With roots in WWII, and drawing heavily on other country’s counterterrorist organization (especially Britain’s Special Air Service), Naylor gives the general public as close to a full picture it has yet to receive on the Joint Special Operation Command (JSOC). Created after the failed Iranian hostage rescue attempt in Iran, JSOC went through a lot of growing pains. But after 9/11, and especially when GEN Stanley McChrystal took command, JSOC began to flourish. JSOC was highly effective and proficient targeting the terrorist and insurgent networks in Iraq and Afghanistan. And of course hit a figurative grand slam with the takedown of Osama Bin Laden.The controversy comes when Naylor begins to name names. There are legitimate reasons the names of specific people and specific operations should be left out of the public view. Naylor could have told his fascinating story of some of what has been going on in shadows in the name of America without using so many current active duty and still living retired military members.However, if the reader can set aside skittishness about the use of names they will find an absolutely fascinating story of one of the most effective US military units in recent history. I highly recommend this book.

I bought this book on the advice of a former SOCOM member. I enjoyed it only because it seemed to provide a fairly comprehensive history of SpecOps since Vietnam. It would have been good to have a organization graphic somewhere within. It was, for me, rather difficult to follow the metamorphosis of the various baseline organizations over the years. It would have been nice to have the author's assessment on why a particular organization is (was) successful - or not - and by what measure. I would really need to read other books in the vein in order to give a better review. I read it; I liked it; I would recommend it.

Excellent, though you need to know it's more of a history book than one might expect after all the memoirs from servicemen (and women) coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq (having read more than a few of those, it seems he knows his stuff very well). If you look at the 1 star reviews, most of them found it dry and boring. I didn't, but I like history books.Mostly, there is a ton of info of why JSOC came into being after the 1990 Iran rescue failure, its hunt for Balkan war criminals and the ups and downs up to 2001 and gradual expansion ever since.There is a lot about the organization chart of how was leading the JSOC, tons of names. Sometimes you get confused as new officers are mentioned for the first time. Or, and that is frequent, a unit's codename changes. Lots about the equipment they would use and the gradual evolution of their doctrine, especially to go after Zarqawi in Iraq in '06 (they're the ones who called in the airstrike). No, you don't see much sympathy for Zarqawi and the other butchers, but there is grudging recognition that they were pretty good at being evil terrorists, else they'd soon be dead.For the weapon/gear geeks among us, there is plenty of red meat to chew on. From how they weaponized super small helicopters to spy trade craft to embed recon elements as civilians, to landing and insertion tactics.And there are plenty of tactical combat descriptions, if that's what you're after. From the mission to kill Bin Laden to the tragic misfortune where SEAL 6's borrowed Chinook gets shot down a few weeks later.Although the author clearly admires the very smart and dedicated people in JSOC, he does not, on occasion, spare them from criticism. Up to Abu Ghraib, some of the JSOC interrogations might have been, let's say, a bit unpleasant. And he makes it clear that it probably did happen and that it probably wasn't just "a few guys, off the books". Ditto when he mentions in passing how little influence the Special Forces - whose mission runs more into nation-building and bringing the locals on board, have on JSOC. The top brass's doctrine is all sticks, no carrots.(speaking of what carrots can achieve: Hammerhead Six: How Green Berets Waged an Unconventional War Against the Taliban to Win in Afghanistan's Deadly Pech Valley)His conclusion, which takes place around the time ISIS gets started, is that there are limits to the JSOC model. They can kill, but they are not meant to hold ground. Which is specifically something he mentions in regards to ISIS's quick 2014 capture of all the Iraqi cities JSOC fought so hard to clear insurgents from. He also states, without going into much detail, how the Taliban were for some reason way more resilient in taking JSOC's punches than Al-Quaeda in Iraq. They were getting ground down, but they weren't going away and the troops were frustrated at the lack of lasting effect.He ends with a bit of frustration that successive administrations are using those troops to solve all problems - whether or not they're a good fit. To paraphrase:"JSOC is an awesome hammer. So Presidents now see every problem as a nail".

His book on Anaconda is one of my all time favs and this one did not disappoint. This guy is one of the best military observers of our time. I am 20+ years active duty. I've read a lot. Naylor is outstanding.

