This heavily illustrated volume chronicles the history of jazz and blues from their roots to the present day. In the introduction, jazz author and journalist Mandel explains that the book's intention is not to provide an exhaustive history; rather, he and the authors, drawn primarily from music journalism, hope that the selected eras and performers represent the breadth of styles and stories that make up jazz and blues. There is coverage of hundreds of musicians, ranging from blues guitarist Daddy Stovepipe, born in 1867, to jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman, born in 1966.Aside from the opening chapter, which discusses the "early years," from the late 1890s through the 1910s, and the final one, focusing on contemporary musicians from the 1990s through today, the book is arranged chronologically into chapters representing one decade each. Each chapter begins with a one-page overview of culture and music during that decade and then treats jazz and blues histories separately. The authors include a detailed look at prominent musical styles and important events, several pages featuring the top four or five artists of the decade, and brief entries on other important musicians. Tooting my own horn, but not really -- I edited this book, but what's good about it comes from its staff of writers and the superb photo research. This book can be poured over by people of all ages for discovery about great American culture and personages. Probably less interesting to experts in jazz and blues than to newcomers or people with some knowledge, eager to learn more.

The innovative user-friendly touch of the Internet links is integrated into the sections of many of the artists (i. e., not put in an appendix or resources section at the back of the main text) by graphics with a web address. Another reader-friendly touch is a graphic noting the most representative recording by a particular musician. This is especially helpful considering the long careers, many recordings, and evolving styles of many of them. Most of the photographs show the artists in performance. Blues and Jazz are taken decade by decade from the early years through the nineteen twenties down to the eighties and the contemporary era, with a closing section on the instruments and equipment going with the two long-lasting and changeable types of music. Profiles of each artist cover biographical background, music career, and the artist's influences on or contributions to the field. For historical overview, comprehensive treatment of all the leading jazz and blues performers, and primary references cited, the "Illustrated Encyclopedia..." is an ideal introduction to these interrelated fields of music.

This well-illustrated book makes for an intriguing reference on some of the greatest American artists of the 20th century. Lots and lots of books and studies fail to join jazz and blues at all, and none do as clearly or as effortlessly as this much-needed and very worthwhile volume. It is both comprehensive and sensible.It covers a lot of ground. Though I wish it had more information on specific solos, which is where we really get a grasp of the depth of artistry here, this is the best book of its kind I have seen and I am grateful for it.

Preface Visualization is a great field to work in these days. Advances in computer hardware and software have brought this technology into the reach of nearly every computer system. Even the ubiquitous personal computer now offers specialized 3D graphics hardware. And with the release of Windows95 and OpenGL, there is an API for 3D graphics as well. We view visualization and visual computing as nothing less than a new form of communication. All of us have long known the power of images to convey information, ideas, and feelings. Recent trends have brought us 2D images and graphics as evidenced by the variety of graphical user interfaces and business plotting software. But 3D images have been used sparingly, and often by specialists using specialized systems. Now this is changing. We believe we are entering a new era where 3D images, visualizations, and animations will begin to extend, and in some cases, replace the current communication paradigm based on words, mathematical symbols, and 2D images. Our hope is that along the way the human imagination will be freed like never before. This text and companion software offers one view of visualization. The field is broad, including elements of computer graphics, imaging, computer science, computational geometry, numerical analysis, statistical methods, data analysis, and studies in human perception. We certainly do not pretend to cover the field in its entirety. However, we feel that this text does offer you a great opportunity to learn about the fundamentals of visualization. Not only can you learn from the written word and companion images, but the included software will allow you to practice visualization. You can start by using the sample data we have provided here, and then move on to your own data and applications. We believe that you will soon appreciate visualization as much as we do. In this, the second edition of Visualization Toolkit and vtk version 2.0, we have added several new features since the first edition. Besides several new filters such as clipping, smoothing, 2D/3D Delaunay triangulation, and a new decimation algorithm, we have added several readers and writers, and better support net-based tools such as Java and VRML. Finally, our PC support has greatly improved, including a nice tool for managing the compile process. The additions of these features necessitated the addition of three special contributors to the text: Lisa Sobierajski Avila, Rick Avila, and C. Charles Law. Rick and Lisa worked hard to create an object-oriented design for volume rendering, and to insure that the design and software is fully compatible with the surface-based rendering system. Charles is the principle architect and implementor for the imaging pipeline. We are proud of the streaming and caching capability of the architecture: It allows us to handle large data sets despite limited memory resources. Especially satisfying has been the response from users of the text and software. Not only have we received a warm welcome from these wonderful people, but many of them have contributed code, bug fixes, data, and ideas that greatly improved the system. In fact, it would be best to categorize these people as co-developers rather than users of the system. I started to use the companion free software "visualization toolkit" back to the first edition of this book. My goal was to write a Windows application called "3D Groundwater Explorer" for the 3D Visualizaiton of data and results from groundwater flow and contaminant transport simulations. It was a tough time, partly because this book focuses on algorithms and does not explain how to use the Toolkit in details (maybe the Toolkit is too "big" to be explained in details). Despite of the rather high learning curve, the Toolkit provides virtually everything that one might need in creating impressive and informative visualization image. The Visualization Toolkit is a real tremendous accomplishment.

