About the Author

LeRoy Grannis’s initial foray into surfing began at age 14, but it wasn’t until the age of 42 that he picked up a camera and made a career out of it. Under doctor’s orders to take up a hobby, Grannis built a darkroom in his garage and began shooting surfers at Hermosa Beach, and "Photo: Grannis" quickly became a hallmark of the California surf scene of the 1960s. Grannis is considered one of the most important documentarians of the sport, and was inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame in 1966. He died on February 3, 2011.

I grew up in Hermosa and along the South Bay...Many of the featured pictures were icons when I was growing up. How things have changed since my days at Pier Avenue Elementary School...So it goes!

Leroy Grannis was one of the surfing world's most superb photographers and had been a surfer since the 1930s. He recently died in CA at the age of 93. His images are crisp, clear and colourful. More importantly they evoke nostalgia for an innocent era, a time when surfing was pure fun, less commericalized, and less competitive than today. Even when there were competitions they were more for love of the sport than for big cash purses and TV celebrity appearances. Grannis' work is worth every penny.

Fantastic pictures, can't read German but pictures are worth $10 all day long !!

I didn't realize that the whole book was in German but that does not matter at all, the book is great, rad pictures that really depict the great surf culture of the 1960s.

Some great shots from La Jolla to Hermosa Beach and beyond. Lots of text but plenty of pictures as well. A decent read but much better as a picture flipper. Man those guys and gals were radical!

The photographs are superb and not only capture the rides and the riders, but also the culture that developed around surfing in the 60s and 70s. It's a time capsule that preserves the people and places that were part of my life back then. When I venture back in time as an amateur surfing historian and try to picture those people and places, I can see what LeRoy Grannis saw through his lens. He, along with the other greats of 60s surfing photography - Don James, Ron Church, Ron Stoner, Grant Rohloff, Val Valentine, John Severson, Ron Dahlquist, Tom Keck, Tom Jewell, Pat Darrin, Peter Rae and Dick Gustafson - paved the way for today's amazing photographers. I must say that I was surprised to find the Steve Barilotti's informative and beautifully written essay in English, German and French. But since that allowed more photographs to be included I didn't mind. Even all of the photo captions were in three languages. Tip of the hat to Steve and editor, Jim Heimann. Having to choose which photos went into the book and which to leave out must have been a nightmare. 10 out of 10.

In my opinion, this is a book on Applied Corporate Finance. As those who ever took a Corporate Finance class know, the basic premise on which that discipline is built is Maximization of Shareholder Value. Well, this book is about exactly that. According to Corporate Finance theory, the maximization of shareholder value is achieved by following three principles -the Investment Principle, the Financing Principle, and the Dividends Principle. The Investment and Dividends Principles are what in the book the author calls Uses of Cash (Capital Allocation). The Financing Principle has more to do with what the author refers to as the Sources of Cash (asset divestitures, issues of equity/debt, etc). Questions related to operations efficiency are only covered superficially, but that's fine. From the get go, the author is honest about the focus and scope of the book.The book is unique in the sense that there are not many books on Corporate Finance case studies. This book is exactly that. Each of the CEOs/Companies profiled here is a separate case, dealt with in separate chapters. I like that.It is also a well-written, well-researched book. It is an entertaining read and, on top of everything, it has the endorsement of Warren Buffett. You cannot ask for much more than that. Oh wait! Yeah, the presentation is pretty nice. I like good looking, elegant hardcover books.Now, why am I holding back one star? See below:1- The book is kind of dogmatic about certain rules deemed as universal (e.g., never pay dividends, never issue new shares, etc). If things were so simple, then Corporate Finance would not exist as a discipline.2- The author kind of pounds on Jack Welch as someone who, even though successful, has not accomplished the same level of results that the CEOs included in his book did. Well, guess what, you cannot compare apples to oranges. Jack Welch was the CEO of GE. These other CEOs took over when their companies were very small, and completely unknown. I'm not saying the they do not deserve credit for what they accomplished. All I'm saying is that you cannot expect GE's stock price to grow at the same pace small cap stocks grow. Scale is important. So, when adding Jack Welch into the mix, the relevant question is no longer who grew the stock price the most, but who generated the most profits (in absolute dollar value) for their shareholders. Again, scale is important. It's not the same to be the president of the US than the president of Uruguay.I guess the ultimate goal of the book is not so much to teach Corporate Finance lessons but to help value investors select good CEO's. "Good" in this sense means CEO's who are focused on maximizing shareholder value in the long term. In other words, CEO's whose interests are in line with those of the owners of the company. Now, this might be an outdated approach since good Corporate Governance practices are nowadays widespread, which ensures that the compensation of executives is tied to business results. Not to say that there are still not principal-agent issues around, but it is definitely not as pervasive of a problem as it was decades ago.Hope this helps.Cheers!