Just starting book and can see that the author is not going to embarrass any of the "Top Brass" by explaining important facts that other's have written about. Richard Marcinko warned the CIA station chief & the CO of the marines in Beirut prior to the horrible explosions and loss of life and ignored; never mind his "Red Team" exposing our military bases serious security issues. The Admirals wanted his head on a stake after they were mightily embarrassed.Mogadishu... no mention of Clinton's & Les Aspin's refusing "Heavy Armored vehicles" and & C-130's (Spookies) because they felt it was too much of a "show of strength" (Delta and Rangers RIP for still entering the Devil's Den)I'm betting that "Able Danger" won't even be mentioned do to "Posse Comitatus" fears...Plain Vanilla reporting."Killer Elite", "Triple Cross", "Kill Bin Laden" and any Marcinko book for the "real Story"

Great history about details about how things got to where they are now. The book just stops with a "good luck to the new guy" statement. What happened to McCraven and others who made questionable decisions? What are the author's thoughts about the future of special ops? This book needed another chapter to tie the whole thing together. A few nuggets about the stealth-hawk chopper highlighted a somewhat boring tome. Good for a one-time read.

The book shows in-depth observation to the development of Israel , from not only the technological development prospective, but more importantly , from a historical evolution prospective. the narrative from the writers are interesting yet breath-taking. I in particular like the style - writer shows the opinions from different key personnels from the interviews. this tells how experienced the writer is and showcase his extensive social network, both of these add credibility to the book.From the book, I learned a lot about the Israelis histories (that i didn't know before the read, or, not in such structural form) and more importantly , the subtle cultures in the everyday Israelis lives . and it's the culture + history that makes the Israel now. it's very much like the evolution of Silicon Valley - the culture and history.i highly recommend this book to those who are interested in knowing Israel more , culturally and evolution past.the minor side the book is, it doesn't cover much of how the region belief in the Israelis lives. as belief lives in their blood. it will be great to have this piece of information more widely covered.

My only criticism is that the brief mention of Haredim leaves the impression that Haredi men, an astounding percentage of whom (73%) do not work, would want to work if they had the opportunity. That Israeli society has unfairly excluded them. This is a mistaken impression. Since the Haredi life is all-encompassing and Torah study a full time occupation, secular work for men is considered a last resort. (Women do work, even those with many children, and they are valiant and overburdened.) Haredi families need economic support, preferably life long, partly from the Israeli government and to some degree from religious Jews in America. The productive segment of Israeli society is bearing the economic weight of supporting large religious families whose fathers could earn, but choose not to. How long will the most marketable, most entreprenurial Israelis continue to support poor-by-choice Haredim? Israel is suffering a severe brain drain. All around me I see educated, vibrant, secular young Israelis working and living in New York City. They have a choice where to live. A severe economic problem for Israel.

It is beyond a praise for Judaism.There is a comparison between Israel, Korea, Singapore, Finland, Arab countries.There are statistical facts showing the status of Israel in terms of economic and cultural aspects.I am surprised to see the similarity of infrastructure and chosen moves to form an ecomomic development for a new established countries such as Turkey and Israel. It seems Israel has understood Mustafa Kemal Ataturk better than us.I admit Israel has performed better than Turkey in terms of developing a brand new nation.

This book was just what I needed to get a better understanding of all the millions of little things that happen simultaneously when I run...such complicated orchestration of the human body! As I was reading, I identified with quite a few of the aches and pains, the healthy food intake, bone strength increase, etc., since I'd been running for just about five months; the author pointed to the enthusiasm and the common mistakes of beginning runners as well as the mistakes of veteran runners. Some reviews pointed to the lack of citations within the text, but the author quite often refers to organizations, authorities, and studies by name. If I wanted to double-check, all I have to do is Google them to get some corroborating information. It's funny, but my son-in-law told me "Listen to your body," all along, but that alone sounded nebulous to me. I'm the kind of person who responds better to the "why" of suggestions. This books explains WHY I should listen to my body, in detail. If I had read this before I started running, I would not have sprained my ankle, and it would not have taken twice as long to heal, because I would not have run on the pain when I first felt it...I would have recognized it as something I should ALLOW to heal itself, instead of trying to push through it and run anyway. Oh, well...I learned the hard way. But having read this book, I won't make more running mistakes in the future!

