After reading the first two essays in this massive work, it is my considered opinion that Michael Beaney knows more about analytic philosophy than any other person alive. OUP is noted for selecting the top scholar in the field to edit the volumes in its prestigious Handbook series, and they did not let us down here. This astonishing compilation is the largest (over 1100 pp.) I am aware of under one cover, and the breath, depth, and rigour of the contributions are to be greatly admired.So you like comprehensive? Try chapters 3 and 4 (also written by Beaney). The former is a chronology of the key thinkers, publications, and events in the history of analytic philosophy. It is in the form of a chart with the thinkerslisted alphabetically and the events by year (starting in 1781 and finishing with 2013). Chapter 4 is an exhaustivebibliography that is 84 pp. and contains thousands of entries. These two chapters are a scholar's dream and aheaven for completists.The history of analytic philosophy is usually divided up into significant movements. The first is the logicist period that was the origin of analytic philosophy. Gottlob Frege's work in the philosophy of mathematics in the 1880s was followed by Bertrand Russell's seminal publications in the first part of the 20th century, culminating in his profound three volume treatise with Whitehead titled Principia Mathematica. The logicist philosophers thought that mathematics could be reduced to logic. Their project was ultimately a failure, but is deemed a magnificent failure by historians of the philosophy of logic and mathematics. Part I of the Handbook goes into exquisite detail concerning these matters.

Although this book is highly professionally done, I have found almost no use for its contents in the months since I purchased it. This is surprising, since I am deeply interested in what I take to be analytic philosophy. Perhaps it is the way that the text is organized around big, looming problems, instead of logic, metaphysics, epistemology, or ethics per se? It is hard to see how someone could find the book useful, even though clearly a big effort was made to make it useful for its intended audience. My sense is that it is slightly too dry, slightly too ponderous (if that is possible? I mean in a psychological sense), and does not get to the point (un-moored?). This text seems to take all the criticisms of history to heart, and therefore lose the vigor that would make it communicate to young philosophers. But if it is only for old philosophers, what is the point? This is nothing like Aquinas, Nietzsche, or some other powerful minds. It does not have conviction. It does not seem to believe in itself. My conclusion, then, is that it is obsessed with mathematics. But that is not the quest it sets out to complete. It might even be confused, if a high qualification is granted. This text would be better off with some creative ideas from an undergraduate, and some bulleted lists. My opinion maybe. but I have been a Top Writer in analytic and modern philosophy on Quora.

My 10 year old girl is so IN LOVE with Warrior Cats. It’s such an amazing read for later elem school and early middle school kids. A perfect transition to the novels, too. She’s on her last trilogy in this manga series, then she’ll be ready for the big novels, which are more for later middle schoolers or more advanced early readers. They do have cat violence, good guys vs bad guys, battles, survival, a concept of a practices faith and ‘heaven’ for warriors, plot twists, and strife, all the good stuff - but NO SEXUAL inappropriateness. It makes her feel, as a good book should. She and her friends are so into these that they play it and pretend it, and she even had a Warrior Cats themed party. I can’t recommend this series enough.

