His explanation of the phenomenon of "ressentiment" and the "Slave Revolt" in Christianity is perhaps more relevant than ever. A dense, conplext, systematic work of philosophy that avoids that cardinal sin which so many commit: lack of a proper historical sense.In both boooks, the prose is second-to-none.

The "Genealogy of Morals" itself is what it is. There are many others who have done a more critical review of it than I can provide. However, what I am dissatisfied with is the quality of the Kindle edition of this book. It's terrible! It looks like the publisher scanned a printed version of the book, ran it through an OCR, and published it straight to the electronic version without passing it through any kind of editing process. There are so many examples of incorrect character recognition of the printed type that it distracts from the book content. For example: "What is present-day Nihilism if it is n.)t that?" (Kindle Locations 548-549). What is a n.)t? Nietzsche already has a unique style of writing, so it's hard to distinguish between what he meant to say and what is printed in this electronic version. Another example: "...the odour of the entrails of a misbegotten soul! - ? That excepted..." (Kindle Locations 537-538). Did he actually write ! - ?, or is that another misprint. Do I look for meaning in this (as small things like this in philosophy can actually have meaning), or can I ignore it as an artifact of sloppy electronic translation? It can be very frustrating at times.Update (I'll post these mistakes as I come across them):commas!: "...we have "utility," "forgetting." "habit." and finally "error," the whole..." (Kindle Location 284)wrong parentheses: "...got to lick {not out of fear, not at all out of fear! But because God ordains that one should honour all authority)..."(Kindle Locations 596-597)random f--f the triumph?: "...what they demand they call not revenge but f the triumph of righteousness..." (Kindle Locations 604-605)On second thought, I'm not getting paid to edit this book. You get the idea--there are many, many mistakes in this electronic version, so be prepared.

Nietzsche is Nietzsche. Stunning insights mixed with nonsense all make for a subversive but fascinating text. Too insightful to ignore!

Cream of the crop.Kaufman and Hollingdale deserve a medal for the work they've done here. A true gem of a book!Soooo happy it's still in print!

Best of Nietzsche, with the best translation. Many people misunderstand Nietzsche because they don't have a wholistic view of his philosophy. This book rectifies that. Many think Nietzsche is a nihilist. Not at all. A very good and comprehensive read, and edition.

First, this is a beautiful little book - which is, of course, appropriate. It's lovely soft, flexible leather (or feels like leather), that will easily fit into a coat pocket or your purse; it's the right size for my (smallish) adult hands. It's a book that you want to open, to hold, to approach again and again - again, absolutely appropriate.I shouldn't say this, because I have not investigated every book about Marian devotion, but I'll say it anyway: if I wanted to buy ONE book to help someone come to know Mary, appreciate Mary, and enter into more 'relationship' with Mary, I'd get this book. It would be an excellent choice for a new Catholic convert, especially for someone for whom the 'Mary issue' is still something of a struggle or something alien. It contains enough 'apologetic' material to say, 'There is a reasonable explanation for all this' without being an apologetics book. Anyone who finds the simple explanations intriguing can always explore further.I'd definitely recommend 'looking inside' to see the Table of Contents, if it's available. The book is divided into two parts: Preparing for Marian Devotion, which explains Mary in God's Plan, Marian Doctrines, Historical Highlights of Marian Devotion, and Marian Devotion in Practice. Each of these sections is small and easily digested; I took it to daily Mass with me and read a few of the short texts after Mass each day.The second and larger part is Aids for Marian Devotion. Here you get teachings on Marian devotion, which I found a welcome 'moderate' approach. I have read Louis de Montfort and found him overwhelming - a bit like the 'Marian' version of the guy on the street who gets in your face and insists that you 'need to be saved, NOW.' I live in a country with strong Marian devotion, and some de Montfort-formed people are so extreme as to be very off-putting. The texts in this book have the sanity and sense that one expects from nuanced Church documents - again, excellent for anyone who is 'Mary-shy' because of coming from an anti-Mary background or who has been put off by Marian extremists.There's a wonderful section on Mary in Scripture - again helpful for people coming from a Bible-only background. Reading through this book - everything in short, manageable pieces - is like getting a thorough overview of Mary in the Scriptures, Mary in the lives of saints and religious, Marian devotions and miracles over history and around the world. Then you come to Marian prayers - including some with the Spanish and Latin versions. There's something for everyone here, for every style of prayer. Especially helpful for me (I admit having the most wandering mind during the Rosary) are the short texts connected to each mystery of the Rosary, as well as a list of scriptural meditations (you have to look up the texts yourself) for each mystery. There are probably prayers here that you've never heard of before - a real treasury. There are short texts and prayers connected with every Marian Feast in the calendar as well as selections of poetry (nothing cheesy or trite).A charming, and sadly neglected Marian devotion is the crowning of Mary's statue in May. This book gives you the Hymn for crowning, and then a delightful list of flowers that have been associated with the Blessed Virgin over the centuries. I knew a few - like marigolds ('Mary's Gold') and Lady Slipper, but had no idea how many other flowers had alternative Marian names or were associated with Mary. This list invites plenty of exploration for children, gardeners, nature loves and simply trivia or history buffs. Home-schooling parents could create a wonderfully educational project from researching the flowers to growing them and having your own Marian crowning at home.This book is a wonderful compendium of Marian teaching, tradition and prayer; I really can't imagine needing any other book for Marian devotion. At the same time, it is a good launching point if you want to go deeper into teachings about Mary (it may introduce you to saints or papal documents you didn't know about). Great for cradle Catholics, for seminarians, for converts - even for open-minded non-Catholics who are willing to explore Marian devotion without prejudice. Just don't lend them your copy - you might not get it back.