A fantastic resource for the science-oriented runner. Lies strongly toward the left on the spectrum between peer-reviewed journal and popular press. No bibliography and no citations are a definite weakness. The material is presented in a logical fashion and is readable for someone who isn't accustomed to the peer-reviewed journal format (most people). Challenges many of our cherished beliefs regarding proper training, nutrition, recovery, etc. If you're looking for a day- by-day training guide this isn't it, but if you want to know what the current research shows about training principals, this is for you.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I got out of this book. Don't think that just because it's published by Runner's World that it would be a rehash of magazine-style articles. Instead, this book goes into depth on the most up-to-date thinking for just about every topic that can affect a runner's health. The writers have manned the medical tents at major ultrarunning events, so they've seen the extreme side of the spectrum. Unlike other reviewers, I didn't find the lack of citations to be a detriment at all. I thought the writers presented research thoroughly, provided their own analyses and ultimately let the reader draw their own conclusions. It doesn't dumb down the subject nor is it ever boring.

I don't run great distances or at any great speed. I basically run to keep fit and feel happy if I can manage to run 3 times a week. I love running but am not obsessed about PB's or any specific nutritional plans etc. I do like to understand what happens to my body when I run, though.The authors are all runners as well as sports scientists of one sort or another.This is a very good book for anyone who wants to gain an insight into the the science of running. The authors discuss adaptation and issues like VO2 max in a way that is easily understandable. The physiology associated with running is also discussed in an interesting way.The last chapter looks at ageing and running. However, this last chapter ends rather abruptly. I was surprised that this was the end of the book.Definitely buy this book if you run and want to know more about the science of running.I would recommend this to anyone who runs and who wants to understand the mechanisms of running.

Are you a runner who wants to be enlightened? Then pick up this book, which challenges conventional wisdom in many areas including training, diet, fatigue, and injuries. I have been running for three years and trying to move up a level. This has helped me understand many things about my body and its adaptation to running. I've already seen my times improve. One point I will make is that the information may be overwhelming to a beginning runner or a non-runner who is considering the sport; however, for anyone who has been running seriously even for a few years, you will learn a lot and should be able to make some adjustments right away. The only people who may not be too keen on it are the makers of nutritional supplements and some sports drinks, whose effectiveness the book debunks. Another point is that I read this book on the Kindle, and some of the charts don't reproduce as well on its screen. I suspect that the paper version would alleviate that problem.

Review: It is easy to admire Freya Hoffmeister. It is much more difficult to like her, or relate to her as a human being. Freya puts on a cloak of superhuman invincibility that is hard for mere mortals to penetrate. She is a super athlete, which by itself sets her apart from most of us.As a child, she excelled as a gymnast. As a young woman she won beauty contests and competed as a bodybuilder. Then she became an accomplished skydiver until she had a child. She gave up the danger of jumping out of airplanes for the more sedate sport of sea kayaking. But not content to simply paddle with the rest of us, Freya became a rolling expert, and in just three years was teaching, winning titles and giving demonstrations alongside the legendary Dubside.Speaking as a uncoordinated, somewhat clumsy guy, I find this easy to admire but hard to relate to. By itself, Freya's seemingly endless physical talent and the ease with which she conquers any sport she takes up could still make her a sympathetic figure if she showed any sense of struggle or fear in addressing the things she achieved. But she does not. Freya never acknowledges fear or struggle or heart ache. Again, admirable but hard to relate to.Not content with becoming a master of sea kayaking's most abstract skills, Freya's restless spirit cast about for new challenges to master. She settled on long distance sea kayaking trips, challenging herself to complete them faster than anyone had done them before. Her list of accomplishments in this area led her to the subject of this book, the solo, unsupported circumnavigation of Australia. It had only been done once before and that trip was supported. It almost killed the legendary Paul Caffyn in the attempt. Everyone told Freya she was crazy, that she would die in her attempt. But with her usual high level of self-confidence, she forged ahead. Among other things, Freya is a master of planning and detail. And this, combined with luck, her athletic ability and incredible self-confidence seems to have won that day.Joe Glickman seems to have had many of these same feelings as he wrote this story, drawing details from Freya's journals, web posting, conversations and interviews. It is clear he admires her as he describes the many difficulties she addressed with little or no indication of distress. It is also clear that he just can't figure her out. He can't get a grip on her humanity. This makes for a quirky book in my opinion. There is this love-hate relationship, written by an admiring skeptic about his subject. In the end, we never really get to know Freya Hoffmeister beyond the single dimension she will show us. Does she miss the child she left behind for a year to make her voyage? When she's caught out alone in terrible storms, is she afraid? When her love relationship breaks up does she hurt? We'll never really know because Freya keeps these things to herself. I see and can relate to the personal and physical struggles of Cheryl Strayed (Wild) and Warren Richey (Without a Paddle) because they shared them with me and because on some level I have experienced similar situations and feelings too. Perhaps Freya isn't ever afraid. Perhaps she has a self-confidence born of experience. Perhaps she believes in her ability to overcome all physical obstacles. And perhaps she is not sentimental about the loss of relationships. Perhaps she is the person she shows us. Perhaps. But I still do not like her much and cannot relate to the life she shows us.