Even though the warrior series is aimed at children; nevertheless, I found the concept of warrior cat clans very intriguing. This 90 page graphic novel (Ravenpaw’s Path: Shattered by Erin Hunter) is the third book I have read of this warrior series. Like any good novel there must be conflict, tragedy, and character development. This book begins on a happy note with Ravenpaw and his best friend Barley waking up in the barn at a farm.They love living with an older couple and the two dogs on the farm. They are free to roam around and there are always plenty of mice to hunt and other prey around for them to eat. The quiet and peaceful life is interrupted when a cat named Willie, along with his mate, Minty who also happens to be expecting kits soon, and three other cats named Snapper, Pounce and Tess ask Ravenpaw if they could come into the barn for a while. They wind up staying long after the kittens are born. Ravenpaw being the gracious and trusting cat hunted and got the visiting cats food during their stay. Barley did not trust the visiting cats, but Ravenpaw was fascinated by the kittens and ignored the warning signs.I never give away too much information when reviewing a novel because it spoils it for the reader. There are some interesting and disturbing twists and turns in this graphic novel and I found this story a compelling read and quickly finished the book. If you are a fan of the warrior series you should check out this page turning graphic novel.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. My 11-year-old son is an avid Warriors fan, and I have been enjoying the series very much as well. We had one of the Warriors Super Edition books with a short Manga section in the back and my son loved that version of the story. It's not really my thing, but he found seeing the cats to be a great new twist on how the stories are being told. Ravenpaw has been his favorite character ever since Into the Wild, so we bought this as his first full manga book. I thought it would be a good way to pass the time on a dreary winter weather day, and it was, sort of. He said he really enjoyed the story, although the scene with chicks being killed was a little intense according to him, but he was finished in less than half an hour. I'm all about buying books and the fact that he loves this series means we're investing some serious money in it with all the books coming out. However, it's a little disappointing to pay the same price for 30 minutes of reading by comparison with the books that at least provide a few days of entertainment. If you've got a Warriors fan in your house, they may really enjoy this format, but beware it will be a quick read.

My 13 year old daughter is addicted to this warrior series. Shes has the whole collection now and cherishes them. She can also use these on her reading test at school for a grade so that is a major plus.

This book is cat crazy. Epic does not even come close to describing how good it is, but I wish that Ravenpaw will one day rejoin ThunderClan, but, I doubt he ever will. If you like Ravenpaw as much as I do, this is the right book for you. If for some reason Ravenpaw is not your favorite character, there is no hope. The book is about Ravenpaw, a Clan cat who had an evil mentor, Tigerclaw, who tried to kill him so he left to the Twolegplace, and lives with his friend, Barley. All is calm untill rogue cats drive them away. It ends with a cliffhanger, making you want to buy the next one. GET. THIS. BOOK.

This series is my 12 year old's ultimate favorite! LOVE LOVE LOVE! She treasures every book and can not wait for the next to be released! Couldn't be happier!

this is the first in a trilogy of warrior mangas that I favor. (then again, I favor all of the mangas!!!)anyway......ravenpaw is a thunderclan apperentice who branches out from the clans because of tigerclaw, (tigerstar)whom supposedly wants to kill him. Ravenpaw now lives on a peaceful farm with his friend, Barley. They have a good life there untill something very suprising happens... (WARNING: SPOILERS)A group of rouges has found their farm and has requested to stay for a while while one of their cats has kits. Ravenpaw warmley welcomes the visitors, but barley sees something suspisis. suspishish. (I HATE SPELLLING!!!!!!) anyway.........barley notices one of the cats trying to teach the young kits a deathlock battle move, and knows that these cats are from....(this may or may not suprise you...) BLOODCLAN!!! soon after, the rouges leave the farm, to find a new life. Ravenpaw and barley are very happy of that. when they are walking along the rafters a few nights later, they are shocked to see THE ROUGES.it turns ito a warzone as the rouges jump down into the chicken coop and kill a lot of poultry. the rouges flee, leaving ravenpaw and barley in the midst of the crime scene. the twolegs catch them, and they run into the rouges and have a battle. the rouges lose the battle, ravenpaw and barley return to the farm and sleep the night. Only to find out that a fire is about to burn the barn to the ground. they flee, walk a really long time and end up at the moonstone. they are met by starclan whom tells them to go to thunderclan and get help.in short....I love this book.XDwcrtf(warrior cats rule the forest!)