A beautiful devotional book. It has a nice blue cover that's very soft and silver edging on the pages. It also has a blue satin ribbon bookmark. The book contains information regarding devotion to Mary as well as lots of prayers. I bought the book for myself but it would also make a great gift!

This book is beautifully printed with silver edges and lovely blue leather binding. The content is excellent, reminiscent of the old Fr. Lasance prayer books, giving much solid information about Our Lady, which is much needed in our day and hard to find in one place. It also fosters a devotion to Our Lady using many formulas handed down to us over the centuries. I have one major objection: why did the good sisters use updated translations of the traditional Marian prayers? Even the familiar "Hail Mary" now contains "you" instead of "thee", "are" instead of "art", "you" instead of "thou", "your" instead of "thy". The traditional words are still used in the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church in the official English translation, and the Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers (at least for the "Hail Mary"), published by our American bishops.. This causes a division among generations, especially in praying the rosary. I would have thought the sisters would have taken the high road in utilizing the traditional reverent and poetic phrasing of these precious prayers. One shouldn't tamper with poetry. I am also surprised that the publishers went along with this decision.

I have purchased the kindle edition several months ago. I like this book. The Sisters and Publishers have done a wonderful job in editing this volume. There are many prayer books devoted to Mary. However, I believe this is the first to add brief summaries from various Catholic sources like Catechism, Church Councils, Papal Teaching that support and enhance one's understanding and devotion to Our Blessed Mother. I especially enjoy meditating on the Old Testament types of Mary. Made me go dig deeper into scripture for fuller understanding. Of course adding the Fathers of the Church etc--makes this a wonderful guide,.along with the inclusion of antiphons from the LOTH is just great idea as it shows unity between liturgical prayer and private devotion. My only slight disappoint (being French descent and from New England) is that there was no mention of the appearance of Our Lady of LaSalette---there is even a National Shrine in Attleboro, MA. However this does not prevent me from rating this Manual a 5.

Carefully researched and beautifully written, this book not only contains Marian devotionals but also teaches the Church's understanding of the importance of our devotion to the Blessed Mother of God, the Virgin Mary.

This heavily illustrated volume chronicles the history of jazz and blues from their roots to the present day. In the introduction, jazz author and journalist Mandel explains that the book's intention is not to provide an exhaustive history; rather, he and the authors, drawn primarily from music journalism, hope that the selected eras and performers represent the breadth of styles and stories that make up jazz and blues. There is coverage of hundreds of musicians, ranging from blues guitarist Daddy Stovepipe, born in 1867, to jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman, born in 1966.Aside from the opening chapter, which discusses the "early years," from the late 1890s through the 1910s, and the final one, focusing on contemporary musicians from the 1990s through today, the book is arranged chronologically into chapters representing one decade each. Each chapter begins with a one-page overview of culture and music during that decade and then treats jazz and blues histories separately. The authors include a detailed look at prominent musical styles and important events, several pages featuring the top four or five artists of the decade, and brief entries on other important musicians. Each chapter also features "WWW Track boxes" offering URLs linking to MP3 audio files. A general index, as well as separate indexes for jazz and blues musicians, is included, as are a glossary and several pages describing the equipment and instruments typically used by jazz and blues artists.Although there are more in-depth reference sources, such as The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz (Grove, 2002) and All Music Guide to the Blues (Backbeat Books, 2003), this volume's extensive collection of photos, links to audio files, and inclusion of some of today's younger artists, such as Diana Krall and Nora Jones, make it a worthy supplement to other works. Tooting my own horn, but not really -- I edited this book, but what's good about it comes from its staff of writers and the superb photo research. This book can be poured over by people of all ages for discovery about great American culture and personages. Probably less interesting to experts in jazz and blues than to newcomers or people with some knowledge, eager to learn more.

The innovative user-friendly touch of the Internet links is integrated into the sections of many of the artists (i. e., not put in an appendix or resources section at the back of the main text) by graphics with a web address. Another reader-friendly touch is a graphic noting the most representative recording by a particular musician. This is especially helpful considering the long careers, many recordings, and evolving styles of many of them. Most of the photographs show the artists in performance. Blues and Jazz are taken decade by decade from the early years through the nineteen twenties down to the eighties and the contemporary era, with a closing section on the instruments and equipment going with the two long-lasting and changeable types of music. Profiles of each artist cover biographical background, music career, and the artist's influences on or contributions to the field. For historical overview, comprehensive treatment of all the leading jazz and blues performers, and primary references cited, the "Illustrated Encyclopedia..." is an ideal introduction to these interrelated fields of music.