I followed Freya's exploits on her blog throughout her trip. Accordingly, I didn't expect to get much out of this book. I was wrong.Most serious kayakers are familiar with Joe Glickman. He is a familiar face at major surfski races. His articles on kayaking regularly appear in print in several periodicals. In this book, he adds local color and spice to what had already been documented in Freya's blog during her trip. He is quite familiar with some of Freya's major sponsors (he skyped with major sponsor Epic Kayaks' Oscar Chalupski daily throughout the voyage). He met with Freya in (at least) Puerto Rico, Hawaii, & Australia. He interviewed Freya's sister and (now ex-) boyfriend for background information (as well as many other smaller players both in her life and those who appear in the story).This book did not disappoint. After reading this book, readers will tend to:- Fall in love with Freya the amazon goddess &/or- Revel in this extraordinary accomplishment which pushed the boundaries of what we humans are capable of &/or- Appreciate Mr. Glickman for bringing this astonishing tale to the masses

Asked for - and received - this book for Christmas...and had a hard time putting it down. I am a sea kayaker, and had read of Freya Hoffmeister's exploits in various kayaking magazines. They are all impressive achievements, for a man or a woman, but stories of Freya are especially interesting because she makes no effort to conceal her enormous ego, self-confidence, and yes, "Fearless-ness". She's also uncommonly attractive - in a Teutonic goddess sort of way - which adds to her following. This 185 page book focuses on her 332 day, 8,565 mile, solo circumnavigation of Australia. She is the first woman paddler to do this, and only the second person, having broken the record set by the legendary Paul Caffyn 25 years earlier. It is a larger-than-life accomplishment, with many opportunities to die along the way.What I liked best about the book were the passages detailing her actual time on the water, challenges she confronted and how she dealt with them, equipment issues, and the background stuff about previous attempts to paddle around Australia or exploits along the Australasian coasts. Author Glickman relied a lot upon Freya's enroute blog posts, and interviewed most of the characters involved in her successful adventure.Where I found the book tedious were the occasional vignettes about her childhood, parents, or her personal relationships/love-life. These were shallow, almost gossipy, and just didn't add to the story. My guess is that they were supposed to add some insight into Freya's psyche. I personally think that instead of trying to analyse her, you just ought to accept her as one of those rare, larger than life individuals like Shackleton, Hillary, or Alexander, who have been born with uncommon self-confidence and a reduced sense of "limits".The one thing that I wish were included would be a complete "Gear List", including every piece of equipment and her food rations for the trip. Some comments about how the gear performed, or might be improved would also be nice. All-in-all, a very good read about an incredible adventure and a remarkable woman/person.

It does live up to its name "For Dummies" my husband knows nothing about fly fishing and by reading this book he is learning a lot and is anxious to learn more.

We have not fished in 30 years I needed a book like this it's very well done.