The author, a public policy professor at Maryland, has written the definitive study of the rise of conservative lawyers and entities to a position of legal dominance over the last 30 years or so. He has pulled together into one explanatory structure a number of diverse agents, so that we can see how they all interacted and contributed to this result. The book certainly cleared up my understanding of this phenomenon, which is essential to grasping political developments in this country over the last quarter century. Published by Princeton, the book is one of Princeton's outstanding "Studies in American Politics."The initial introductory chapter I did not find particularly helpful and can be bypassed. The book begins to hit its stride in the second chapter on the "liberal legal network." It is helpful to have handy a copy of Laura Kalman's perceptive "The Strange Career of Legal Liberalism" to fully ingest the author's analysis. Basically, the author suggests, a combination of liberal legal groups (e.g., NAACP LDF; ACLU), elite law schools and their liberal faculty, the American Bar Association, and especially the Ford Foundation during the 1960's formed a potent coalition pushing the incorporate of liberal ideas into the law. This is, of course, also the era of Warren Court activism. Particular important in this regard was the "Gideon" decision which in turn led to the development of the Legal Services Program which unleashed numerous law suits pushing liberal ends in public interest litigation. Much of this activity was encouraged by generous support from the Ford Foundation. This activity generated a conservative response via conservative public interest law firms such as the Pacific Legal Foundation and the Chamber of Commerce. However, because of being controlled by business interests, lacking academic support, and making tactical mistakes, the first generation of conservative public interest firms generally was not successful.A highly favorable development was the introduction of "law and economics" into legal analysis, and the two chapters devoted to this topic are among the best in the book. Particularly important in this regard are, of course, Judge Posner, Henry Manne (who established various programs at several schools and remade George Mason Law School), and the Olin Foundation, which becomes sort of the conservative Ford Foundation. Probably the strongest chapter in the book is devoted to the Federalist Society, which skillfully lays out its history, goals, and methods. The author is insistent that "boundary maintenance" separates the FS from its members'political activity, but I found this argument less than convincting. The FS did provide a network of highly skilled lawyers and faculty who generated vital legal analysis to support the conservative legal movement. So, when the second waive of conservative public interest law firms arrives in the late 1980's ("Center for Individual Rights" and the "Institute for Justice"), it is successful given the lessons of the past, the presence of the Federalist Society, the academic foundation laid by the law and economics movement, and highly effective leadership.This summary touches upon but a bit of the richness of this fine volume. The author had done a superior job of research, including extensive interviews. Forty-three pages of extensive notes are included, but not a bibliography. It would have been helpful if the author had explained a bit more in detail what comprised "law and economics" analysis, but that is my only real complaint. This is not a book just for conservatives, which I certainly am not, but for anyone interested in gaining an understanding of this most critical development in American politics.

Dr. Joseph D. Schulman is an American pioneer in the fields of human reproduction and genetics. He had the unique privilege of working with Drs. This book is a real treasure! Dr. Schulman's intimate relationship with Dr. Edwards and his personal participation in the eventual success of human in vitro fertilization make this a unique description of the dedication of a top scientist. Dr. Schulman has related some of the sacrifices, humility and politics of Dr. Edwards struggle and, as such, is an insight into the competition and battle to offer a major medical breakthrough for widespread clinical usefulness. It also resulted in the entirely new subspecialty of human in vitro fertilization. In addition to millions of successful births in infertile couples, it has contributed to sucessful treatment of several other serious genetic birth problems. Dr. Schulman has also described the politics surrounding the undeserved delay in Nobel Prize recognition of Dr. Edward's valuable research. It is definitely a story worth reading!

I'm glad I came across this well written book. It gives a concise firsthand account of a fascinating chapter of medical history. It is a profile in courage in the advancement of science and medicine. The author offers the perspective of an eyewitness who observed these historic events unfolding. It left me wanting to hear much more of the story, and wishing this book was five times longer. I have shared this book with friends who are interested in medicine and history, and they have enjoyed it too.

Richard K. Morgan’s mind truly is a dark place, and Altered Carbon is an impressive work of dystopian sci-fi. If you watched the mini-series, read the novel. I liked both, but there are major differences between the novel and mini-series that make each worth your time.

