevalence in China, Japan, and Korea and the popularity of Zen from the 1950s onward. But the Pali texts are a major heritage for all Buddhists, not just those who study Theravada Buddhism. Personally, I find Bhikkhu Bodhi's translations and commentaries quite useful in deciphering the early texts. His translations are clear and he provide ample notes to explain concepts that are foreign to modern-day English speakers. This is a wonderful addition to one's collection of early suttas. It includes the famous Metta Sutta, the sutra on Loving Kindness.
I'm devoting my life to studying and following the practical instructions of Buddha in this volume.
Great purchase! As usual the word of Buddha is very insightful throughout this translation by Bhikkhu Bodhi. The only reason I'm not giving this book a 5 star is because I received it damaged do to poor shipping methods. This book is not inexpensive, so I was not happy to receive it in a box with my other order all bouncing around together; which caused damage to the dust cover.
Thank you V.V. Bhikkhu Bodhi for this translation. I was a little surprised/ disappointed to see "wandering like a rhinoceros horn" among the excellent- as -usual scholarly translation work by the Venerable Bhikkhu. The access to this canonical work however far outweighs any small detail in the awkward word choice.
So grateful to Bhikkhu Bodhi for his reverential, informed and clear editions of the Theravadan Pali texts, including this one; we are so fortunate to have him and his legacy of work!
A must read for anyone interested in Buddhism.