This book is poorly titled, because it discusses the algorithms and techniques of visualization much more than the use of the Visualization Toolkit software. However, it is a good introduction to scientific visualization, and the free software included on the CD is an extremely powerful and useful tool. However, if you only wish to learn to use the software, The Visualization Toolkit User's Guide would be much more appropriate for you.

This is clearly one of the worst books I've ever seen. I do admit there's lots of detail in there on visualization techniques etc. However, buying a book named "The Visualization Toolkit" I expect information about exactly this. Instead, what you get with this book is in-depth coverage of how the marching cubes algorithm works for example. Now let me ask you: Does that information help you using the toolkit? Definitely not. Consequently, if you want a practical guide to using VTK, do NOT consider this one.

The book gives you a good overview of the most important modern algorithms in computational geometry and computer graphics. AND: On the CD included you find a professional programming system with implementations of the mentioned algorithms in SourceCode! You can easily extend the system by your own algorithms in C++. Every Researcher who starts to work in this field should read this book and use these implementations.

This book is great for gaining an in-depth understanding of the underlying visualization algorithms used in the Visualization Toolkit.If you would like understand how to use the VTK software, you should purchase The Visualization Toolkit User's Guide. This companion book is updated for each major release of VTK, and contains many detailed examples.

Although latitude is fixed by the earth and Columbus could sail a "straight line" in 1492 relative to a fixed latitudinal parallel, longitude made sailors feel they were on a train and looking at another train, trying to determine which one just began moving.After reading a book about Mason and Dixon and all of the incredibly (for me) complex math and astronomy involved, I was slow to begin this book. Author Dava Sobel, however, cuts through all the more complicated principles like a good pre-calculus teacher. I would even suggest this book could appeal to adventurous 8th graders. The history is impressive. The Harrison family were watchmakers, but as very precise and diligent watchmakers competitive with the Royal Society and haughty astronomers like Nevil Maskelyne. John Harrison had size, cost, material, temperature fluctuations, moisture, waves, and many more atmospheric obstacles to confront while those relying on lunar readings went much further to produce much less. For the record, I had never heard of John Harrison. His predecessors include Halley, Tycho Brahe, and Galileo, whose attempts to time the speed of light is briefly retold here.This is summer reading, a hero's tale, good defeating bad, The Little Engine that Could. If you or your child is interested in sailing, navigation, astronomy, inventions, machining, or how the British came to rule the word for a time, this is a book to read and re-read.

