The No-Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers and Preschoolers: Gentle Ways to Stop Bedtime Battles and Improve Your Child's Sleep, by Elizabeth Pantley

Review

"In this excellent companion to her parenting classic, The No-Cry Sleep Solution, Pantley debunks the myths about children and sleep. She provides a plethora of examples about how perfectly natural it is for children to have sleep issues. However, parents will be thrilled to hear that just because something is normal doesn't mean they have to live with it. She addresses problems and solutions for a wide variety of sleep-related issues. This is hope condensed for the tired parent; essential for all public libraries."~Â Kari Ramstrom, MLIS, starred review, The Library Journal

From the Author

My previous sleep book, and the predecessor to this one, is The No-Cry Sleep Solution. It provides answers to better sleep for  children from the day of birth through toddlerhood. My youngest  child was a very frequent night-waking, all-night breastfeeding-baby. My experience learning how to help him sleep all night was the incentive for me to write my first no-cry sleep book. Since then, I have corresponded with tens of  thousands of parents, and I have expanded my research up through the preschool years to bring you this edition of The No-Cry Sleep Solution.Because the magic of children is that they are all very different from one another, and that they are unique in their transitions from one stage of growth to the next, this edition of The No-Cry Sleep Solution crosses paths with the first for that in-between stage from baby to toddler. It then moves forward through the preschool years, and for many children, into the primary grades as well.I hope to guide you along a gentle, peaceful journey to good sleep for everyone in your family.

I received this book in exchange for a review. Pantley's No Cry Sleep Solution had some very helpful nuggets, so I was delighted to see this book. My daughter began showing interest in the potty early on, but a) was terrified of the toilet b) would not poop at all, even in the little portable potty and c) she lost interest after a while. I found the checklist very helpful and realized that my girl was on the cusp for readiness, so we waited a couple more months. This time, while she needed encouragement, she agreed to use the toilet, with the soft adapter seat, but was only pooping using the little potty. It took me some time to figure out, but she would have multiple accidents, within minutes, for hours. I put her back in a diaper or pull ups out of frustration as I dealt with my confusion as to what was going on. After becoming Sherlock Holmes of this perplexing toilet issue, I realized she was constipated and frequent accidents to that extent usually mean she really does have to poop, and I have to encourage her to stay on the toilet. One incentive was going to the park. Another time, it was stickers. Now, I just sing and dance our "poopie in the toilet" song, but still give stickers. The book itself is an easy read, and it is very helpful, but I think it can be improved on. I'm still trying to help my toddler to wipe and learn how to pull her undies and pants back up for example. I also felt the book ended abruptly. It's difficult to articulate how I came to this conclusion, but I went through the book twice and felt the same way. What I do appreciate about Pantley's philosophy is that every family is different, and you do what works for everyone involved within healthy parameters.

I have read both of the sleep books - the Infants and Babies, as well as the Toddlers and Preschoolers and they are both terrific books! When our daughter was an infant, as first time parents, we were terrified of what seem to be the only two options for getting her sleep well for naps and nights. It seemed that we either had to choose letting her cry herself to sleep (which felt very uncomfortable to us) or allowing her to sleep in our bed with us (which we also weren't comfortable with. Elizabeth's book gave us a third option, to put her to sleep in a way that we felt comfortable with and also instilled good sleep habits for her. Her gentle and compassionate style about creating routines, respecting the bond between parent and child and tips for sleep issues were just what we needed to wean her from night nursing, make sure she was getting the right amount of nap time to promote a good night's sleep, etc. were fantastic. The preschool/toddler book was just as helpful when she got older! It helped us eliminate the struggles that came up as our baby turned into a more independent toddler wanting to set her own rules for sleep. Transition from crib to bed, tips on night waking, fighting naps, etc. were especially helpful. I cannot recommend these books enough! We are now expecting baby #2 and I have pulled out the books again to prepare for how we will help him in the same ways when the time comes. We also have had some recent struggles as my daughter gets older and is fighting her naps and we really want to find some solutions before the new baby arrives. I am already reviewing Elizabeth's great tips and seeing them work. Thank you Elizabeth Pantley for giving us parents who don't want to see their little one's cry or co-sleep another way... and helping us all get a good night's sleep!

Only days after starting the methods in this book our 2, almost 3 year old started sleeping through the night after 2, almost 3 years of of waking up every 2 hours. It is a miracle! I am starting to get my mind back. I can be more of the parent I hope to be. My sweet little girl is no longer having daily tantrums (I thought it was her age, but it was her sleep deprivation!).We thought we were doing things right, but Elizabeth Pantley helped me understand that I could and should do them even better and how. We made lots of tiny changes, but they all added up to sleep for both our little girl and my husband and I. We are SO thankful for this book. Thank you Elizabeth Pantley!!!!!

This book has provided a totally new frame of reference for our family. My sixteen month old is our first, and he has been a rockstar sleeper at night, but nap time has always been an issue... and what was finicky but doable got even worse with an extended season of teething, visits from out of town family, and sickness. The author is both incredibly encouraging and realistic - no tears is the ENDGAME, it won’t always be the path. But minimizing tears on the journey to good sleep is possible, and she shows you how. I thought we’d never see the back of our nap time sleep issues, but FINALLY my son will nap in his crib after putting into place a structure based on this book!!! I’m so thankful— and now I need a margarita. 😅

This book is perfect for moms who dont want to leave their babies to cry and even for those who are generally against sleep training. This is not another version of the pick up, put down method, but instead just some tips on routines or ideas parents can incorporate to help baby or toddler sleep. Elizabeth pantley is famous for her “pantley pull of method” in her original book and she had some good ideas in this one too, especially for tackling specific situations like easing a toddler off night time breastfeeding. What i like most is that, unlike some other books ::cough... precious little sleep...cough::, the book does not feel like it tackles sleep from the perspective that the parent child relationship should be adversarial when it comes to sleep. Its not the me against baby mentality that feels so wrong in some other books, even if they are often covered by humor