This well-illustrated book makes for an intriguing reference on some of the greatest American artists of the 20th century. Lots and lots of books and studies fail to join jazz and blues at all, and none do as clearly or as effortlessly as this much-needed and very worthwhile volume. It is both comprehensive and sensible.It covers a lot of ground. Though I wish it had more information on specific solos, which is where we really get a grasp of the depth of artistry here, this is the best book of its kind I have seen and I am grateful for it.

Preface Visualization is a great field to work in these days. Advances in computer hardware and software have brought this technology into the reach of nearly every computer system. Even the ubiquitous personal computer now offers specialized 3D graphics hardware. And with the release of Windows95 and OpenGL, there is an API for 3D graphics as well. We view visualization and visual computing as nothing less than a new form of communication. All of us have long known the power of images to convey information, ideas, and feelings. Recent trends have brought us 2D images and graphics as evidenced by the variety of graphical user interfaces and business plotting software. But 3D images have been used sparingly, and often by specialists using specialized systems. Now this is changing. We believe we are entering a new era where 3D images, visualizations, and animations will begin to extend, and in some cases, replace the current communication paradigm based on words, mathematical symbols, and 2D images. Our hope is that along the way the human imagination will be freed like never before. This text and companion software offers one view of visualization. The field is broad, including elements of computer graphics, imaging, computer science, computational geometry, numerical analysis, statistical methods, data analysis, and studies in human perception. We certainly do not pretend to cover the field in its entirety. However, we feel that this text does offer you a great opportunity to learn about the fundamentals of visualization. Not only can you learn from the written word and companion images, but the included software will allow you to practice visualization. You can start by using the sample data we have provided here, and then move on to your own data and applications. We believe that you will soon appreciate visualization as much as we do. In this, the second edition of Visualization Toolkit and vtk version 2.0, we have added several new features since the first edition. Besides several new filters such as clipping, smoothing, 2D/3D Delaunay triangulation, and a new decimation algorithm, we have added several readers and writers, and better support net-based tools such as Java and VRML. Finally, our PC support has greatly improved, including a nice tool for managing the compile process. The additions of these features necessitated the addition of three special contributors to the text: Lisa Sobierajski Avila, Rick Avila, and C. Charles Law. Rick and Lisa worked hard to create an object-oriented design for volume rendering, and to insure that the design and software is fully compatible with the surface-based rendering system. Charles is the principle architect and implementor for the imaging pipeline. We are proud of the streaming and caching capability of the architecture: It allows us to handle large data sets despite limited memory resources. Especially satisfying has been the response from users of the text and software. Not only have we received a warm welcome from these wonderful people, but many of them have contributed code, bug fixes, data, and ideas that greatly improved the system. In fact, it would be best to categorize these people as co-developers rather than users of the system. We would like to encourage anyone else who is interested in sharing their ideas, code, or data to contact the vtk user community, or one of the authors. I started to use the companion free software "visualization toolkit" back to the first edition of this book. My goal was to write a Windows application called "3D Groundwater Explorer" for the 3D Visualizaiton of data and results from groundwater flow and contaminant transport simulations. It was a tough time, partly because this book focuses on algorithms and does not explain how to use the Toolkit in details (maybe the Toolkit is too "big" to be explained in details). Despite of the rather high learning curve, the Toolkit provides virtually everything that one might need in creating impressive and informative visualization image. The Visualization Toolkit is a real tremendous accomplishment.

This book is poorly titled, because it discusses the algorithms and techniques of visualization much more than the use of the Visualization Toolkit software. However, it is a good introduction to scientific visualization, and the free software included on the CD is an extremely powerful and useful tool. However, if you only wish to learn to use the software, The Visualization Toolkit User's Guide would be much more appropriate for you.

This is clearly one of the worst books I've ever seen. I do admit there's lots of detail in there on visualization techniques etc. However, buying a book named "The Visualization Toolkit" I expect information about exactly this. Instead, what you get with this book is in-depth coverage of how the marching cubes algorithm works for example. Now let me ask you: Does that information help you using the toolkit? Definitely not. Consequently, if you want a practical guide to using VTK, do NOT consider this one.

The book gives you a good overview of the most important modern algorithms in computational geometry and computer graphics. AND: On the CD included you find a professional programming system with implementations of the mentioned algorithms in SourceCode! You can easily extend the system by your own algorithms in C++. Every Researcher who starts to work in this field should read this book and use these implementations.

This book is great for gaining an in-depth understanding of the underlying visualization algorithms used in the Visualization Toolkit.If you would like understand how to use the VTK software, you should purchase The Visualization Toolkit User's Guide. This companion book is updated for each major release of VTK, and contains many detailed examples.