I was left hoping for more detail and depth. This story is sort of a biography about a person whom the author explains there is not much known. The subject's work product is and has been well known and studied at length, but there are not enough details about the technology included in this book. At the end of the book the author explains that she purposefully omitted information that she did not think her readers are smart enough to consider. The premise of using a clock to compute longitude is mentioned repeatedly through the first half of the book, but an explanation of the operating principal and technique is only finally hinted at in the later stages of the book. The idea is that at any instant one can correlate "local" time to some known "reference" time as it occurs at some specific reference location and compute the local angle of longitude in relation to the reference location. The clocks being discussed are the devices used to reliably transport the "reference" time for comparative use in other locales. I have been aware of the technique for a long while and it became a guessing game to anticipate when the idea was finally going to be presented to, and shared with, readers. I think that many readers will enjoy the book much more if the premise is described, in detail, in an earlier portion of the story so that it is more obvious why one may appreciate all the great efforts made in the field of horology to achieve a series of incremental advances in performance and reliability. This book reads like a book report or a term paper rather than as a comprehensive book. It seems as if the author knows her subject well, but did not benefit from effective editing and/or insightful guidance regarding the perspective of a reader when formatting the story line into book form. I am surprised that some other more satisfying explanation of the history and circumstances has not been offered as a replacement for this book and its best seller status.

This book is a fascinating history of the development of a mechanical chronometer. The author lays out the historical background and competing interests so that the reader can fully appreciate the challenges faced by John Harrison and his son William. It shows that John Harrison was like the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan (central character in the movie "The man who knew infinity") in that he was poor and therefore self educated. His vocation was carpentry and his intimate knowledge of wood was employed in his first chronometer. He knew how to build sound grandfather clocks and that experience fed into his first chronometer for seafaring. He almost let his £20,000 prize slip away, because he wasn't satisfied with his first clock designed for the sea. Had he resisted the urge to build a better clock before claiming the prize, he would have won the prize out right. Instead, he ended up competing head-on with a lunar distance technique created by people favored by the committee that oversaw the giving of the prize money. The books paints the complex story of Harrison's Great achievements and does so in an easy to read format.

This is a very historically informative and interesting read. I feel like I am getting more history lessons here than in high school. And I loved history so this is just great to me. Thank you so much.

Very detailed guide to old jewelry through the Victorian era to the modern. Divided into time periods going into the history, fashions, & trends with jewelry. Many pictures & prices. Lovely to look at & with a lot of information. Good for both dealers & collectors alike.

I think this book is a good primer, but I expected it to be organized somewhat differently. I thought it would start from the basics about gems, i.e. their possible colors and cuts, the methods employed for making jewelry, and then start to discuss the types of things that were popular in different periods. I pretty much just launches into the stuff and the background stuff seems to be included as an afterthought.

An interesting guidebook to the Cairo Egyptian Museum. Zahi Hawass makes his choice of his favourite pieces from the museum. He starts with the replica of the Rosetta Stone and that the British Museum will not return it due to the security arrangements at Cairo Museum. Enough said. I could never understand why they have such a poor copy. The replica copy on the ground floor, which you are encouraged to touch, at the British Museum is much better. The photographs are excellent and Zahi's comments show his love of Ancient Egypt. For a more indepth guide "A walk through the Alleys of Ancient Egypt" by Abeer el-Shahawy is to be recommended

I felt lost. I'm sure the museum is immense and contains a tremendous amount of artifacts. But I had a difficullt time trying to relate one to another. I'm sure that is difficult even when you are there, considering the tremendous number of centuries of history involved.

I was disappointed with the lack of mummy pictures. The few that were in here were great. They were very detailed and almost startling when you turned the page. This book has pictures of statues and some jewelry in the museum and a caption on each; they were ok, but not as interesting to me as the mummy pictures. I much preferred "The Life of Ancient Egyptians"; it didn't have as many pictures, but was very informative about every day life of Egyptians.

Dr. Hawass is a fascinating and insightful author.

This actually succeeds in making the reader appreciate each piece better than in the Museum itself. Anyone who has visited this crowded, messy and dusty place realizes however that such is not a major achievement.The photographs are all in full colour, set on a black background and quite beautiful. There is, however, a definite lack of coordination with the captions. Often enough, the photo will only show a close-up of a piece but the text will describe the whole. It is awkward for instance to read about a statue's feet when only the head is shown!The lay-out is strangely traditional, with each page being devoted either to text or photos. Though numerical references are provided, this is quite confusing as a caption may refer to a photo as much as 4 pages back or ahead.Those who have visited the Cairo Museum may find this book worthwhile as a souvenir. However, those unfamiliar with Egyptian history and art should look elsewhere for a substantial introduction to the field.