Not for the fainthearted. Seriously.When someone asks me for a book recommendation, I do not recommend this book or series if the person is underage, or if the person likes fairies and fluffy dragons, or if the person has never read at least some of the Classic Science Fictions works.When someone asks me for a book recommendation, and I think that person is smart enough and tough enough to read hardcore blindingly brilliant Science Fiction, I will recommend this book and series with the caveat: "You will either get totally sucked in and miss days of your life, OR you will run screaming.Your mileage may vary.

Wow, I was not expecting the book to be this good when I bought it. I typically have lower standards for books on Kindle Daily Deals due to the some of the offerings I see and the lower prices, but this book was amazing sci-fi/noir mystery. The writing was great and the whole story flowed very well to an exciting conclusion. This is a pretty long book in a very good way, I couldn't believe how much the author managed to fit in. The sci-fi concepts behind the book were also very interesting, had never read about concepts like this before. Definitely seems like a very realistic dystopian future in some ways and really makes you appreciate something as simple as human mortality.Background: I typically buy my Kindle books as part of the Kindle Daily Deals and plan them for airplane reading or times when I am away from home and cannot do more exciting or responsible tasks. This means that my standards are not too high and I am looking for books in the beach read category under the fantasy/sci-fi genres. I try to rate fairly on the star scale and personally consider anything 3 stars and up to be fine.

I made the mistake to watch the first series of Netflix's show based on this book before I read it. Also, I deliberately waited for a month or so after I finished the show because I didn't want that experience to interfere with the reading experience. I had done both things wrong. First of all, it's a great show, but that's not what I'm reviewing here. The book is so much better (as always). And because there were really big changes made when it was turned into the show, there is no reason not to enjoy both versions.I thought that the world building is really exceptional here. The whole system and the workings of society are very well thought out. The writing and also the twists and turns in the story elevate this book among the great classics, at least for me. It instantly became one of my all-time-favorites.So I'm planning to read the rest of the series for sure.I recommend this to sci-fi fans and detective story enthusiasts alike. Also, I recommend this to everyone :D

I half read & half listened to this novel because of time constraints (and the excellent deal kindle offered for the Audible content via whispernet). It's an excellently crafted piece of fiction that, while staying within the noir cyberpunk style of the first two novels, answers many lingering questions about Takeshi Kovacs and the mythology of his universe. The writing is superb and the story is top notch.However, I'd suggest that you read this novel and not listen to it via Audible. First of all, it's a different actor reading & a different director than used for the first two novels, which is in itself a little bit disconcerting. You can get past it, if it's done right, but they didn't do a good job.The actor, director and production team clearly never read the first two novels on the series and no one bothered to do some cursory research on simple things like name & location pronunciations. For instance, the actor pronounced the title character's name wrong (Takashi Kovacs' last name is pronounced "kovatch" which is pointed out by the protagonist in the first chapters of Altered Carbon and throughout the first two novels) and so the actor and production team never bothered to do a shred of research on the characters of the series. Secondly, they used a very annoying device to indicate flashbacks & memories. Instead of articulating a reference to a memory or flashback, they employed a ridiculous type of echoing sound. That is, all memories and flashbacks (and there are many throughout the novel) are recorded as if muffled. Or to try and describe a real world example, these parts of the story sounded like when your local newscast anchor loses his mic and you hear him in echo off of background audio, video as if from a distance & in a chamber. It's horrible and really annoying. Read this one & skip the Audible.

This is the opening volume of one of my favorite trilogies in all of Science Fiction - if by some chance you haven't read this, get it!Of course, that is only if you want an amazingly well-constructed SF work done as futuristic detective "noir" - it's got the plot, the thoughtful working out of how the particular tech referenced by the title affects society, a tough and resourceful protagonist, good/bad male/female cops/perps/vics - you name it.Finally, it passes a crucial test for me - it holds up quite well over multiple re-reads. Along with the other two books in the "Takeshi Kovacs" series ("Broken Angels" and "Woken Furies"), the author has carved out a universe that is great fun to experience - time and again.