I’ve always been obsessed with reading business biographies, especially on those CEO’s that are rarely interviewed on CNBC. Often times these less visible CEO’s have track records far greater than their counterparts. I want to learn how they grew their companies and built shareholder value.The Outsiders is a great book that looks at eight CEO’s who produced above average returns for shareholders over the long term. In most cases these CEO’s were not attention junkies and were not only great capital allocators but also time allocators. Over 29 years Tom Murphy of Capital Cities produced a 19.9% compounded annual return. Over 27 years Henry Singleton of Teledyne produced a 20.4% compounded annual return. Over 17 years Nick Chabraja of General Dynamics produced a 23.3% compounded annual return. Over 46 years (to 2011) Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway produced 20.7% compounded annual returns for shareholders.These CEO’s as well as four others in the book were not your cookie cutter capital allocators and did not fit the mold of most business books you read today. Every one of the CEO’s was a first time CEO (no past history of success) and more than half had very little industry experience before taking over as CEO. I found these two things very interesting especially has it relates to microcap investing. So often I’m trying to find great management in microcap, which can be difficult if there is no prior resume. In all instances the Outsider CEO’s led decentralized organizations empowering others to make decisions and they were great capital allocators.Outsider CEO’s ran high cash flowing businesses, which allowed them to take on debt (few ever issued equity) to make the strategic acquisition or to buy back stock when it was historically cheap. All but one of the eight companies bought back 30%+ of outstanding shares over a period of time. Some took on debt to buy back shares at depressed levels. For those that did use equity to make acquisitions they always knew when to do it (when the stock was expensive).There are many more takeaways from the book, but you’ll just have to read it. I found the book very easy to read and in many cases reinforced management principles I’ve always felt were important. You will enjoy The Outsiders.

zanandjayna's review sums up much about how I feel about this casebook.Other complaints that I had is that the notes/comments sections are quite poor and are usually of little relevance to the case and/or concept you just studied. Also many of the cases have been poorly edited, leaving out key concepts that most prof's expect you to know.All in all, this is a poor casebook. If you use it i recommend a good supplement.Review pertains to 5th edition

Getting dated, but a very cost effective alternative to a new contracts casebook. Got me through my class at a fraction of the cost of the latest edition.

This book is extremely tedious. The authors use extensive language, commentary, and notes which further confuse and do not explain the already-difficult concepts presented in the cases.Not for pleasure reading. This book is used in Contracts Law classes; if your professor is not one who likes explaining things to any great extent I highly suggest purchasing a supplement or two to help you understand on your own.

In comparison to the other casebooks I've been forced to read this year as a 1L, this casebook is probably the best written. Instead of just placing emphasis on the cases and the rules to glean from them, it also highlights key principles and strategies to use as a lawyer in the future(termed lawyering by the authors). I must admit that taking Nathan Crystal's contract class obviously helps in the understanding of the book, but it's a good regardless.

This seller is great, the book is in great condition and I paid half of what everyone else paid, not to mention the fact that the bookstore sold out and I was one of the only people in my class that had a book. Great seller, great conditioned book, fast shipping. Thanks!!!

Frommer's is ALWAYS my choice for travel information, especially when going out of the USA. This edition seemed to be a more condensed version than others, but I'm sure it will be perfect when I am in Mexico. I appreciate the quick delivery, too.

There is nothing to do in Zihuatenejo. Do not bother getting this book. of the 6 restaraunts worth visiting your hotel if decent will know them all. I am a big frommers fan but if your going to zihua, then jsut go and chill and relax. cuz there is nothing else to do.

I plan to bring this book along with us on our upcoming trip to Mexico. It is a quick read, and will be easy to flip to the section I need when out and about. I like it's portability and straight-forward reviews, however I have read similar desciptions in other books on the market covering this part of Mexico. So, based on some lack of originality, I've given it 4 stars instead of 5.

I bought this book for our trip to Ixtapa, and I would describe it as a 'waste of paper'. There are only about 25 pages devoted to Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, and the rest is Acupulco and very generic Mexico information.I was so disappointed that I ordered a different book, Moon's 'Acupulco, Ixtapa and Zihuatanajo'. That book arrived yesterday, and it is SO much better!