Wow, I really love this author! I have bought 2 more books by her and hunted down some out of print books (Markets and the Illustrated Math Dictionary) to add to my kids' collection! I wish I had found these 2-3 years ago. My kids are ages 5th and 6th grade, and feel a LITTLE old for these books (based solely by Judging the Books by their Covers, of course!), but I read the book and really enjoyed the presentation and the information. It is a lovely start to thinking about the origins of science, and how we USED to think about the world when we didn't have the parameters of science.I think 5th and 6th grade certainly can benefit from the information inside, but the reading level is very approachable for a younger audience. My children would have even enjoyed these in 1st grade. Suitable and approachable for multiple ages and ability levels!

I read most of this book out loud to our son and oldest daughter when they were 11 and 9, respectively. You'd be surprised how often Archimedes and the inventions attributed* to him come up in conversation. We've referred back to this book at least a dozen times. It has definitely fed into my son's passion for science, math and Greco-Roman history.The book was written and published before I was born so sometimes the writing style is dry but it never struck me as dated. In general, the book reads like a fairytale. The lively black and white illustrations certainly elucidate the text. I look forward to reading it to our youngest daughter soon but doubt my kids would read it from cover to cover on their own.*Some archeologists suspect that the hanging gardens of Babylon (well before Archimedes' time) depended on irrigation water raised by a screw credited to Archimedes.

Great read aloud for my students in our classical ed. school. I use it for first grade, and they love for me to keep reading on ad on. Scholastic also sells a STEM hands on kit with a lever and fulcrum and Archimedes screw. The kit goes great with this book.

My 13yo son loved this book! It's written well and he retold so many of the stories back to me. We bought it as a prep book for our trip to Greece and it was the perfect addition to his curriculum!

Of all the books in the series, this was my child's favorite. Great as a read-aloud for a first-grader who likes science and history.

This is a fabulous biography for Archimedes. I have recommended it to many teachers.

My son read this book as a supplement to his 8th grade curriculum. He enjoyed learning about Archimedes and the different science techniques.

Great read for my middle schooler who is interested in both math and history. He said it was fun to read - not dry or boring as he expected it might be - and full of interesting tidbits about math. The only reason we give it 4 stars is that the Kindle edition formatting is off at times (we compared it to a friend's hard copy of the book), making it difficult to read in parts.

I picked up this series on a whim and I’m not disappointed. While the story seems to have similarities to Overlord, the main characters are different in their approaches.Diablo has always been a solo player but now finds himself part of a group of cute girls who all need his Over Powered abilities.The internal monologue is always amusing but he seems to be a great Role Player as he knows just what to say as a Demon Lord from Another World.The girls are okay but a little too dependent on the male protagonist.

Great addition to the series. I would say better than than the first two, the stakes actually start getting real, and there are some darker moments which I liked. As always, the fan service is over the top sometimes, but it's used sparingly, thankfully.

It just gets better and better as you read more volumes. I enjoyed this volume especially since it means the next one is gonna come out which is my favorite. There's more battles in this one than previous volumes which is super rad.

I have purchased all the books prior to this one and each get better. Read both 4 and 5 in one afternoon and now hoping that 6 comes out real soon for now I will just reread all 5 again.

The cover art Made me think there was going to be some gender bending magic at play, but was a pleasant surprise. You can't judge a book by its cover.☺

If you like anime, manga or light novels in general, this one is worth the read. Not as overtly ecchi as the anime version, but still with it's funpoints

Placed an pre-order thinking it was the light novel based on clicking the image and it leading to the light novel, ended up with a manga I didn't want or need because they later changed the listing.

Rose is awesome and Diablo was a badass, enough said.