Wish there was more info on Ixtapa and Zihuat. Only 23 of the 170 pages covers this area.

the book to get for felting as you can see from the reviews...Also, if you want to take it a step further with color and the balance of color...This book is a great book to understand and enter into the market. I bought the whole series and read them from cover to cover. This is not for the advanced student, but the beginner.I also think that fashion designers should have a thorough understanding of color theory, which is really not taught that much or well. It is also a very complex subject to learn and understand. BUT!!!!! This book was very helpful, Completely new to felting I need a lot of guidance. This had me making felt necklaces very quickly. I moved through the project's easily with the excellent guidance of the author. The beginning projects were perfect for learning yet very useful for projects later on. Definitely one I will be keeping on my book shelf and referring to as I progress in the medium. Basic through tricky, nuno even, pretty and easily personalizable projects to do. New too felting? This book is full of wonderful descriptions and lots of photo eye candy. I am a mixed media artist, bookshelf space is a premium lol!! This stays for certain. Worth the space.Mahalo

I am not very impressed, as a lot of projects described are done using ready-made pre-felt material. Blanket or tablecloth are done using pre-felt as a basis, also color blocks are done from pre-felt and so on. This is not what I expected as a new adept of wet felting. Of course, projects are weird, but you can use the description only as how-to-make.There are pluses: introduction of different designers (which you can find and study to get inspiration) but not my favorite ones :( and list of techniques, mostly wet felting. Needle felting is described only a little and in a very poor manner... though it is a separate and wonderful world.

This book gives a lot of the "Whys" that I have been missing in my journey as a Fiber Artist. I have been learning to felt on my own, and making it up as I went along. This book filled in so much for me. I now understand the art of felt making so much better and I feel that I am a better artist because of having read the book and now I am in the process of completing all of the exercises.This book is on my list of "Must Reads" for anyone looking to learn to felt.

I have been ourchasing a number of books on felting to self train. This was excellent, unless needle felting is your primary interest. Little on that topic. I found the quality of the instructions and the projects very high. These are primarily textile accessories not craft. Several hats, even basic instructions for clothing (and a warning that clothes are for experts due to high rates of shrinkage).

I am very new to felting and have been looking for a great in-depth book about the history and "science" of felting as well as examining different techniques and projects that would benefit a beginner who wants to learn or an advanced felter who wants to learn more. I think I've found it in this book.Christine begins by talking about the history and traditions of felt making throughout the world, which I found fascinating, and discusses why some fibers felt... plant fibers alone, do not. Who new? ;)The thing that initially sold me on this book (BTW, Thank you Amazon for your "Look Inside This Book feature) was the fact that she covers more techniques than most other books I looked at, like cobweb felting and nuno felting (which I have become hooked on). I admit I haven't finished reading the book as I couldn't wait to get started, but I constantly flip through and refer back to certain sections as I work. She gives wonderful tips and advice for people of all levels, like best ways to stand to reduce back pain when rolling out wet felt.Bonus... as I came to discover, Christine has a shop, New England Felting Supply, here in Massachusestts, (about and hour and a half from my town) in Easthampton (western, Ma). If you are able to make the trip if ever in the area I highly recommend it... blew my mind away. In the front is a gallery with the most beautiful felt pieces, many of which are photographed in the book. In the back is the supply area, with roving of all colors, mats, needle felt supplies, books, kits... I could go on. The people who work there are wonderful... friendly and very helpful. I have only been once, but looking forward to going back. Oh, and they have a web site.. of course.Bottom line... if your looking for a more extensive book with great info as well as projects to carry you through many levels of felting experience... I believe this could be the one.

This book is beautifully illustrated on substantial paper stock. The graphics are very well done. The book covers practicalities like proper posture while felt-making and watching out for creepy-crawlies in your wool. The techniques range from simple cord making to creating yardage for upholstery projects to making your own fedora. Up until now, the only felting I've done was the accidental machine washing of a wool scarf. I'm really looking forward to trying these techniques.One caveat - if you are looking for a good reference for the popular craft of needle felting, you won't find very much here. There are only 3 pages skimming the topic. You might consider Indygo Junction's Needle Felting: 22 Stylish Projects for Home & Fashion for a better text on needle felting.

I typically buy all of Kristen Proby’s books, and the review sounded interesting. However, this book had no conflict. There was no angst, no drama, and barely any conflict between the characters. As soon as they decided to date (three years after knowing each other, but at the beginning of the book), they were together the rest of the story, with only one disagreement between them.Hannah’s anxiety issue became an annoyance. I have friends that suffer from anxiety, sometimes debilitatingly so. However, she loved to say “you’re not a doctor, I am” when her friends would tell her she wasn’t dying in the midst of an attack, or what she thought was happening wasn’t. It wasn’t endearing and felt a little arrogant to me. I also wasn’t in love with how she didn’t like kids (or says she didn’t) when she delivers babies for a living. Brad makes a comment that delivering stillborns must be hard and she says “it happens”, coming across, to me, very cavalier. She also seem to come out guns blazing with Brad’s mom, upon their initial meeting. It seemed unnecessary and over the top. In sum, I didn’t like Hannah.Brad was great; a wonderful person, sweet boyfriend, etc. But the writing was an issue for me. For example, their first date moved quickly. They order their meals, share what would amount to two minutes of dialogue, and then the food is there. I don’t mean to nitpick, but the writing didn’t flow like it normally does in a Proby novel.Lastly, my biggest issue was the lack of a climax in the book. Hannah’s anxiety issue wasn’t it; Brad never doubted her, stopped loving her, etc. I just read an average love story about two otherwise regular people. Nothing special here, folks.

It felt so good to be back in Montana with Kristen Proby’s characters. I absolutely love this author and her writing. Her stories are fun, entertaining, sexy and not filled with a lot of drama, but just enough to keep things interesting.If you loved Kristen Proby’s Love Under the Big Sky Series, then you will want to read her newest series….Big Sky Series.Charming Hannah is the first of this series and I think she is off to a terrific start. I loved this story and the characters. I also loved that we got to see some of the previous characters from LUtheBS Series. You don’t have to read the other series to enjoy this book, but one you read this one you will want to go back and read her other series. I will warn you that this book takes on an insta love feel but It works in this story because Brad and Hannah have actually known each other for three years. So even thought their relationship seems to progress quickly it really doesn’t. I thought the flow and pace of the story worked and was well written. This story also touches on a serious subject….Anxiety, and how someone who lives with it can be affected by it. It truly can be debilitating at times. Hannah’s story felt real to me and I thought it was portrayed accurately.In this story we follow Hannah and Brad. Hannah is a local doctor who has only lived in Cunningham Falls for 5 years, after her best friend told her about the position opening. Hannah is married to her job and likes it that way. That is until Brad comes along and worms his way into her life. Brad is the local Chief of Police and has live in Cunningham Falls all his life. Also married to his job, but is enthralled with Hannah. I loved these two characters together. I thought they complimented each other well. And their chemistry was off the charts.I also loved the secondary characters we get to meet and know in this story. I look forward to the other books to come in this series.I would recommend this book to anyone who is a Kristen Proby fan. Also if you are a fan of romantic and heartfelt love stories with a totally swoony Hero, this is one you will want to read!!!! You’ll be left with a HUGE smile on your face :)

Charming Hannah is the first in a spin off series from the "Love Under The Big Sky" series. Characters from other books are mentioned, but you don't need to know their stories to understand Charming Hannah. Me being the OCD book reader I am, I have read the previous 4 and have loved them all. Charming Hannah was no exception. ******REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS***Hannah is an OB/Gyn in the small town of Cunningham Falls, Montana, where everybody pretty much knows everybody. She is way too busy to have a social life, or so she thinks. She finally makes time for the local police chief Brad (AKA Chief Sexypants). Brad's schedule is just as erratic, but somehow it works. Brad and Hannah find that their attraction is off the charts and they just can't stay away from each other.The story itself is an easy read. Not a lot of romantic angst. My feeling of this whole series is that it is comfort food for the soul. Easy to sink into and just enjoy. One thing this story addresses that I have never come across in a book is severe anxiety disorder. Both of my daughters suffer from different degree of anxiety and neither like to talk about it. Reading about it from the sufferers point of view was a bit eye opening for me. I feel I understand it a little better. For that, I am grateful.To end, I would definitely recommend Charming Hannah. It definitely warms you from the inside out.

In all honesty, this book didn’t quite do it for me. Normally I absolutely love Kristens books, but this book had too much focus on Hannah’s anxiety. For some reason it irked me the wrong way, the way the focus was on her. Brad was absolutely lovely, but it seemed like she didn’t appreciate it enough.But as always though, I love the way Kristen writes a story. I get sucked in and won’t put it down until the very end.This is only a 3 star read for me.
